Hi all,
I have a windows 2003 sp1 server that i use as a workstation and while trying to cleanout some spyware, one of the cleaners must have removed an important system file or corrupted something.
on boot, i get a winlogon.exe error (application error the instruction at 0x00fe1c6a referenced memory at 0x00000014. if i click ok or cancel, my computer reboots. If i leave the error up, i can still login but nothing comes up on my desktop. No icons, no taskbar nothing. If i ctrl+alt+del i can get into the task manager and stoping and restarting explorer.exe does nothing. Any task i launch shows up in the list, but i don't see anything.

If i boot into safemode, once i login i get an Explorer.ese "The application failed to initilize properly 0xc0000005 click ok to terminate the application.

This machine is not a domain controller, nor is it part of a domain. Is there any way to replace explorer.exe? Any info would be great

Thanks,
Tony

Uh, pertinent to 2003, the link says:

Windows Server 2003
There is no hotfix or update currently available to resolve this problem in Windows Server 2003.

Hopefully your spyware cleaning has a back up?? Restore it, then clean one file at a time and maybe find the culprit.

Others may know of another way, but reninstalling Windows is the only way I know of to get explorer.exe back.

Do you have any Symantec software? Contact them. Some similar problems were possibly associated with Symantec.

Good luck.
