Great giveaway -- thanks!

My current backup plan is to use CDs and DVDs.

My critical data to backup is photos and videos & video projects.

These products would help me because, in my opinion, backing up to another hard drive is easier, and therefore more likely to happen regularly, than backing up to discs.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
i've always used cds and thumb drives to backup my files but when major reformatting is needed for my pc, i spend a lot of my time transfering my files from that computer to another by using rewritable cds and thumbdrives. sad.gif

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
aside from my music files which i have gathered althroughout these years and family pictures, my AutoCAD files and 3D drawings are the most important data i have on my laptop and i cant afford to lose them cause it would mean doing everything again. that have always been the problem for me since college because my computer had suuper low specs so i've always needed to store my files on some other place instead. and now that i am an interior designer who does most of my work on my computer, i need to always guard my files cause if i lose anything, it might mean losing important measurements, drawings, plans, and most importantly contract documents. i could end up in jail if i fail to submit required work due to lost data sad.gif

How would this prize package help you?
it would be easier for me to store important files without having to buy loads of CDS and making sure they are kept safe. i also have a baby brother at home (he's 3yo) who loves using my computer and it would surely be a disaster if he messes with my important files. also as an interior designer who is ultra dependent on my laptop, i need to keep my client profiles, portfolios, projects, etc always safe and stored for future reference.

I’ve got basically everything that you can imagine scanned or otherwise in native digital format - from tax returns, to x-rays, to entire literature that i’ve written.
Lost a lot of important data on my own fault. Didn’t backup at all and once I was upgrading my PC, forgot to *manually* do things. Lost a lot of college stuff in the process… but this was before the day when people stored everything (photos, video, music) on HDDs and DVDs.
Current backup is synching a 500GB drive that's pretty full as it is...
The Yaz
I have two 200gb usb drives setup as a NAS on my network. One drive is for the mp3 collection and one is for my data files/photos.

I use the Microsoft's backup program to image both drives to 2nd hard drives on two of my desktops.

The 1tb drive would be great since I could make that my master network backup, and the 500gb portable would allow me to take a copy of my files offsite for additional protection.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
None. Attempting to install ubuntu and hooked up some drives....it is not going well.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

Not sure if there would be anything totally lost, pictures ya, music I have on cd.

How would this prize package help you?
It would definitely give me room to backup. And perhaps I'd actually backup.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
Right now I have all of my back ups on CD roms

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
The thing I would miss most would be pictures of my family that I could not get back.

How would this prize package help you?
I would not have to contiue to use countless numbers of CD-Roms for back ups and I could possibly be able to learn to partition drives to futher my education and gain computer skills I don't currently have.

Thank you for this opportunity. clapping.gif

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
I currently use a 250GB FreeAgent that is holding up remarkably well. I back up all of my music and all of my web server files to this drive. It is getting quite full, I have some video and family pictures on it currently but much more of it sits on my un-backed up desktop.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
Definitely my photos and videos. I would be extremely bummed. I've tried to keep a decent backup but, as with most people, I do not do it nearly often enough, and because of my limited space, I have to make decisions on what save and what not to save.

How would this prize package help you?
I would probably put video on the 1TB and photos on the 500GB. I would like to do more video editing in the future and the 1TB would definitely be a great storage solution for that.

My current backup plan consists of USB drives, CDs and DVDs.

Actually, I am just getting started with the process of backing up my data, pictures, documents, family history, and so forth. I have hard copies of these items, so I can not say that it would be devastating.

Knowledge of how to install and use backup systems would be very valuable to me, and I would be able to pass it on.

Thanks.

1.- What is your current backup plan for your computer?
2.- What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
3.- How would this prize package help you?

1) I work with many documents, and to protect the information I need to be copied and taking it to another computer, which I call "Computer security".

2)Most of the programs that are installed on my computer does not have installers, because I lose or forget where they are ... because if my hard drive failed was a big problem in my job for lack of programs that I use every day.

3)would help me in the best possible way, because that would not be carrying my information to another machine, again and again, it could save each of the programs I use and would know where to find them ..., I would make life easier in all the senses!

What is your current backup plan for your computer? I use Time Machine that's connected to a 320 gb freeagent.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? It has to be my music.

How would this prize package help you? This prize would help because it would be like having 2 backups. Aside from winning a 1TB ext HD, you get a 500 GB hd. Twice the storage power!

