Hi,
I just spent a lot of time on the am I infected forum cleaning up some infections that I had. I am clean now (the person who helped me said so) but in the process of cleaning my computer, I encountered a new problem: no system sound. The person who helped me did not know how to fix this, so he suggested I go to the vista forum to get specialized help.
Here is what has happened:
-I get no system sounds i.e. no startup sounds etc. I manually tried to open the .wav files in the media folder in windows and I got an error saying the file could not be opened.
- I also do not get any sound from onlline video sites like Youtube.
-However, I am able to play songs and other music through media player.
I have done many obvious things to correct this:
-Made sure computer was not on mute
-Installed latest Flash player version
-Tried different browsers (Chrome, IE8 and Firefox)
-Reinstalled my Realtek audio drivers
-Rolledback drivers
But nothing seems to work.
Here is my system information:
- HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop
-Windows Vista Home premium SP2
Can somebody help me?Thanks!

Hello I have a suggestion. Try using a older system restore point, unles you reset them after the malware fix, then there aren't any olg ones..
Next try the Codec repair here.
Fix Windows No System Sound .
Your repair starts here... using a tool built into K-Lite Codec Pack

I tried the codec install method but during the tweaking process, the program encountered Error 5, which means that access was denied for registry key Drivers 32 under currentversion.
When I went to the key itself, I didn't find the wavemapper string value (which some people suggested could also solve the problem) and I tried creating one but it wouldn't let me.I got an error message saying that the key could not be read.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

Did you try the Microsoft fix that I linked or just the third party software thing? MS screws up a lot, but their "fixits" are pretty good and have been known to work occasionally...........
EDIT: You have to use IE7 or 8 for the fixit.

UPDATE: I have my sound back!
It was a very simple fix: Apparently, the malware must have changed the permissions for the registry keys. So I had to go in and give myself full permission for the Drivers32 Key and it worked!
Thanks for the help, everyone.
