I used a reg cleaner and first niether docs or pics were able to be accesed. Some gray box showed. I made a reg backup and sent to my docs and desktop. I restored the backup in the reg cleaner. Still would not access so i did a system restore for earlier today and now my pics are not in start menu. Docs are but folder empty. So I undid system restore,. Same thing empty folder and my pics folder gone. Folder shows in search ....My Documents.000 8,530 kb. ....I think maybe they are in there. Since other folder is empty. Somehow I moved them.

I hate registry cleaners just for that simple reason...it's not your fault scarlett. Reg cleaners are just creepy applications that often break more than they help.
Go into your Windows Explorer, and poke around a bit. I'm betting that you will find them. The associations just need to be made back to the start menu is all. I'm sure they didn't get erased...you can even use IE to search for them if you want..just go to file, and open file, and then browse from there.
Let me know if you find them, and I will try to help you get the associations back into the start menu.

Just for my clarification... Documents no longer appears on the start menu at all? Or is it just the most recently used documents folder that is empty??
Scarlett
Aug 26 2004, 01:23 PM
My Documents folder shows, but My Pictures folder does not. My Documents folder is empty when opened. The gray box that showed earlier said something to the effect could not be foind ... may have been moved to another location. .... The folder ...My documents.ooo has content . Like I said I may of moved it to there unknowingly It has 8,530 kb while My DOcuments is empty
Scarlett
Aug 26 2004, 01:34 PM

Ok this is wierd.......Now My Pictures folder is under start.......It opens, but is empty........My Documents when opened shows ...My Pictures folder ( Which of course is empty) Just a bit ago My Documents when opened did not have anything in it. And the My Pictures folder under start was gone!

Aug 26 2004, 01:48 PM
It probably just needed a reboot before things caught up. It sounds like all it did was empty the entries out of the recently used column, so they are still there on your system..
Scarlett
Aug 26 2004, 01:57 PM
Yes but My Pics folder is empty
Scarlett
Aug 26 2004, 01:57 PM
And so is My Docs 'cept for the empty My Pictures folder. Huh?
Scarlett
Aug 26 2004, 01:59 PM
And what about that folder..C:\Windows\MyDocuments.000..I did not reboot, should I? How can I move the content from MyDocuments.000 to My Documents? Or am I completly off base?
Scarlett
Aug 26 2004, 02:19 PM
Just did a reboot. Status the same

If you are using windows me, your my documents folder should be in c:\my documents. I believe the My Pictures folder should appear there as well. Move all the documents found in c:\windows\mydocuments.000 into the c:\my documents folder. That should fix the my documents issue.
Now you need to search for the pictures, as they are most likely still on the hard drive, and copy them into the c:\my pictures folder.

MyDocuments.000 wont open correctly. I sent it MyDocuments and it is there in one piece. How can I open a .000 file to view and move contents?
Scarlett
Aug 26 2004, 04:44 PM

Aug 26 2004, 04:50 PM
Hmm...can you remember exactly what it was that you did?
May help us in figuring it out. What reg cleaner..what options etc.
Scarlett
Aug 26 2004, 04:59 PM
.RegSupreme was the cleaner. ....This all happened when I made a backup of the reg from RegEdit. Sent it to my desktop and deleted it . I thought it would be ok. Just a shortcut I thought. I must of sent (My Docs. instead to desktop and deleted it .......What is a .000 file or folder and how can it be opened? None of the choices make any sense. This all happened so fast. It is (was) hard to recall. Sorry. Ive been a pain and I apoligize for that also. This is so very hard for me to explain..........This may be a silly question.. but can the File or whatever be changed to another type? .... And would there be any traces of .dll's or whatever is the backbone of files?
Grinler
Aug 26 2004, 08:57 PM
Well usually when they are in the form of .000 its like its a multipart of a compress file. Like you archived the my documents directory into numerous files.
I will download regsupreme tomorrow and see if I can figure out what it did.

I searched for ..MyDocuments.000 and found 2 of them. Opened both with Wordpad. Which does not respond completly (size is 8.32 mb) Although I did get a look at some of it. Which was RegEdit (backup) I think. It showed reg. keys. If only I could see all of it. I wonder if My Docs. and My Pictures are in there too. Or maybe that is to far fetched. Hmmm... Also in thier properties the archive box is checked. ...Whether that makes a difference or not I do not know.........................Edit: I then opened it with Microsoft Works.

