Hi All

Hope that you can help me.

My Dad has a P4S8X motherboard installed in his computer, and i beleive that firewire 1394 is available on this motherboard. However, when we try and enable his new camcorder to use firewire it wont do it.

Is there something obvious i am missing, or is there a jumper config on the motherboard that i need to follow.

The 1394 connection was available previously in network connections before he reloaded XP (he thinks).


Any advice would be great.

Is the firewire listed in the Device Manager?

No, we checked, tryed rebooting and it still isnt there.

Did you receive a disk for your motherboard? Check for drivers on the ASUS website.

I have the CD, but not really to sure which option to "run" . None metion anything about 1394 or firewire.

Are you sure it is available on your board?

Is this computer a brand computer (hp, compaq, gateway, dell, etc) or was it custom built? And when you reinstalled XP, did you use the cd that came with the motherboard/computer to reinstall the motherboard drivers?

Yes i am sure. The board has a firewire port on the motherboard

What options does the CD give you to choose from?

SiS Mini IDE Driver
Promise Fastrak 376 Driver
SiS AGP Driver
SiS PCI LAN Driver
USB 2.0 Driver

And there the only options that it gives

Didnt see you previous post.

It was custom built and he isnt to sure if he reinstalled the drivers since reinstalling XP

Sorry I tend to miss small things like that every once in a while.

The only place I could see the driver being is under the USB 2.0 drivers, they might have put the firewire drivers in with the USB ones, since they are somewhat similar.

It also might be 'Promise Fastrak 376 Driver', but im not sure what that is though--ill look it up in a second.

SiS Mini IDE Driver-- this driver is for your hard drive controller (IDE hard drives)

Promise Fastrak 376 Driver -- This is apparantly an advanced version of the 'SiS Mini IDE Driver'

SiS AGP Driver-- this driver is for your AGP port (for videocards)

SiS PCI LAN Driver --this driver is for the ethernet/Lan port on your motherboard (for DSL internet service)

USB 2.0 Driver-- this would be the onboard USB driver -- the only place that i can think of where the firewire drivers would be at

Ok tried going to fasttrack but instead of installing the driver it comes up with the following "read me" text

Installing Driver in Existing Windows XP System

WARNING: If you will be moving the boot drive containing the existing Windows XP operating
system to a mirrored RAID 1 array on the FastTrak 376 , the FastTrak 376 driver MUST be loaded
to the hard drive while it is still attached to your existing hard drive controller.
Do not attach this drive or any other hard drive to the FastTrak 376 controller before completing
this step.

After installing the FastTrak 376 and rebooting your system, Windows XP setup will show a
"New Hardware Found" dialog box. Under Windows XP, the "PCI RAID Controller" will be displayed.

1. Choose "INSTALL FROM A LIST OR SPECIFIC LOCATION" then press "NEXT".
2. Choose "SEARCH FOR THE BEST DRIVER IN THESE LOCATION" and
choose "INCLUDE THIS LOCATION IN THE SEARCH" then
Type "CD-ROM Drive:\Drivers\Promise\WINXP\" in the text box. Press "NEXT".
3. The Windows XP Setup screen will appear again saying
"Setup will load support for the following mass storage devices
-WIN XP Promise FastTrak 376 ™ controller". The FastTrak 376 driver
will now be copied on to the system and entered into the Windows XP driver database.
4. Finally, Windows XP will then restart for the driver installation.

Installing Driver During New Windows XP Installation
1a. Floppy Install: Boot the computer with the Windows XP installation diskettes.
1b. Floppyless Install: Boot from floppy and type "WINXP". After files have been copied,
the system will reboot. On the reboot, press <F6> after the message
"Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration..." appears.
1c. CD-ROM Install: Boot from the CD-ROM. Press <F6> after the message
"Press F6 if you need to install third party SCSI or RAID driver" appears.
2. When the "Windows XP Setup" window is generated, press "S" to Specify an Additional
Device(s)
3. Press "O" to select "Other" and press the "Enter" key.
4. Insert the Promise Technology driver into the CD-ROM Drive: and press "Enter" key.
5. Choose "WINXP Promise FastTrak 376 ™ Controller" from the list that appears on screen,
then press the "Enter" key.
6. The Windows XP Setup screen will appear again saying
"Setup will load support for the following mass storage devices:"
The list will include "WINXP Promise FastTrak 376 ™ controller"..
NOTE: If you need to specify any additional devices to be installed, do so at this time.
Once all devices are specified, continue to step 7.
7. From the Windows XP Setup screen, press the Enter key. Setup will now load all device
files and then continue the Windows XP installation.


Confirming Windows XP Installation
1. From Windows XP, open the Control Panel from "My Computer" followed by the System icon.
2. Choose the "Hardware" tab, then click the "Device Manager" tab.
3. Click the "+" in front of "SCSI & RAID Controllers hardware type."
The driver "WINXP Promise FastTrak 376 ™ Controller" should appear.


But the driver doesnt install

Yes, i found out that what that driver is for is if you are having problems with the 'SiS Mini IDE Driver', (for hard drive/ cdrom controllers) otherwise it doesnt need to be installed.

When i try and install the USB 2 driver, the dialog box states that the latest driver is already installed and it cannot update it.

Go to the website and download the drivers into a folder you create under C:\ Then maunally install the FireWire from the Add\Remove Hardware in the Control Panel. Point to the download .inf files in the folder you DL to. This should work if you can find the drivers.

I dont see a driver for firewire anywhere on Asus's site. It might just install automatically like the mouse/keyboard port or LPT1 (printer) port when XP was reloaded. And the name for it might be hiding in the device manager like sometimes it will list a mouse or keyboard under "human interface devices' instead of 'mouse' or 'keyboard'?

Checked human interfaces and asus website. Nothing found

Any ideas???????????

Have you tried installing it thru Add\Remove Hardware and let Windows detect the drivers?
