I cannot auto update my windows defender. It gives an error code 0x80072efd. If I download the latest updates from the website then they install fine. My windows update is also giving me the same error. I am running 32bit Vista Home Basic SP1. Can someone please help. Thanks.

Thanks. The proxy settings needed to be reset. In case someone else also has the same problem the following steps resolved it for me.

1. Click the "Start" Button, click "All programs", and click "Accessories".
2. Right-click "Command Prompt", and click "Run as administrator". If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3. Type "netsh winhttp reset proxy" (without quotes) at the command prompt, and press Enter.

Try the update again.
