Hi guys, have had this problem for some time now, and wondering if it's a common problem with an easy solution, because either it's starting to get worse, or I'm just starting to get more annoyed by it. I know very, very little about hardware.

I have an optical USB Microsoft mouse plugged into the PS/2 port with a converter. I'm pretty sure i ran all the junky driver stuff on the CD that came with it, but since it's a microsoft mouse I figured the windows drivers would do the job fine anyway... Regardless, I sort of ignored the minor details because it mostly does the job fine. But often (seemingly more often of late) i will single click, but a double click is registered (ie. closing the browser window behind, or opening the next folder/file in that same position in windows explorer, etc.). I consider myself to have competent mousemanship ( ) and it doesn't seem to have much to do with the manner of clicking (ie. how long since last click, how long button held, which part of button pressed). Sometimes it does it, sometimes not. Sometimes it will seem to happen every other click, sometimes i can have a decent 10+ minute run without noticing it happening at all.

If it's of any consequence it happens no matter what program/game i'm using, and is frustrating when playing online games

(Before anybody suggests it, it's not that I have my double click speed set really slow, cos I don't)

I'm sure it wasn't always like this, and it's really starting to bug me. Is there a simple solution, or should I just get the new mouse I kinda want anyway? Have you tried going into the control panel and checking your settings for the mouse? Try it for the "Folders" too. In the folders, you'll find options for "double click/single click" for opening folders. It sounds as if this may be (part of) your problem.

Which is exactly what you would want to do. The faster you set it, the more likely a single click will act as a double click.

Why?
Does your system not have a usb port or are they all taken?
Adapters are unreliable and can cause the kind of issues you're having.
If slowing down the double click speed doesn't help and you've checked all the settings in the mouseware it would appear you have installed, eliminating the adapter would be where I went next.

I meant to imply that it wasn't just that it was registering two clicks that were just a little too close together for the mouse settings. (Slow, fast, depends how you look at it, one of those relative things sort of)

Changing the dbl-click speed doesn't help, i've tried. It seems to register the click as two amazingly close-together clicks, so no matter how fast/slow it's set, it still registers as a double.

The USB ports are indeed all full, but I'll move some stuff onto the other computer, cos the adapter seems to work fine on that one. Hopefully that will help.

And to the first guy, yes I've tried checking/playing with the mouse settings to no avail.
