I've got an XP Home PC that was infected with MS AntiSpyware 2009 (among other things). Malware Bytes would not start on this pc -- in fact, this web site was blocked. I booted UBCDWin v3.22 and ran the SuperAntiSpyware that came with that and it round several species of infectors and removed them. I then rebooted and ran Malware Bytes -- this worked!

However, the Add/Remove Programs applet doesn't populate its list of programs to uninstall. I was trying to uninstall WebRoot's SpySweeper (expired) and McAfee (expired) but only WebRoot furnished an uninstaller. This leaves me stuck with McAfee and it won't uninstall.

Had anyone seen the control panel Add/Remove Programs applet just sit there without populating the list? Have you found a fix?

If mbam won't install

Some types of malware will disable MBAM and other security tools. If MBAM will not install, try renaming it. Right-click on the mbam-setup.exe file and change the .exe extension to .bat, .com, .pif, or .scr and then double-click on it to run.

If after installation, MBAM will not run, open the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware folder in Program Files, right-click on mbam.exe and change the .exe as noted above. Then double-click on it to run.

Thanks Mark. I tried renaming but I didn't think to try extension renaming. I'll file that away for the future. I also noticed that the malware blocked www.bleepingcomputer.com. Maybe it was poisoned DNS or an intercept. I've no way of knowing. I wish I could download MBAM complete on another PC to a flash drive, then install it on a troubled PC without depending on network connections. Is there a way of doing that?

The Add/Remove Programs problem was solved by booting in Safe Mode, then running the applet. It worked properly then. I was then able to do the uninstalls I needed done.
