Im buying a computer (laptop)
Im not going to spend alot because i have a good desktop in the office and i have already got a laptop but its only a celeron d and i want to kill it...but my girlfriend always has it so i never see it to kill it!!


I need it for simple word crunching and music but the main use will be MS publisher for the website...and compressing pictures etc...nothin major like 3D graphics.
Im told a shared 128mb graphics is not a good idea unless ive at least 1028 of ram..

I would price shop the memory. I think you would have a good computer for the price.

Be sure and get those disks. It's rare for any major manufactor to offer full XP disk instead of recover disks. They will be worth they wieght in gold some day.

I would want BOTH disks - the XP disk AND the Restore disk.

As soon as you get the computer call support and demand the disks. Do not allow them to brush you off by saying Microsoft prohibits them giving you a Microsoft System Disk, which is a lie. Keep going up the food chain until you reach a supervisor who is knowledgeable and agrees to your demand. If you wait until it is out of warranty they will charge you and you will have no alternative but to pay.

The restore disk is easier to use but if you have to change the HD or the motherboard you are forced to use the XP disk or re-buy a new one with a new license) or buy the replacement parts from the laptop manufacturer at inflated prices over what you could otherwise buy them for.

You also need the op system disk to add value added features not installed in the standard installation should you wish to do so.

I would guess that Full XP disk is an OEM which would make the registration exclude to the original computer. I believe only the Full Retail Verison is transferrable. I do agree about getting both the restore and Full XP Pro disk, but they only offered one or the other. At least that is what I got out of reading the site configurator.

You are right. It isn't transferable, but installing a new motherboard doesn't make it a new or different computer.

It would probably take a call to Microsoft to reauthenticate, but that should not be any problem.

That is all I buy is OEM. You just have to get tech support from where you purchased it from, or pay extra at MicroSoft.
