Grinler
Bleeping Computer has a built-in messaging system called personal messages. This messaging system will allow you to send a private message to any other member on this site who is allowing personal messages.

There a few ways to send a personal message depending on where you are on the site. The easiest way, which we will discuss here, is to click on the My Controls link in the top member bar to enter the control panel.

Once in the control panel you will see a section in the left navigation area called Messenger. This is your personal messaging area. From here you can send messages, read messages, organize messages in folders, and delete read messages.

How to send a personal message

To send a message you simply click on the Compose New Message link. When you click on that link you will be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

To send the message you simply fill in the fields as described in the above image and press the Send Message button.

How to read a message

When you receive a new personal message, you will be notified of that in the member board when you are logged into the forums. Simply enter your control panel and click on the Inbox. You will now see a list of your messages. To the left of the message title you will see two icons which have the following meaning:

- This message is unread.

- This message has been read.

To read a message simply click on the link within the title of the message.

How to delete personal messages

Each member has a certain amount of storage space allocated towards their total amount of messages. When you reach or exceed that allocated storage space, you will no longer be able to receive any personal messages. All messages in every folder contribute to this used space, including messages in your Sent Items folder. It is therefore important to clean up your folders often by deleting messages. To see an indication of how much space is being used, you can click on a folder and you will see a gauge showing your approximate usage.

To delete a personal message you would enter the folder that contains the messages you want to delete and put a checkmark next to these messages. When you are done selecting the messages on that page, scroll down and press the Delete button.

It probably came as part of one of the upgrades.

It allows you to "block" - add to a list a specific member from whom you wish not to receive PMs. You will then not be notified when that member sends you a PM, nor will you get the PM. You might consider it similar to a SPAM filter, only for the PMs.

Some boards restrict this feature since PMs are used by the Admin/Mods, and "blocking" PMs from the Admin/Mod staff would be grounds for banning from the board.

You may notice over in the left side "Menu", under "Messenger" section there is a "PM Block List" selection. Selecting it will show you your "block" list as well as allow you to add or remove names from it. You can also put a reminder "reason" for why you blocked somebody.

Uem,

I just checked out of curiosity and w/o having done anything - I had "Grinler" on my blocklist blink.gif whistling.gif
How does that work? DMIJNV,O? lol
Grinler
You can add us to your block list, but it wont do anything. We will just ignore it smile.gif

Perhaps,

in the interest of board uniformity,

we should put someone in charge of everyone's block list.

We could call that person the

Block Head.

Just a suggestion.

Hi Grinler,
doubt that, as I also had Matt169 on there and I havent sent Matt a PM since before the update of the forum software mellow.gif

the people in my p.m buddies list were are all now in my block list except the ones that i had moved to my friends list.
i think everyones must be the same and they need to check them.thts why i have had only one p.m since the upgrade(either tht or am not that popular) hysterical.gif

uem i seem to be too thick to send a pm to multiple users. I have this list where "others" is written in the pic above, and there are a few names in there but not all of them. what do i do if i need to cc someone who is not in that list?

Manually input their name/s in the box marked as "Carbon Copy to other members".
Yourhighness

Mine's a wee bit different from Grinler's in the OP. He can CC 6,500 people, I can only CC one. Maybe HJT Senior Classmen aren't allow to CC anyone? wink.gif

Yourhighness
why redundant? it showed previously that you have the option right there and i dont? weird it is for sure o.O
Dialer
Yeah, it did. But then I saw Grinler's OP and realized it was already very well documented. If it's not too late, I'll put mine back, though.

We can certainly agree on the weirdness of the situation.
Yourhighness
am i the only one who ran out of carbon copies? sad.gif

A long shot - are you certain that you wait for the page to fully load?
Yourhighness
yep. I have dsl, it dont take long tongue.gif . It must be something with my profile settings, or that the board software didnt like my handle? dance.gif ?
Dialer
Maybe it's something to discuss with Grinler, then? <shrug>

Of course, he might not like your handle either. lmfao.gif

Heh - I didn't say to PM Grinler!
Grinler
I cleaned this up a bit. Only certain groups get to use the carbon copy feature due to spam issues.
Yourhighness
\./ lol ty Grinler.

I just thought "great here goes the silly German agian seeing things", or in this case "not seeing things" lol tongue.gif - I guess that means I now belong to "a certain group" whistling.gif .

Thanks Boss smile.gif
Dialer
I understand the spamming issue, Grinler, but since regular folks like me were limited to only one CC anyway, I thought it was a handy feature.

And I no longer do! sad.gif

Actually, I've only used CC once, and that was for a reply to another member. I wanted a staff member to be aware of the conversation, and I chose not to send it as a blind CC so that the recipient would realize that I had involved TPTB.
