Any advice on deleting the Trojan would be much appreciated.
Grinler
Download LQfix.exe and place it on your desktop.
Doubleclick LQfix.exe and click install.
Leave the default settings. If you change them, the fix will fail.
Make sure 'Launch LQfix' is checked. After clicking finish in the install, the fix will start.
Follow the prompts on the screen.
Your system will reboot afterwards.
Please be patient after reboot, because there is a script running in the background.

Post a new hjt log after its done.

Thanks. FWIW, a popup appeared when I rebooted.

Here's the new HJT log:

Thanks for your help.

The VTech and VPort files are part of some software for a simulated laptop educational program we bought a few years ago for one of our kids.

Bleeping computer. Looks like pokapoka is back. And palsp and zanu, among others, look suspicious.

Here's the latest log:

Run the LQFix program again and then in reboot into safe mode.

Uninstall Zango or Zangoclient from add/remove programs and then delete the following folders:

c:\program files\zangoclient\
c:\windows\system32\win\

Reboot and fix these two entries with HijackThis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [zanu] c:\program files\zangoclient\zanu.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Boarddata] c:\windows\system32\win\repcale.exe c:\windows\system32\win\palsp.exe

Then do the following:

Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

Thanks very much.

There were no zango or zangoclient files in the add/remove program menu, and I could not find the c:\programfiles\zangoclient folder, or the 04 - HKLM\. .\Run: [zanu] c:programfiles\zangoclient\zanu.exe entry. I ran Spybot and AdAware this morning -- perhaps one of those removed the zango files.

I deleted the other two folders/entries.

Here's the WinPFind log:

WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding.

If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding..." you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly.

Delete this file as well and reboot and post a new log:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\navshext.dll

Apparently these things just keep coming back.

I deleted the navshext.dll file.

Here's the latest HJT log:

Do me a favor before we continue make sure you all the windows updates. Also do you have any network shares? If so, disable them for now. Are you running a firewall? If not enable the windows firewall.

Is spywareguard giving any warnings when you try to fix these entries? If so, spyuwareguard may be keeping these entries active.

Click on start, run, msconfig, and then startups and uncheck spywareguard and reboot.

Then,

Please print out these instructions as you will be required to reboot your computer at times. Please read these directions before you proceed so that you understand what you will be doing.

Step 1:

Download the Killbox.

Unzip the contents of KillBox.zip to a convenient location and then double-click on KillBox.exe to launch the program.
  1. Select the Delete on Reboot option.

  2. Paste this file into the top Full Path of File to Delete field.

    c:\windows\system32\lockx.exe

  3. Click the Delete File button which looks like a stop sign.

  4. Click Yes at the Replace on Reboot prompt.

  5. Click No at the Pending Operations prompt.
Repeat step 1 through 5 above for each of the following files. The only difference is that you will be substituting the file listed in step 2 with each of the files below.

C:\WINDOWS\etb\pokapoka69.exe
c:\windows\system32\msdirectx.sys

After you add the last file and it prompts to reboot, you should press the Yes button to allow it to do so.

Then fix these entries with hijackthis after it reboots:

Thanks very much. I don't think this computer is networked. All windows updates installed. Windows firewall enabled, although I think pc-cillin firewall is enabled too.

I have never gotten a message from spywareguard.

Got a "___RenameOperation has been removed [or deleted] by an externalprocess!" message after hitting "Yes" to reboot after third killbox file. Went ahead and rebooted manually. Lockx and msdirectx files were gone, but not pokapoka.

Can't seem to get rid of pokapoka. It shows up on Startup on system config utility -- should I uncheck it there? Used killbox on it twice. Didn't LQFix work on it before? Thanks tons for any suggestions.

If you have pccillin firewall, then you disable the microsoft one. Just wanted to make sure you had one available and on.

Redownload lqfix and install it and run it again. I just looked at it and it should definitely delete this variant. Lets try it again.
jhh3d
Thanks.

The file still shows up on the Startup menu of the system configuration utility, but it's unchecked. Do I need to try to remove it from there?

Hi. Please download and install the program Registry Lite from here:

http://www.resplendence.com/reglite

Once it is installed, please double click on the icon that should now be on your desktop. If an icon is not there, then check under programs portion of the Start Menu.

Once it is opened, copy and paste the below line, into the address field of Registrar Lite.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg

And press enter. You will now be presented with new information in the bottom right and left sections and on the right section.

Right click and delete System service69. It should be gone from msconfig.
jhh3d
It is gone.

Should I enter a check for SpyWareGuard on the startup window of the sys config utility?

Should I uncheck view hidden files now?

Thanks for all your help.

Ok you look good now. Yes you can put the check mark back in for spywareguard and hide hidden files if you wish now.

Now that your clean:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

or

Windows XP System Restore Guide

Renable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

Next,

This process will clean out your Temp files and your Temporary Internet Files. Please do both steps:

Step 1:Delete Temp Files
To clean out your temp files, click on Start and then run, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This should open up the temp directory that your machine uses. Please delete all files that are found there. If you get an error when deleting a file, skip that file and delete all the others. If you had trouble deleting a file, reboot into Safe Mode and follow this step again. You should now be able to delete all the files.

Step 2: Delete Temporary Internet Files
Now I want you to open up Internet Explorer, and click on the Tools menu and then Internet Options. At the General tab, which should be the first tab you are currently on, click on the Delete Files button and put a checkmark in Delete offline content. Then press the OK button. This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes. When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:

Simple and easy ways to keep your computer safe and secure on the Internet
