hi this is my first time asking about a problem
i have a compaq presario 5004US that i just had aquired and i installed windows xp professional on it i had no problems with it until i decided to connect it to the internet. when i boot it up everything starts up just fine until i get to the internet connection. it will try to connect but it will say that my connection is either limited or there is no conection. i disabled the windows firewall but it seemed to have no effect. i have an older gateway that i'm using now and the connection is fine. my internet service provider is Comast High Speed Internet. is there anything that could be causing this?
can anybody help me?!
THANKS!! Tom Russell

uumm ok i tried it and here's what it said:
when i ran CMD : "ipconfig /release" it said this:
Connection-Specific DNS Suffix . :
IP Adress. . . . . . . . . . . :0.0.0.0
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . :0.0.0.o
Default Gateway .. . . . . . . . :
(which is the computer that i am using now that works fine with it)
then i ran CMD: "ipconfig /renew" and it said this:
Windows IP Configuration
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 4:Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
are there anymore suggestions that might help me?
thanks Tom Russell

What type of connection do you have ? Wired or WIreless? What type of card, PCMCIA, USB, Onboard? What router are you using and what type of modem?

i have cable internet (comcast high speed internet) and the computer is a desktop so it is wired internet. and the card is a Linksys LNE100TX fast Ethernet Adapter Version 1.0. i do not have a router and the modem comcast gave me is a Scientific Atlanta modem.
Shut down the computer
Unplug power from the modem for ~2 minutes
Plug the modem back in and wait for all the lights to
do their thing.
Boot the computer back up.
You should have a new IP now.
