Ok, the basic problem is my friend deleted an adware program from our PC last night, but it was one of these that has a csrss.exe in it. I assume that when he deleted this it also took out the one in WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 which is, from what I can gather, supposed to be there and is in fact a very important part of Windows. So we now have no csrss.exe on the pc at all. A lot of graphics things do not work, an area where this file is important from what I have read.

So basically my Q is, can I get just this little thing, csrss.exe, from somewhere to return to it's rightful place or will I have to fully reinstall windows? I am running Windows 98se at the mo.

I hope this is clear enough, I am afraid I did not do this myself and always have trouble following what this friend is doing as he moves very fast and doesn't explain what he is doing. I have been looking for info on the web all morning and discovered that this could be the problem, but can't get any further. Thanks in advance for your help, even if the answer is "reinstall", lol.

Thanks Wolfey, I just tried that but it does not seem to have restored csrss.exe. I guess I will have to go through the registry and delete some stuff that I didn't want on there again as well Oh well, them's the breaks and it was worth a try.

Our friend is pretty good with comps, he actually built ours, but everyone makes mistakes sometimes. I generally look stuff up before I do anything, to make sure I don't get it wrong, and follow the instructions step by step, lol, I do worry about making a mistake. I didn't think that restoring registry setting would put a program back on that has been deleted, and it doesn't seem to have...but maybe I am wrong? Can the program run in the registry without actually showing in in the folder it's supposed to be in. Duh, I feel so stupid, but if you don't ask you don't learn, so... At least, I assume it is some kind of little program, as it is a .exe.

Off to the registry.....

If you go hoofing through the registry deleting things you could end up with a pc that won't start so STOP right now.
Why did the Scanreg /restore not work?
Did you point it in the right direction?

It's OK Wolfey, ty, I am removing malware keys that had been left behind when the malware was removed. I have followed the instructions carefully on those things, and double checked everything before I deleted. I am very careful, unlike my friend.

I did exactly as instructed and riffled (carefully) through the registry, and found that various things had been restored, so what you suggested worked as far as it went, however it did not restore the program in question, csrss.exe, which lives in winsys32. Apparently. According to what I have read in several places, it is a program that is supposed to be in windows, but if it is anywhere else it is malware :S All these sites advise caution before deleting this to ensure that it is not the real program. However, they do not suggest what to do if you do manage to delete it.

I will give your suggestion a go, ty, quietman. Also my friend is currently trying to locate the file in his comp and see if he can send it to me via email to replace the lost one.

Ok,
i tried the sfc /scannow thing but it didn't fix the scrss.exe error.
The error still pops up when i start up my computer.

I'm not very good with computer stuff
so please help.

I've also tried the registry mechenic support...
I downloaded the software,
it scanned my com
and found like over 400 stuff that needs to be fixed.
My only option when the software finished scanning my com
was to delete those files.
There was another option to fix instead of deleting it,
but i had to pay for the product.

It is safe for me to use the trial version and delete the problem files
or should i buy the product and see if the problems can be fixed.

I'd rather do it without paying money if possible
if if there are any other options, that's be great...

please help me...

go to Start > Run and type: msconfig
Click "OK" or press "ENTER" and the System Configuration Utility will open.
Go to the Startup Tab, untick the associated startup file and click "OK".

I do not recommend using registry cleaners unless you are familiar in working with the registry and know how to properly edit/back it up. Deleting the wrong entries can disable your system or cause instability.
