Hello,
I was prompted by Symantec/Norton to "upgrade" my Live Updates for virus protection and after I did so I continue to get the following message:

The following updates have been aborted:
<Norton AntiVirus Virus Definitions has 1 aborted update(s)
Reason:
LU1875: This update failed during its processing welcome text phase

I smell a rat. Is the Symantec's way of compelling the purchase of more current product?

Is there any cure for this problem? Symantec's tech support website (service.symantec.com) doesn't have any information on this Live Update error.

...assistance much appreciated...
acklan
The cure? Move to one of the freeware antivirus'. We encourage all of then. I left MacAfee for AVG with no regets.

Antivirus (Run only one.)
AVG Free Edition Antivirus (I personally use)
Avast Home Edition Antivirus Freeware
AntiVir Personal Edition Classic Freeware
BitDefender 8 Free Edition AntiVirus Freeware

Hi,
I'm presuming you've had no problems with the free antivirus program you use? I'm no patriot for Norton, I'll tell you that. I just had a SpyAxe infection that Norton didn't even recognize in my system. I had to download freeware to monitor whether I finally got rid of it. Then I called their tech support about this problem and was on hold for about a half hour before I got a guy who told me my version is unsupported and I'd have to try to find a remedy for my problem through their automated site....sweet.

Thanks for the recommendation.
ccarter
Wow! Thanks for all the assistance. I'm going to look into all of these suggestions.

Happy Holidays!
bickforc
There is an workaround - that's if you would prefer to stick with Norton: just use their Intelligent Updater

Hope this helps.

BTW, I use AVG free edition on one of my PCs and it has never failed me yet! Updates are automated and the footprint is almost non-existent compared to other AV programs I've used in the past - especially NIS and NAV.

On the subject of whether a rat is there to be smelled or not, I am convinced that the first moon landing was a hoax - so these things are always possible I suppose. However, I don't think a multi-billion dollar company like symantec would risk the bad press. It is crappy though that they have withdrawn support so early! The only way to counter that is when you hear of someone considering Norton as their AV protection, make sure you make them aware of all the facts before they buy!

I had this problem ...it means it has been corrupted............

I just uninstalled and use Free AVG AV now with no problems.

Did you scrap Norton, or are you tuffing it out?

You may see the LU1875 error message if your computer is infected by the Trojan.Abwiz.F threat.

1. On running live update you get the “LU1875 error – The update failed during its pre-processing update welcome text phase.”
2. Click on the error to get to the Norton help site
3. Ignore the “Information about the outbreak of Trojan.AbwiI z.F.” I wasted a lot of time on this and got nowhere.
4. Use “Automatically download virus definitions with the Intelligent Updater” press download.
5. This will almost certainly NOT work. It states that Active X must be installed. The instructions here are lousy and I suspect this is the source of most failures by folks reported all over the net. I tried numerous times to use their “Install ActiveX”. Only by trial and error did I get it to work. The only way you can tell if Active X is working is if the automatic download begins to work. If it doesn’t you haven’t got Active X installed they way they want you to. I am sorry I can’t be more specific but I tried numerous times and don’t remember what I did to get this to work.
6. Once you get Active X working the automatic assistant will come up, press download
7. You may get an internet security message (download iucab (Symantec Corp)?), if so press run
8. You may get a “Windows script host message, download virus definitions, this may take 15 minutes". If you close this box the auto-download does not work. So leave it alone till the download is complete
9. Once you have got this to work the next time you simply repeat the above but don’t worry about the Active X (you have already solved this problem).

Hi there, I've just joined you.

I have had this LU problem for months and only today have I found you and got it fixed. I used the Intelligent Updater from the above link, it did take 40 mins to do, but it's worked and I'm up to date.

