Hi there:

For about a year, I have had this strange problem with the sound on my computer. I was first running windows 98se and changed up to W2K.

The problem is while playing a game of any kind or using a client such as babaschess on the FIC site, I would get a sudden increase or decrease in volume level. These increases/decreases would be at no specific times. Very erratic, with no pattern to them. Sometimes it would be so load I would jump off the chair. It would be like someone turned the volume to the top and when I turned it down, it may stay at a listenable level for a time and then, minutes later, go too low to hear. This may happen once in a week, once in a four hour period or some times a couple of times in an hour. But, with games local to my computer, as well as games played on the net.

I've come to think it's possibly a physical defect in the motherboard or something...

or

some kind of a virus, but I can't trace it using:

cleanup
CWShredder
AD-Aware SE Personal
Spybot-Search and Destroy
and
AVG7 Personal

...all in safemode.

I have a GigabyteGA-7N400 Pro2 Motherboard with onboard AC97 codec.
The drivers Realtek AC97 "ALCXWDM.sys" 16/12/2005 Ver. 5.10.0.5990 built by WinDDK.

The Video card is an ATI AIW 9600Pro.

Catalyst software updated to:ATI MMC 9-80 and 5-13_xp-2k_dd_ccc_wdm_enu_29124.exe.

before I change out the board...

Has any one experienced a similar problem?

Can anyone help?
