I'm trying to start Windows 2000NT Pro Everything looks fine at first, but then I get a smaller blue screen with this message : STOP: c0000218 {Registry File Failure}
The registry cannot load the hive (file) :
\SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE
or it's log or alternate.
It is corrupt, absent, or not writeable.

I looked at another post that had this same problem but it didn't seem to help.

Do you have the Win2K System disk?
Have you ever created an Emergency Repair Disk?

No - The Emergency Repair disk restores the registry.
Did your computer come with a restore disk? If it didn't, there may be a restore partition on the computer which is accessed through the bios setup screens or by pressing another F key before Windows begins to boot.
Watch the bottom of the screen carefully right after you power the computer on and look for directions on what F key to press.

The setup menu will not give you an Emergency Repair Disk.
What I was hoping you would find there was system restore partition access.
The best thing to do if it doesn't offer that option is to contact the manufacturer of the computer and get a System Restore Disk.
If you do not have any malware get a non-destructive system restore - If you think you might be infected, get a destructive, full restore disk to reload your op system back to the way it was when the computer was new. Some of the disks will give you a choice - contact support at the computer manufacturer.
How old is this computer?
The fastest way to get the computer operational again is to take it to a computer repair shop that can reload the op system for you. Just about any commercial computer repair shop can, and they might even be able to get it running again without loosing your data.
You just don't have the tools necessary at this point - neither the ERD, the Compaq Restore Disk or a Windows 2000 Installation disk.
If you can't find access to a possible restore partition the choice is to get a disk from Compaq specific to your computer, take to a computer technician, or buy a new Windows Full Installation Disk.
Do you know your 25 digit Windows Key number? (look on the back of the computer for a sticker with the number. It should be somewhere on the computer)

HP (Who now ownes Compaq) will ship restore CD Next Day via FedEx for about $20±. I have ordered 5 sets in '05. You just need to forceful when asking for the disks. If they tell you they cannot send the disks ask to speak with the supervisior. Even if you do not need them now (If you figure a solution) you need to get them before MS stops supporting XP Home, which is suppose to be this summer.
Post you model number so we can help you find the link for the disks.

Thanks for all our help when you mean model number do you want me to tell you the number that enthusiast was saying to check which is on the back of the computer. If so that number is 6025DJQ2A670. The computer is a compaq desktop windows 2000 nt. Acklan when you say they will ship a restore cd do you mean the 4 boot disks the comp came with b/c i got those and loaded them up and it did not work. Please let me know if that is what you are talking about. Can you give me more information on which restore cd i should ask for and purchase.

I made a mistake. Windows 2000 longer supported by Microsoft, so they will no longer ship 9x, ME, NT, or 2000 disks. You may find Compaq rrestore disks on eBay, but you will need to have your COA. They rarely ship sestore disks with COA codes.
Sorry for the bad news.

This would be (in my opinion ) your best option, is Windows 2000 Professional.
I don't know what your specification are so I don't know if you computer will run XP Pro. In my opinion XP Home is a poor choice. In todays internet you need the edge Pro will provide over Home.
If your computer is P-III or better and you have 512mb of RAM then go for XP Pro.

Windows 2000, being a Pro product has Microsoft Extended Support until 6/30/2010.
I believe Compaq/Hp will still provide a restore disk for a fee (if that is the system the computer originally came with). It will be a disk made for your particular model and have the correct drivers, etc on it.
An Emergency Repair Disk is something that has to be made on the computer it is going to be used on because it copies the registry of that computer to a floppy and therefore one you buy made for another computer will not work.
Are you sure there were no instructions on the bottom of the screen as to how to enter the Restore partition when you first boot up - before it tries to start windows?
The other choice of course, is to buy a new Win 2k full installation (or XP full install cd if your computer has the qualifications for it). If you search around, you can get one for not all that much money and then you will have a fully licensed operating system that can be transfered to another computer when the time comes. I recommend the Pro version of XP should you decide on this option as it will be supported five more years then the home version will (which is 12/06 for home).
I bought an OEM full install of XP Pro for $114 a few months ago for a computer I was then building (the one I am on right now), and a XP Home version should be able to be found for less, although the Pro version will have five more years of support and worth the difference in price, not even considering the extra features like remote desktop and far better security. Compaq will probably charge somewhere about $40 or so for the "Restore" disk of Win 2K, which will not be transferable to your next computer.
Something to think about.
Windows XP Advisor (will inform you if Win XP will be able to be installed on your computer)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upg...ng/advisor.mspxWindows XP Minimum Requirements:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/eva...on/sysreqs.mspx(although it says the min ram is 128megs the real life requirement is more like 512)

What is the Make and model of your computer? Example: Compaq Prolient WZ123. There is usually a sticker inside a door or access panel on the front of the computer. If not then it will be by the power supply on the back.

They probably will need the serial number of the computer which is on the back of it.
Yes - call them - tell them what the problem is and ask for the restore disk for your computer.
Ask if they can supply one that will give you the capability to do a repair as well as a full install.

Compaq Presario Desktop PCs - How Do I Find My Model Number?
Checking inside the CD storage door
On some Presario desktop PCs, the Model number is located on a sticker inside the front bezel CD holder.
Open the CD storage area by pressing in the bottom of the storage cover. The numbers should be located on a label inside.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/generic...duct&cc=us#N300 Checking the labels on the case
The model number or equivilent may be found on an identification label on the outside of the case. On some models the label may be hidden behind the CD storage door or behind the door the door that covers the CD drives.
When searching HP's Website for your exact model, you can also use the Product number, Prod #, T Code, or System number.