Thank you so much. smile.gif
ferrit
I am pleased you were successful in sorting out your problem. I am sorry it took you 40 minutes. Norton knows more than we do and for some reason (perhaps profit or stupidity) they do not care. If you have any information beyond what I posted it might help the next person, Personally when my subscription runs out I shall pick another company. This is sad because I like Norton and want to continue with it. But I do not' like being screwed with.

Congratulations. Which link did you use.
Tosca
I used the link from bickfork in post No. 6 and then read ferrits instructions. I did close that box the first time so had to go back and do it again.

I can't add anything to what you've already said, ferrit. I think you've about covered it. However, I never got anything about Active X but I was asked to install about 3 or 4 different things. I just said yes to all of them and away I went.
ferrit
Norton now has a new trick. The solution I described above (using the intelligent updater) now hangs up; I have changed nothing in what I do. So I have gone over to Manual update. I guess in a week they will find out we got it to work and change it again to make life difficult.

1. go to : http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...s.download.html
2. Pick the option (e.g. in my case Norton anti-virus for windows/9X/NT/Me/2000/XP
3. Click download updates
4. Click on 20060506-023-i32.exe
5. Click Run on next window
6. It will download definitions
7. Click run in response to "do you wan to run"
8. Another box says do you want to run, click yes
9. Click OK to next box, your done
Tosca
Cheers, ferrit.

Grrrrrrrrr to Norton. What are they like? I wouldn't mind except that my sub is still valid until July. What on earth are we paying for eh?
SusanJW
Hi, I found this thread while searching for information on this error. I argued with Symantec tech support yesterday and am so mad! They are blocking updates in my opinion, in order to get more money. I think this is an illegal move on their part. Thy sold me a years subscription and I only got 3 months. Sure they offer a 2 for one year deal to upgrade, but it's the principle. I'm looking for a class action attorney.
Tosca
It looks like I got in just in time then. If they are deliberately blocking updates, then they are well out of order. My sub is still valid and I expect to get what I'm paying for. I know there is no technical support available anymore for 2003, but that should not include updates.

Susan, I'd be interested to hear how you get on.
Juliet
I wanted to insert a help link for scanning error problems with Nortons software.....
Even tho you may have corrected your issues another might see this and be able to use it and solve theirs.

Use The Auto Fix Tool

when an error is found help links will most often be supplied.
ferrit
As regards "Grrrrrrrrr to Norton" from "Tosca", I like your sense of humor which makes me feel better but doesn't solve the problem "SusanJW" has a more practical approach (concerning a class action suit) but having spent $10,000 on a minor legal matter this last few months this is unfortunately easier said than done. My subscription doesn't run out till Jan 2007, so I am equally annoyed and I plan to get my moneysworth and use Norton till then whatever it takes!, but probably not after unless things change.
ferrit
Juliet - do you work for Norton? The link you provide pretends to be an autofix but actually when followed all it does is give us the option to pay for an upgrade without fixing the existing subscription for which we have already paid. If you haven't read the string yet please do. This con is the whole thing everyone is complaining about.
Juliet
Hello ferrit.....very nice to met you.
Do I work for Nortons?.......No I am not employed with Symantec, but have learned how to offer help to those who have errors with the software from time to time.

The link I provided is a tool that quick scans for viruses and software issues.....
What caught my attention was the topic title.....Norton AntiVirus Virus Definitions has 1 aborted update(s)
Reason:
LU1875: This update failed during its processing welcome text phase

So I researched it.........And I found a few links that I thought would aid in repair for LiveUpDate as you did.
I have used Intelligent updater several times and still feel secure using Nortons and safe surfing habits.
Myself I install manually and find that as reliable.

I have been a Nortons user since 2002 and have been somewhat satisfied but was disgusted with the 2004 NIS version....found that to be to buggy.
Through my own research for my own errors I have been able to help others with some that are related.....Or help locate help links for those who don't know how to manipulate the knowledge base.

I also help at other forums.....

I made sure the link I posted was working before I supplied the link.....