Scarlett,
What is the filename for the second mydocuments?
I think they may be an archive set. Setting up a computer to test regsupreme right now. You are sure that it was regsupreme that caused this and not something else?
Scarlett
Aug 27 2004, 10:20 AM
That is the program I used. But I think that I deleted entire folder ( My Docs. ) That is why Im so curious about MyDocs.000 Why is it called that and not Reg backup? I also have the Reg backup I created in regedit on desktop.
Scarlett
Aug 27 2004, 10:21 AM
They are both named MYDocuments.000 Although one is called C:\ and the other is called C:\MyDocuments. When left clicked in search.

Not really sure what you mean by all that? I just ran regsupreme and it should not have touched my documents at all let alone archive it..
So you have a c:\mydocuments.000 and c:\windows\mydocuements.000 ?
What happens if you rename one to mydocuments.zip and double click on it , does it open?
Are they both the same size?
Scarlett
Aug 27 2004, 10:10 PM
- MyDocuments.000......in folder...c:\.....8,530 kb
- MyDocuments.000.....in folder....c:\MyDocuments....8,530 kb (was c:\windows...I moved it to MyDocs. ok)
- I renamed one to MyDocuments.zip and no it does not open when doubleclicked.
- Have opened it with Microsoft Works and what I viewed was registry keys.
- Did not view the entire file. As it is quite large.
- I placed my Regedit Backup file to My Docs. as Ive done before.
- Then sent it to desktop, for easy access.
- A folder named MyDocuments appeared on Desktop. I deleted it, thinking it was just a shortcut.
- Now I have 2 files named MyDocuments.000 8,530 kb
- Why are they called MyDocuments? When all Ive seen of them so far is a log of my Registery
- MyDocuments folder still exists. But is empty except for the My Pictures folder. Which is empty also.
- Although I also have one of the MyDocuments.000 in place there
O.K. Grinler , I hope this is more clear. Good Gosh my worst fears is that I am not able to explain myself correctly and that Im just confusing you more and more. Thanks for all of your help! Im going away for the weekend and will not be able to respond untill maybe Sunday Night. Have a good weekend!

Do me a favor and when you next see this message open the mydocuments folder with notepad. Then copy and paste a snippet of it into a reply here so i can see what it is.
Also do you know any of the names of your files that may have been in my documents? If so search for them?
Lastly have you looked in the recycle bin? I am concerned that you may have inadvertantly delete the my documents folder (which may also include the my pictures folder) by accident.

As you can see, a Reg. key. There are 4,919 pages when opened in Microsoft Works. Notepad will not open it. I clicked through 1,367 pages, and all I seen was Reg Key listings. Recycle Bin is empty. I must of emptied it. Idiotic I thought it was just a shortcut. Im not sure what all was in My Docs, Ill need to give that some thought.

Yes looks like your registry backup. Have you done a search for files that may have been in there?
Scarlett
Aug 30 2004, 02:55 PM
Yes I think so too. A reg backup. I also have a reg backup on My Desktop. The original one I created through Reg Edit. And I think that the two files ( MyDocuments.000) are one and the same. Somehow it may have gotten doubled. I just noticed that they were last modified at the same excact time. And they are the same size. Opened both and the first page of each is excactly the same.... So somehow I moved My Docs to desktop and then deleted it thinking it was a shortcut..... Put The Reg backup into My Docs and for some reason it is now called MyDocuments.000. .....I have been trying to figure out what all I had in MyDocs. I remembered one and it cant be found. It was a saved file. Not sure about the rest All of My Pics are completly out of this system. Oh well live and learn. ...Two questions (1) Could a system restore bring all of Docs and Pics. back? (2) What about a deleted file restoring program? ....Thank You For All Of Your Help And Patience! P.S. At least I did not delete something real important. This happened on home 'puter.

I created some restore discs last winter. Im sure they are outdated by now. Need to create an up to date version. Once I figure out how I did it. Ill do just that. After what happened, it is probably a good idea.

....Are restore discs the same as backup copies? If not is one better?
Grinler
Sep 15 2004, 10:04 AM
Restore discs are generally cds that you can use to restore your operating system back to its factory defaults.
Backups are just copies of your data onto another medium.

By chance did you try a restore to a few days before the reg cleaner ordeal?
Pick a day in restore when you remember the stuff to be ok and try restoring to that date and time.
Then work from there.

Thanks for the reply. Tried that also. But unfortunately Sys. Restore does not bring back any Docs. It is O.K. you all. I did not lose anthing extremely important. What I miss are some personal photos. But luckily I had moved some of them to My Yahoo Photos. So all was not lost.
