Hello,
Still no sound
As I am still hoping that someone might be able to pinpoint what my problem might be, I thought I would try and list the factors in some sort of order.
1) Everything working fine until I installed Logitech software for video chat and AIM to facilitate it.
2) Sound not working, so uninstall Logitech and AIM
3) Still no sound
4) Tried listening to my normal BBC station, no sound
5) Uploaded photos from camera to computer, normal short sound which occurs when connecting and disconnecting to computer not happening
6) Tried decreasing and increasing volume control on keyboard, sound present in both decrease and increase
7) My amateurish conclusions, not speaker malfunction but possibly motherboard or soundboard (whatever they are !)
8) HELP PLEASE

There should be a 4 digit number on the bottom that says what type it is
example: T43 - xxxx
The next time your post doesn't get answered, after a few days, just bump it instead of creating a new one

Still trying!!
When i go to
"Sounds and audio devices properties "
and click on "place volume icon in taskbar"
I get a message which says
"Windows cannot display the volume control icon in the taskbar because the volume control software has not been installed"
Could this be my problem, if so where do I find volume control software and how do I install it.
Thanks again

It's always been a part of the driver download as far as I know
go to the Control Panel>Sound and Audio Devices
Somewhere in there should be a option you can check to
"Show volume control on Taskbar"See if that's checked
Check this out

Followed the link mentioned above and it talks about inserting the XP CD to reinstall the volume software (sndvol32.exe).
Trouble is I haven't got the CD because I bought this machine secondhand with XP already installed.
A friend has sent me his sndvol32.exe file and suggested I save it in the folder where this file is normally kept in the hope it will override the original and possibly correct any problems.
I have done a search for sndvol32.exe in My Computer and no such file exists.
Where and in what folder should I try to save the sndvol32.exe which my friend has sent?
Thanks

Thank you to hamluis.
I have now installed the new volume control software, and placed the icon on my deskbar, BUT, still no sound.
So I have uninstalled and reinstalled SoundMax, installed above (which was missing by the way) but still no sound.
I have been back over volume controls, slider controls, etc etc.
Apart from taking it down the local computer repair shop and probably paying a fortune to see whether they can sort it out, has anybody got any further ideas??

Well, you don't have a lot of alternatives with a laptop.
I suggest waiting until some of the more knowledgeable persons offer suggestions.

What I have noticed with the sound problem is that;
the annoying voice telling me that Avast has been updated is now mute,
but the equally annoying voice informing me that my printer is about to work isn't.
Does that say something about the possible source or reason for my problem?

Hello again, While still trying to solve my 'no sound' problem, I went into Microsoft sound troubleshooting and followed their tick boxes. I ended up with:
"To open Volume Control from the Start, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to Entertainment, and then click Volume Control."
Did as instructed but when I got to Entertainment I only found > 'Windows Media Connect'
I clicked on this, waited two hours, yes 2, and the green dashes were filling up the box, then emptying and starting again, All the time it is saying "starting to connect to Windows media Connect."
Could this have anything to do with my problem?

Reading material,

I had not heard of such until you posted.
I suggest uninstalling it.