If you are having error messages with a subscription issue it should had been posted when the scan was finished.
slunge
Hi all...

my first post, i spent ages trying to solve this... see below i figured now ive fixed it others should have this answer as well, this method means live update works as it shuold and no need for inteli updater - it actually fixes the lu1875 problem

Error: “LU1875 This update failed during its preprocessing welcome text phase”‘

Juliet
Another link found while searching was to Update LiveUpDate to the most recent version of
LiveUpdate found here.....
How to obtain the current version of LiveUpdate

Also a side note for information on How to Reset Norton System Doctor
Tosca
I went to install. It still didn't work. So, I went back and did a manual install. It still didn't work. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr.

The one I did before was the only one that has worked for me, if that's gone.....well, I don't know.
Juliet
Sorry your having so many problems....
errors happened when you tried to install from Intelligent Updater or did you try the newest version of LiveUpDate?
Try this quick scan from the Symantec site.....Use the Auto Fix Tool
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/home_home...e/index_ts.html

Intelligent Updater releases a new update package daily......you cannot download and install one that has been previously used.
Here is Today's release......For Tuesday May 9th

http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcen...ges/US-N95.html

If you download to desktop.....disconnect from the internet.......
Double click the download and follow the prompts.

Slunge, you are indeed a computer God. I did as you suggested; finally the LU1875 error is fixed. Many thanks.
sandran
I am sandy Newsome and have a computer problem. When I run liveupdate, at the end it saysthat LU 1875 could not update, what to do to get this error fixed>
Bellator
I had the same LU1875 error with my NIS 2004. The method proposed by Slunge did help me but I found the solution at a Symantec Support page.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/share...dd?OpenDocument

Be sure to check for your specific product (you dont have to run all of the commands just the on for your specifik product). I had to edit the command as my NIS is installed under c:\Program\ so this is what I ran:

1) regsvr32 /u "c:\program\norton internet security\norton antivirus\navlucbk.dll"
2) reboot
3) regsvr32 "c:\program\norton internet security\norton antivirus\navlucbk.dll"
4) reboot

(Be sure to include the quotation mark!)
junior1
ferrit,

I went with ur manual update on the pervious page, and it works,

I was wondering how often should i update manually? and which update to choose (i mean are all updates the same ?, but for different versions
ferrit
Hi Junior 1, it all depends on how afraid of viruses you are. Updating once a week manually should be fine. The Manual update requires you select the version of Windows you are using that determines which anti-virus group you are getting; so do it and don't worry about it. Try Slunge's suggestion it really does fixe the autoupdate.
Tosca
I'm sorry if I'm being thick but how do you unregister and re-register a dll?
junior1
ferrit,

I was to do the update manually would that be ok?

I am not really a compter buff and dont know much about how to register and re-register files sad.gif
junior1
Do i carry out the following steps?

1. Unregister Navlucbk.dll (C:\program files\norton antivirus\navlucbk.dll)

a. Click Start > Run
b. In the Run dialogue box type or paste:
regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\navlucbk.dll"
(include vertical quote marks as above, not slanted or curved (“x”)

2. Reregister Navlucbk.dll
a. Click Start > Run
b. In the Run dialogue box type or paste:
regsvr32 "c:\program files\norton antivirus\navlucbk.dll"

3. Perform a disk Cleanup
4. Restart the Computer
5. Run liveupdate again

If Navlucbk.dll is in another folder, you might have to use that.
junior1
anyone, does my above post register/unregister the file and does this really work?

can you guys please help me

thanks
ferrit
Junior1 - your cry of pain finally turned on the guilt. I am as computer-illiterate as you but perhaps "a fool more willing to go where wise men fear to tread".

The "start" button is is on the left bottom of the page by left clicking you bring up a menu by clicking on "Run" you bring up a dialog box.

1. By pasting "regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\navlucbk.dll" into the box you are UNREGISTERING the navlucbk.dll file. I think you have to press enter.

