Lately i have been having virus problems. These are the symptoms:

-unexpected standby
-my computer tries to dial-up while i am on the internet
-system restore says no changes can be made
-windows key acts stuck, but is not physically stuck (when i press "r", run comes up, etc)
-certain ctrl alt delete patterns don't work
-left shift key doesn't work for q, w, e, r, t, y, u, and c.
-right shift key doesn't work for a, i, o, and p.

i reinstalled windows xp pro and reformatted the hard drive, thinking that it would clean the hard drive, but i still have the same virus symptoms. I heard about programs like DBAN that wipe the hard drive, but i don't want to delete the drivers that i need for the graphics card, sound card, etc.

i just want to start over new.

To completely wipe a hard drive (and viruses) you have to do a low-level format. Dban or Active Killdisk will work.
This will, unfortunately, wipe it clean. Meaning you will have to reload drivers
