Microsoft Anti Spyware

i need some advice from the wise ones here,

i now have a 1.4 spybot that has no defs and as a result doesnt know what to look for.

in the begining there was bc's forum "Breaking Virus & Security News". i read TeMerc's "New Release: Spybot Seach & Destroy". i noticed that some problems occured during and after dl. also read Dona's recomendations, and every one elses suggestions as well. so.......

i deleted spybot from my pc by first disabeling tea time & resident. all went well.

then i tried to dl 1.4 using the link in your tutorial. couldnt display that page. so i went to CNET and dl'd from there.

i unchecked update, tea time, and resident during inst. i did do "creat back up".
all went fine. after installing i went to update and a window appeared. "Error Retrieving Update Into File... Socket Error 10061 Connection Refused"

checked NIS firewall log and it showed "spybot, an instance of accessing the internet". it was not blocked.

i think that maybe "Safer-Networking Org" site isnt letting us dl due to some issues with 1.4 maybe it hasnt been pulled from CNET yet?

anyway, one sollution i read was to manualy update. being a newbie i havent figured out how to do that, yet.

some advice would be appriciated.

maybe some one has a 1.3 i could dl? maybe info on a manual dl for defs might work till they fix it?

thank you all at bc for your needed assistance,
igo

UPDATE:
i have since unistalled spybot and dl'd from major geeks. still getting socket error.
cant display any of spybots sites.

Id like one too. I have nothing but trouble since D/L'ing the latest version. It must be BUGGY or something.

Am having a similar/same problem with getting "detection rules" to download after Spybot 1.4 install and cannot access the Spybot website. I uninstalled after a first try and tried some of the methods mentioned -- not selecting update during the install, not using Tea Time, etc. with a second install attempt, but still no cigar! Still receiving a "Socket Error #10060" when I try to update detection rules. Everything looks okay except for the Server Selection button in the Update section reads "No Server Selected" and the drop-down arrow used to select a server in non-functional. Also, think this may be a problem at Spybots end, but since I can't get to that site, not sure.

The site is down. And I am receiving that same exact error.
("Socket Error #10060) is timed out.

CAUTION UPDATE

after recieving advice from bc staff, i have to let you know that this my not be the best thing to do. patients is best.

hi scarlett,

now i have res enabled (icon in tool bar) but 0 items blacklisted.
igonuts2
this is realy getting wierd,

each time i got to advanced mode and click on resident, microsoft antispy pops up a window telling me that a xxx.com site has been denied as a trusted IE site.

i dont want to post a possible hot site, but it appears to be chinese.

what the xxxx?

all scans are clean.

just thought i would put more wood on the fire.

totally miffed,

hi scarlett,

since spybot sites were up i tried another dl and so far its good. suspect mayby they are all good now. havent chk'd elsware.
i dl'd a new 1.4 through bc's tutorial, pg 3 im sure you know were, im the new kid here.

anyway, i dl'd thru Security Related. did the dl per bc tutorial, save one step. i waited till after dl to update.
however i had no socket error when uploading and tea & res are active. did have to uncheck a few items in the inore list

my spywareblaster looks ok. but a lot gets by this guy still.

for this thread, it can be closed

ty for responding. i'll just read you and pandas thread to see how things work out.

i know spybot was, hope still is, one of bc's first line of defence against the plagues out there. you all here dont get a lotta rest around here. dont need more bugs.

ty,

its still bugy.

i now have the same problems you had with the pop up window for "allow" or "deny" change. incomplete and unusable and keeps poppign up.

i remembered what you did and i got out too.

it scans, if i can believe it. just not sure. thats never a good thing.

i'll be readin' you threads. see what you gals and bc come up with.

ty
igo.

Yes, the new version does seem to be buggy. I am getting all sorts of errors with TeaTimer---so often that I have disabled it.

Some items should remain checked.
This is from another board I belong to.

TymeKyller brought this up on another Forum. I thought it was of importance.

The ignore list in spybot contains several entries by default.
They are:

SideStep
New.net
LSP.New.net
MySearch

A responce was asked from Tom Coyotes:

These are specific infestations which it is not safe to remove with spybot, or most
other automatic removal tools. If you have tampered with this list, it is probably
safest to uninstall spybot, remove its folders and clean install and update it.
Of course, if you are clean and you immunize, you should be entirely safe , since
they cannot infect you in the first place.

Newdotnet will break your internet connection if you remove it with something like
spybot. Therefore they put it in the ignore box. Originally it did not do this, so spybot
could safely remove it; but then the nefarious masters at newdotnet decided to
modify it so that if you use spybot or adaware or something like that to remove it ,
it will break your internet access so you cannot go online.
So leave the checks there , the same applies to the other ignore items they have
added.

They have to be removed manually , according to the installers instructions at their
home page, or with special removal tools."

And no, neither spybot nor ad-aware is partnered with any malware foisters. The
problem is that several malware authors responded to the proliferation of automated
removal tools by altering their products in such a manner as to make automated
removal unsafe or extremely difficult.

Most of these are very obvious, for example newdotnet adds an add/remove programs
entry which actually works.

Just a heads up.
igonuts2
thx,

i think your all right. the best thing is to wait till they fix it.
