I have win 98,and all I need to do is defrag my computer.I get it started but it won't finish it keeps starting over.It goes to like 2 % and starts over.Any suggestions? a

Can you tell me how to defrag in safe mode?
In safe mode you can defrag, the same as you would in normal mode.
Hi Mom 
1. Switch your PC off
2. Switch it on again
3. As soon as you hear beeping, press the F8 key repeatedly until a menu screen appears
4. Chose "Safe Mode"
5. Once in safe-mode, just defrag as you did in Normal mode.
You may find that it still re-starts a few times. Ignore this and just give it time.
A Tip A Wise Old Turk Once Gave Me:
Replace your Windows 98 defrag.exe (found in C:\Windows) with the defrag.exe from Windows ME. It is a far better and faster build. You will have to do a search on Google for a copy or perhaps do a post here for some kind ME user to email you a copy of their defrag.exe

Run Scandisk, turn off screensaver, check power settings (some people have hard drive/monitor turn off)

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete
Close all on the list except Systray and Explorer(IE must be closed). You might have some other software running. Disable all antivirus software. Turn off screen saver. Try to run Defrag again.
I had this problem until I installed a third party defrag. Norton(Speed Disk). Part of System Works Suite or DiskKeeper. In the beginning, I actually had to run the Windows Defrag in Safe Mode to get it to work. It was OK for a few years and then nothing. That's when I went to a third party Defrag.

Just an additional note, it is common for defrag to restart several times. It sounds like it was working properly, it just needed to run for longer. Defragging can also take hours
I have ME. You could run scan disk first.
Then defrag. (both in safe mode)
This seemed to prevent the continual re-starts during defrag.
