I bought my work PC from surplus and gave it to my FIL to replace his ancient Windows95 machine. He uses AOL and when I tried to install it, we were able to retrieve email but nothing else (i.e. no internet access). Clicking on the Internet button of the AOL panel just 'hangs'.
Attempting to use IE also fails ... it prompts for user name and password which makes me think that maybe it's still trying to use the proxy from our LAN? I renamed the computer and pulled it from the domain [I did this by renaming it in the Network Identification tab and disabling the Network Boot (using F10) on startup -- which may have been a mistake].
Bottom line is: How can I "erase" the proxy/LAN settings and configure it to use an external modem for dial up access? BTW, the modem worked fine to retrieve the email, so I know it is functional.
Also, upon closing AOL the software tried to update and failed.
Here's the specs:
Compaq IPAQ
Windows 2000 Professional
56K external modem (bought new)
AOL version 5 (he didn't have an upgrade CD and his old PC won't run v9)
Any help or advice is much appreciated!
