I get an error message when my machine starts: "There is an error in CONFIG.SYS There is an unrecognized command on Line 8." How do I fix?
Running Windows 98 on clunky old IBM Thinkpad.
Not sure how to find the actual file and display its contents, otherwise I'd attach it below.
Here's what FileAnalyzer has to say:

DebMarieGreene:
Click Start, Run, type in sysedit
This will show you all of your configuration files. You could copy and paste the contents of the config.sys back here for us to look at.
Typically, the config.sys is located on the root of the c:\ drive. Not in the location that you have shown below. I believe, and I could be wrong, that the file that you have shown below is copied over to a rescue disk with the Rescue Disk utility on your ThinkPad.

You mentioned that it was the error identified Line 8.
If you put a REM in front of line 8, this will stop that line from loading.
DOS will not load the lines with REM in front of them. I prefer to use REM over removing the line completely. If that is not the right line, we can always remove the REM.
Looking at the contents of the config.sys file that you replied with, it looks like the following line needs the REM.
ccApp
It would look like this...
REM ccApp
Now...this entry would be for Norton Antivirus, are you still using this on that laptop?
Are you getting the latest updates? Has the subscription run out?
If you are no longer using it, and you want suggestion for free antivirus programs, I will be happy to advise.
Anyways, try the line that you mentioned was causing the error, and let us know the result.
Thanks,
