I have multiple problems with this machine right now, so I'll just give a summary of what I know and see if anyone can help. Sound good?

Well this machine is running Fedora Core 3. It is up to date (I run yum update all the time).

First problem: VMware. It used to work for me and would run WindowsXP Pro for the few things I needed it for. Apparantly after a kernal update, it wants to be re-configured. Well it screwed up (royally) so I tried to uninstall and reinstall. After some grief, it finally reinstalled. I ran the vmware-config.pl program as it requested, and it appears to be a success. Then when I try to run vmware, it says run the script again. Okay, so I try that. The script locks up, I Crtl + C, and try again. Same result. Close the shell down and it won't come back. Linux won't shut down for anybody, so I have to hold the power button and reboot. Sounds like fun doesn't it?

Second problem: I run mIRC with wine to run a bot I programmed years ago. It's been running fine to until recently. What set it off was I tried "Save settings" or whatever it's called when logging out while wine and other programs were still running. It didn't like trying to do that with wine and that's when this all started. Wine refused to run mirc.exe from then on. I soon figured out that it was a problem with the exe itself, not wine. So I transferred it to my Linux box again. It runs fine. Once. If you shut it down and try to run it again, it's dead. Transfer mIRC again: fine for one run.

Other misc. problems that could be related to the above: As this machine has 120GB of space, I use it for backup and storage on occasion. I recently formatted my WindowsXP laptop, and I used it as a place to backup the files I wanted to keep. I also mentioned the mirc.exe. Here's the problem: AVG on my windows machine pick any exe's that are on my linux box as virus infected. Just for curiousity sake, I downloaded a Linux virus scanner which picked up the same files as infected (but fixable). The mirc.exe is one of them. Not sure what's up there but I figured I'd mention it anyway.

Last issue: I have a TV Tuner card installed (link) and I want to install some software to be able to take advantage of it. Everything I've tried has been impossible to install. Any suggestions?

When VMWare locks up does it lock the whole machine?

I know you want to use a program you wrote, but why not use Egggdrop
or some other BOT? Most are highly configurable. I'd get away from
mIRC and wine.(rewrite the bot to work in Xchat)

What is the virus scan saying it's infected with?

Never used the Leadtek card...i have a Hauppage and
use TVTime with no problems. I also have XawTV and it works,
but i prefer TVTime.

No, but it pretty well damages it's running ability. Shells won't open. Linux won't shut down properly.. etc. I wind up having to try to shut it down and then holding the power button to get it to do it.


May give it a shot. But still, it should work. It's worked fine for about 6 months.


The linux scanner I downloaded (vascan-1.2.2-4.2.13-Linux) says the following:

r - rename, q - quarantine, d - delete, k - kill, s - skip, p - stop?

I can do kill, but it shows up again in subequent scans, and I'd really rather not delete every exe I backed up, lol.



I have TVTime, but the picture doesn't look so hot and I don't think it captures video does it? I'll look into XawTV and see what I can find.

Are you not able to ctrl-alt-F1 into a shell and kill the VM process?

The virus problem might be why mirc doesnt function any longer.

TVTime does not capture video, XawTV does...although all i've
been able to grab is sound the video will not show on playback

Awesome, is it easy to install? I'm going to look it up when I get home from Florida.

If mirc doesn't need to be "installed" you can just
download a fresh copy and keep it on the Linux side.
Or find out why the exe is getting re-infected.

XawTV just installed itself when HW detection found my
TV card, but in FC its easy :
as root root@localhost$rpm -Uvh xawtv
or use one of the GUI package managers. (kpackage if you use KDE)
It will probably need dependencies.

I tried that. The fresh copy gets infected too. It isn't really picky about what it infects.

I don't know the ins and outs of mirc, but how is
it becoming infected if you have it on a Linux
partition running through wine?
Personally I'd just use xchat and be done with it.
(or remove the virus)

Removing the virus is what I'm trying to do But I did some research on the virus (Linux scanners report one and Windows scanners report another) and I ran a scanner (windows scanner with wine) that I think took care of it. We'll see though.