2. By pasting "regsvr32 "c:\program\norton internet security\norton antivirus\navlucbk.dll" you are REGISTERING the file. You probably have to press enter afterwards.

I did not find it necessary to perform a disk clean-up.

As I said I am computer illiterate too so god only knows what registering and re-registering does but it works in this instance.

Be Brave!
senseless
to slunge, thanks for the help! it worked for me and i am quite illiterate. anybody else trying this fix, sorry for being obvious, but the path and spelling has to be correct! i did not do the disc cleanup, just a reboot. maybe someone could explain what the disc cleanup does and why it's a good idea after the fix. thanks again.
Erlan
To Ferrit, many thanks for the tips on manually updating. I tend to panic when I see error messages..and I was delighted to find this forum and your tip.

Cheers E.
pigscanfly
tongue.gif hey guys cheers for the help, ive only just recently got the msg tht my definitions are out of date and didnt know wat to do but uve sorted it out so thx clapping.gif
JewelTones
I can't thank the people in this thread enough for all the guidance! I, too, have the Norton Internet Security 2003 software with the Antivirus installed on my computer and recently started getting the pop-up warning that my definitions were expired. Whenever I'd try to update them, I'd get the LU1875 error that kept me from completing the live update and -- like several other people have mentioned -- I've since discovered that they no longer "support" my software version even though I just renewed my subscription for a full year in March. That means I paid $42 for 3 months of service. Talk about the shaft. I'll be calling my credit card company and going that route for a resolution.

Anyway, I have now updated my definitions... so thank you so much! I used Ferrit's link for the automatic download with the i32.exe, but I had a question. Do I have to do this every time I need to update my definitions or will this have fixed that problem?

And for the Norton stance of not supporting the 2003 software anymore... what exactly does that entail? "Just" technical support? Or am I going to be running into other problems with the actual software function? And was this automatic update issue an extension of Norton not supporting the 2003 software version any more?

Thank you again. This topic was a life saver!

Symantec has a document made for this problem.
Here u go, This is imo the best so far.

Hi all, I'm a newbie here and am really thankful for all the great help on this prob. Finally fixed!!!
I did use the that Saitzu recommended and it worked fine. "Live Update" is up and running again.

Thanks again!!

Your welcome, i am glad i could be of assistance.

Hello,

I just wanted to share that I just used the suggestion posted by Bellator (6/19/06) and it worked! I did, however, have to go through the whole series twice. But Live Update is working properly again.

Thank you all!
Forest
It also took me two times (I may have goofed the first time but I don't think so), and I was able to run Live Update once again.

I also strongly encourage anyone out there to switch away from Norton $ymantec and get one of the free antivirus programs out there, like AVG or Avast.

My experience with $ymantec the past four years has always been negative. Their support is useless and they have an arrogant company culture which is even worse than Microsoft's. This problem is just the latest backhanded attempt to force users of "unsupported" $ymantec products to update to their buggy 2006 products. Do you think it would make sense for $ymantec to link to their fix page from the error code?? They are a soulless, user-unfriendly purveyor of f**ked-up software. That's why so many people won't use their products. I'm bailing as soon as my subscription is up.

Thank you very much for posting this fix
.
mike_in_nm
There is a solution to this posted on the symantec.com tech support page. The trick is that you cant search for "LU1875:..." because the colon makes the search some up empty.

Here's how to find the correct fix:

1. go to http://symantec.com/techsupp/home_homeoffi...html?src=hho_us

2. type "LU1875" in the "Search Our Solutions Library" box at the bottom of the page and hit enter.

3. Click on the link provided and follow the instructions.

This fixes the problem and you will be able to use live update.
Tosca
Thank you, Mike.
I've printed it off and will do it tomorrow. I'm off to bed now.
Fingers crossed.
My sub runs out at the end of this month and I don't really know where to go now. Not with Norton, I think.
