The following link should explain this:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT KNOPPIX

From that FAQ...

QUOTE
Q: What are these strange MD5 files that accompany the ISO CD images?

A: The files with the .md5 extension contain checksums for the actual CD
images. A checksum is a "matching number" for checking files. One can
verify that the file matches its original down to the smallest detail.
When you download both the ISO image for the CD and its corresponding .md5
file, you can verify that your download was complete and that the contents
are unchanged by typing "md5sum -c filename.md5" under Linux/Unix. Further
information about MD5 and programs for various OS's can be found at
http://www.fourmilab.ch/md5/. You can download a Windows™ version at

Hope that helps,

well, it sorta helps, but i still don't understand how to burn the cd.

I have Downloaded the zip file for the program, but when i extract it into a new folder, it doesn't find an ISO

there are 2 folders titled boot and KNOPPIX, and a couple of files titled autorun and such.

I tried using CD burner XP pro to burn the iso but it didn't find any iso files. I tried adding the files to the cd and burning as an ISO but it didn't work. Can someone please, help.

just curious btw, but wouldn't it make sense to add "how to burn a knoppix cd" to the tutorials section.

It is alittle different for each burning software. Most will allow you select the format. Burn it to .iso .
Mallen
but that doesn't tell me what files to put on the CD. I have tried unziping it and placing all files on the cd, but it doesn't work when i tell it to burn iso.

everyone keeps saying burn the iso image, but it never finds any iso images. It just finds all the files broken up.

I'm using CD burner XP btw.

let me see if i can clear this up.
the file you need to download is an ISO file.
This is the actual file name
KNOPPIX_V4.0.2CD-2005-09-23-EN.iso <---notice the ISO extension
Do not open it, unzip it, or try to do anything with it.

figured it out finally, when you said don't unzip i got confused. Then i remembered. See, I had winrar archiver on my PC. I just uninstalled it and the file changed from a .rar to .iso. burned and ran fine. I now get to play with my new toy. Thanks a bunch.
