Alright, I just recieved a x800 pro and when I put it in and start up the computer, I get a black screen. I've been trying to fix this but nothing seems to work.
Dell Dimensions 4550
trying out a 550 watt power supply
1 gig of ram
windows xp
old card was geforce 4 mx 420 (which works fine when I put it back in)
I don't know if i'm missing anything, could anybody help?

Hi Wizdabest
In order to help you we will need more information on your system, When you replace a video card it is best practice to uninstall all the drivers for your old card.
And setup windows for the standard VGA mode, when that has been done.
Turn off your PC at the mains, fit new card then reboot.
Please post back with any problems

I have uninstalled the old drivers, I have even tried hooking up a new power supply, but it didn't seem to work. I noticed at the dell community forums that there are many others with the same problem, so i'm thinking its just my comptuer.
What happens is,
It boots up to the first dell screen, then the screen blinks, normal, but then it stops loading and the screen goes black. I also notice that the light in the front isn't lit when the screen goes black. I put take the new card out and put the old card back in and it works just fine.

WHEN YOU BOOT the PC go into the Bios setup Look for the AGP info
I.E AGP x2=x4=8
Motherboard
Also check that any on board video driver is disabled.
Lets look at this as a start.

Hi Wizdabest
When a system first boots on the screen you will see message = to enter setup press = F2 = OR = Delete, ECT.
The information is also in the hands out from Dell when you first purchased your computer.
If you have problems finding the key or key combinations ask on the Dell forum.

Should work fine...take out all other cards but the required ones like the new video card and see if it boots up. Could be a conflict with another card for some reason. If itworks that way, keep placing each card back in one at a time, and testing and seeing what happens. That way you can find the card that is conflicting.
Memory, power supply, etc should be more than adequate.

Does your X800 need a power supply connection? My FX6800 OC did, and at first we forgot to connect it. It wouldn't boot up. Then we attached the power connector and it worked fine.
I'm not familiar with the X800 cards so I don't know if this would apply or not. Just thinking of things...
Good luck.

yea, we've hooked up a power cable to it, even tried a bigger power supply.
It should be working fine but it seems that many other dell owners are having the same problem, so I'm thinking I should just take it back to the store and get my money back and use that money to get a better motherboard, with agp 8x, that way i can get a 6800 gt.

Alright, well its over with the x800 pro, just took it back. I noticed that Bestbuy had a bunch of 6800 gts and they were also agp 4x/8x, I have read that people seem to be having better luck with Nvidia cards than ATI cards on the dells so I might try to get the 6800 gt.

Its really big, easiest way to say it, it blocks an IDE plug its so big. BFG tech from bestbuy made overclocked, 2 fans. Quite heavy.

Alright, I'm confused, Halo runs a lot better, I can actually change the video settings, and it runs with full settings with smooth gameplay.
Yet, on a game like Counter Strike, the fps stays at 60, which was the same fps as my geforce 4 got, are there settings or something that are holding the 6800 back?

oh okay nvm, VSYNC alright, net_graph in counter strike shows 100 fps now

Awesome...is it tearing at 100fps?
Wizdabest

tearing?
For some reason though, the fps seems to drop on Deleted Scenes. Everything else is playing really well, especially HALO. It looks awsome.

Sometimes when you go to fast and fps gets too high the graphics tear. Glad its working out nicely
