I have just changed from having separate Norton Anti Virus and Fire Wall to Internet Security.
One thing i have noticed in particular is how slow the response is from Internet Security.
It takes about 15 seconds to load and about 60 seconds to exit.Live Update is also very slow.I have also noticed that to exit from Outlook Express is not immediate.Norton are not much help ,they suggest that my computer needs a tune up which it dosn't.
It is Norton Internet Security that needs the tune up.But how?
Any advice would be gratefully received.
Philip Brampton.

Are you running teatimer, spywareguard, and now norton antivirus at the same time?
If so that could be killing your machine. If you have spybot's teatimer installed, you can uninstall spywareguard

I was faced with the same problem and ended up removing NIS and replacing it with Norton 2004. There is a world of difference in the speed. I think Norton laid an egg with the "Internet Security" at least speed wise.

Any difference in speed since removing spywareguard? It is possible as johr as has said that the Internet Security suite is a lemon

I have tried uninstalling all my security programmes one at a time to see if any of them is the culprit. Not the slightest difference was noticed. Therefore i must conclude the problem is Norton itself. In the meantime i have emailed Symmantec again.Don't hold your breath.
I will keep you posted.

NIS 2005 Continued.
My patience is exausted. After a signifcant number of emails to Symantec the problems are unresolved.I have therefore returned it from whence it came.
It is a great pity because Norton software has always been considered a market leader.
I am now trying AVG,first impressions are favourable.I would also like to try Trend micro.I hear good reports.

To continue.
Symantec are very concerned that i have binned NIS 2005.
They emailed me again this Morning.Asking for details of what exactly the problems are.I must have told them 10 times already.
So all is not lost yet.
To be continued.

I would just stick with AVG. And scrap Norton for good. I have heard many complaints concerning Norton over time. Though this is just MHO.

Thanks Scarlett.
I am beginning to like AVG a lot.
Maybe i will wait a little longer to see if NIS can be sorted. That is before i bring out the big guns.

More rubbish from Norton. They didn't like being told the problem was NIS 2005 and not my computer.

Dear Phillip and Phawgg,
I'm on the verge of dumping NIS as well. I have NIS 2005 on my computer (Windows 2000 Pro) for a couple of months now and my MS Outlook Express is functioning very poorly. Failing to connect even when my Internet is working fine, failing to receive, failing to send, emails getting lost, etc. etc. My ISP tech had me try converting to Outlook, same problems. He said "there's obviously something wrong with Outlook (Outlook Express). I was on the phone with Norton about 6 weeks ago, they had me uninstall EVERYTHING NORTON including SystemWorks 2003, not once, but twice...and I still have problems. It was a very involved and painful process to do that. Had no such problems with 2003.
I also have a new problem since installing NIS 2005 - my 16-bit program operations fail, because it says "C:\Winnt\System32\config.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications." I have to reinstall/expand 3 files from the OS disk almost every day now. Not sure if Norton caused this, or something else...sound familiar at all?
Thanks,
Paula

Check to see if you have an config.nt in your c:\winnt\repair folder. If it exists copy it to the c:\winnt\system32 directory .

Dear Paula.
I am glad i am not alone.I am also running W2000 which i like a lot.
There is only one place for NIS 2005.I leave that to your imagination.

sorry guys, i just can NOT read about norton without adding my two cents worth.
i had a PAID version of norton..got a VERY nasty trojan horse..erased ALL my favorites, stole my home page, directed me to some really nasty porn...i went to the norton website, also...finding nothing there to help, sent them an e-mail...i received instructions to call an 800 number, with my credit card handy, it would be a $30 charge to instruct me in how to remove said t.h.
a bit apalled, i wrote them back, pointing out that i had paid them already, to keep the darn thing OUT in the first place...now they were telling me i had to pay them AGAIN...to remove something i already paid them to keep out.
to cut it short....that was the best they could do. very furtunately for me, i was directed to THIS marvelous site..and, lo and behold! the nasty was removed...for FREE.....(i love these guys)!!!!
Care to guess what happened to norton when my year's subscription ran out?
hope all goes well for you,

Hi, Grinler -
Thanks for the speedy response! Here are the error messages I get, and the fix instructions I got from the Microsoft website:
ERROR MESSAGES:
16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
path to the program that you are trying to start or install
C:\Winnt\System32\config.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

config.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
path to the program that you are trying to start or install
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.
Insert Windows 2000 CD
Start > Run > cmd (OK): Type:
expand D:\i386\config.nt_ c:\winnt\system32\config.nt
expand D:\i386\autoexec.nt_ c:\winnt\system32\autoexec.nt
expand D:\i386\command.co_ c:\winnt\system32\command.com
exit
Sounds kind of like what you were suggesting? I'd love to find a permanent solution, since this affects programs I use every day, like my Realtors' Multiple Listing service program, and I notice also that Windows Explorer behaves funny - I open it, but when I double--click on the folder I want to open, I hear a funny little buzz sound and it disappears. When I perform the instructions above, everything works fine...for a little while (day or two). Could this be a virus? NIS says I have none, but from what I've been reading here, that could not be true. Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Paula

Well you can try these:
Please run two online virus scans:
http://housecall.antivirus.com/http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/Then let us know if its working better and what the scans found.
And see if they pick up anything. Have you copied the autoexec.nt and config.nt from the c:\winnt\system32\repair to c:\winnt\system32? Does that fix the error?
