Guide Overview

When your computer will not connect to the Internet on a high speed connection (Cable, ADSL, Satelitte) sometimes it needs to aquire a new IP address or Gateway. This is common when the power goes out or you move the computer from one LAN to another. This Guide will instruct you on how to obtain a new IP address or Gateway. for your computer.

Note: This guide will only work for those people who are using DHCP to get their IP address and Gateway from their Internet Provider.

Instruction

1. First click on Start then Run and type command in the Open: field and press the OK button.
   
   
2. To determine what your IP address and default gateware are we need to run ipconfig.exe. Type ipconfig.exe and press enter. The Default Gateway address and the IP Address will be displayed. Regardless of whether there are addresses listed here, continue with the next two steps.
   
   
3. You will need to release your current IP address and gateway in order to get a new one. If this turns out not to be the problem with your computer, this proceedure will not hurt anything by attempting it. Release your current IP by typing the following ipconfig /release and then press enter. This will release any assigned IP addresses and gateways from your computer.
   
   
4. Next you need to type in ipconfig /renew to get a new IP address or default gateway. On the screen your should see your new Default Gateway and IP Address. If you are using a router or your IP has not changed on your modem then the addresses may not have changed.
   
   
5. Type exit to leave the command prompt and get to Windows.

These changes should take effect immediately.

What is the purpose of reseting ip address?

So does this change the ip or does it just make sure that your computer can coonect to your ip?

Sorry, wtf is this...... "If you are using a router or your IP has not changed on your modem then the addresses may not have changed." how are you just gonna leave half the people reading this hanging.... If you are going to make a guide please do it all the way and the correct way. i doubt this has helped more than 10% of the people who looked at this...




and for the other people, if the CMD says you need permission to do the action you are trying to do. you have to exit out of the cmd, right click it and "Run as Administrator"

Doesn't right clicking on your "Network Connection" and choosing "REPAIR" achieve the exact same things in fewer, less-complicated steps?

i highly doubt it does.... i'm sure people would have posted about that already lol, but check idk, i am using.... or trying, SMAC atm

The following actions are taken if you select the Repair option on a LAN or high-speed Internet connection.

NOTE: The actions occur in the order that they are listed. A corresponding command is listed next to each action.
• Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) lease is renewed: ipconfig /renew
• Address Resolution Protocol (ARP) cache is flushed: arp -d *
• Reload of the NetBIOS name cache: nbtstat -R
• NetBIOS name update is sent: nbtstat -RR
• Domain Name System (DNS) cache is flushed: ipconfig /flushdns
• DNS name registration: ipconfig /registerdns

I was wondering if I could get some help with this.
I desparately need to reset my IP.
However I am using a router, and the IP will not reset via this method.
Is there anything I can do?
