I accidentally deleted my Userinit.exe from my registry thinking it was a virus. Now my computer starts with a "Logon" screen that logs me off at least 3 times, before loading my settings to let me use my computer.
I heard that you can replace Userinit.exe into your registry, but I forgot which registry to input it, where it's supposed to belong.
Is there a way to get it back?
Note: I'm quite sure i deleted it from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ CurrentVersion
Budapest
Jul 6 2009, 06:23 PM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.
In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,
Make sure you include the comma.

I looked in the registry folder, but I can't find "Userinit" anywhere!!
I really don't think I have my installation CD either...

If you do not see it where Budapest said, you may need to create the missing variable in Winlogon and then set the value appropriately - that is, if you deleted the whole variable.
Take a look at your system that works properly if you can. You want to make/add your registry userinit section look like a system that is working.

It's very strange. At some times, I can find Userinit.exe in my registry, like yesterday night. I rewrote the key the way Budapest told me to, and the Logon screen didn't come up (fortunately!)
But now, I can't go into Safe Mode because the Logon screen appears again (even in Safe Mode...) but this time, it just logs me off constantly.
And now, I can't find Userinit.exe in my registry...again....

If you are not deleting it, something is doing it for you - and userinit components are a popular taget for malicious software. There are worse userinit problems to have!
I would suggest you start with these free scanning programs.
Download, install, update and do a full scan with these malware detection programs:
Malwarebytes (MBAM):
http://malwarebytes.org/SUPERAntiSpyware: (SAS):
http://www.superantispyware.com/Of course there are many scanning softwares and opinions available, but this would be a good start.
Not to be scary, but if you do not have a bootable XP installation CD handy, you might try to come up with one in case things deteriorate later and you find yourself needing one. Everyone should really have one anyway.

I will give in the Malwarebytes FULL scan as soon as possible...but right now, my computer's becoming slow..
I just checked my registry, and I found Userinit.exe (mysteriously appeared again) The key data is: "C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,"
When I try to modify the data to match Budapest's, since the data change stopped restarting albeit temporarily, it says: "Cannot edit Userinit: Error reading the value's contents"
I am also aware that a Malwarebytes Quick scan just detected a Rootkit agent in one of my files....

I ran ATF Cleaner, but I couldn't delete my Firefox files (it said it didn't delete anything).
I also ran SUPERAntiSpyware, but I couldn't update it in Safe Mode, because it said something was blocking it. I checked my Firewall, but i couldn't connect with settings because it couldn't connect with ICS. My SUPERAntiSpyware found nothing.
My Internet is VERY fast now! I'm kind of surprised...
Also, I found Userinit again and modified the data as you said! Now my computer doesn't do the Logon process again!
But I'll still be careful!

You won't be able to update SUPERAntiSpyware in Safe Mode as you won't have internet access. You have to update it in Normal Mode, then boot into Safe Mode to run the scan.
If you’re clean, you should create a new Restore Point to prevent possible re-infection from an old one.
Go Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click System Restore. Choose the radio button marked Create a Restore Point on the first screen then click Next. Give the Restore Point a name and then click Create. Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point. Go Start > Run and type: "Cleanmgr" (without the quotes). Click Ok > More Options tab > Clean Up in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.
Also, go Start > Control Panel and double-click Add or Remove Programs. Post back and report any Java entries that you have.

Um...I have a big problem.
Another bug managed to hit my computer again. This time, my computer noted it. I did a quick Malwarebytes scan, but it found nothing. A warning from Windows popped up, and then my computer just restarted. I tried to go back into Safe Mode, but once again, my Userinit was plucked away, so I can't go into Safe Mode.
Right now in Normal Mode, I can't open Malwarebytes or SUPERAntiSpyware. I tried to do System Restore, but the Next button just won't work...

It doesn't appear to work....
I tried numerous reboots to try to open Malwarebytes, but they don't work. Also, a notification always comes up for SUPERAntiSpyware, saying:
"The exception Breakpoint
A breakpoint has been reached
(0x80000003) occurred in the application at location 0x0048a7a3."
Sometimes, when i click it, my computer just reboots
And again, my Userinit just spontaneously pops up at random times

Hello,
Now that you have posted a log here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic240657.html you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.
From this point on
the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean. Please be patient.
