there is a lighting bolt symbol going through my battery icon and i cant use it without it plugged in so how do i fix it? its a hp pavilion 1999 lab top

I would imagine the battery has worn out. After using a battery for some time they will no longer take a charge. If you take it to a computer supply store it can be tested. If you know someone with a voltmeter they can test it also.