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

In two words: constantly changing. I always attempt new backup solutions, but haven't found the perfect one yet. I try to upload my important data to an ftp site I host at least monthly. Most of my documents are hosted on google docs. I switched from locally stored Thunderbird to Gmail for my email. And now ALL of my digital pictures are hosted on Flickr.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

Media can always be retrievable, but data that I create is the most cherished. Photos & Genealogy data will be the most devastating to loss.

How would this prize package help you?
This package will finally get me to store daily backup copies to an external drive that I haven't been able to offload into the cloud.

1. What is your current backup plan for your computer?

SyncBack to a 320GB NAS. Separate twice weekly incremental backups for system and data.

2. What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

Pictures of the 4 kids would be irreplaceable. I could handle losing my travel shots (even if I never get back to Praque) and I could one of the kids to re-rip my hundreds for CDs. But I would be devastated to lose the family shots....

3. How would this prize package help you?

Safer backups - scheduled full backups with offsite storage (at my office). Ability to backup more than one machine.
bgedeon
What is your current backup plan for your computer?
Unfortunately, I would not say that it's a cohesive plan. It's burning the occasional DVD and swapping any essential files to another computer.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (pictures, email, music, etc.) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
It would be a combination of all the stored media (music, photos, & videos). I don't have the patience to back everything up to DVD and don't have a large external hard drive to simplify the process. While I have most family photos on CDs there is not single place I could go to restore all the music, photos, or videos.

How would this prize package help you?
I could finally have an external with enough memory space to image the entire hard drive and run incremental backups of new data.

What is your current backup plan for your computer? What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? How would this prize package help you?

I currently do not have a backup plan for my computer, other than burning an occassional DVD. I have all my critical work documents online somewhere, and really don't worry about my email because its all on gmail.

However, my most devastating loss would be my photos and videos. I have, for the past 8 years, not developed one photo. Everything is gigital. There are far too many to use an online service and they just move from Windows install to Windows install, all whilst I pray they survive. As it is, we already lost the first 8 months of baby photos of my son from a hard drive crash which occured 8 months after my last DVD burn

This package would help me by giving me an easily accessible portable location to backup my photos, and other media, where I could share it with my wife and we would have the redundancy we needed to feel comfortable.

Dear BleepingComputer,

"What is your current backup plan for your computer? What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? How would this prize package help you?"

My current method for backup is nothing more than to save critical information to a CD. Very cumbersome and (I fear) incomplete. Needless to say that it is a tedious undertakng altpgether!
The most devastating losses would be in losing my photos and documents. I would also bemoan the loss of a number of programs I have downloaded form the internet over a considerable length of time and trouble to myself.
Winning the Seagate external harddrive would enormously simplify my back up procedure and guarantee a full and complete recovery of all my records and system files. I could live without fear of permenant data loss due to mishaps, viruses, etc.
Thanks for the opportunity to win this contest.

Sincerely,
Cory McKelvey
skullpeddler
My current backup plan I use Optical Media such as DVD's and CD's too burn and Catalogue important information.

The most devastating loss for me would be the different pieces of software i have built up in my collection and of course my music.

An external drive would give me a bit more time before having too upgrade my current HDD's as i'm running out of room on my PC.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
I have a shell script on each computer that creates a gzipped tarball of /etc and /home directories. I then store those tarballs on the home intranet server, and take the latest from each server and copy it to an external hard drive. That external drive also gets a copy of the shared photo repository.

What would be the most devastating loss of data for you?
Pictures and videos of my kids, definitely.

How would this prize package help you?
My existing external drive is old and small (60 GB). I can't trust its longevity, nor can I store as much much data on it as I would like.
mike92615
I have an external hard drive that I use for backup. We shoot Wedding and I backup all photographs on this. I have already had a hard drive crash before I started doing backups and had to go through the cost of recovery. I will not let that happen again

Most devastating lost would be the wedding photos.

The prize would help me because I have almost filled up the external hard drive that I have now.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

I currently back them up to DVD

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

My pictures would be my most devastating loss of data.

How would this prize package help you?

This prize would help me because the data that I back up is getting to large for backing up to DVD and this bundle will give me the space that I need to backup all of my data.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
I have some important files (job related, precious pictures, ect.) saved on a 2GB flash drive (all I can afford ATM) and some CDs burned from FLACs

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
Being a DJ, def. my 100+ GB worth of music. I have many things that I could never replace, in particular quite a few remixes.

How would this prize package help you?
I would be able to store not only my music, but pretty much everything I want/need backed up.
claire1928
no real current backup plan.
pictures are still on camera.
some files are on friends pc or my two jump drives.
emails are in the server of yahoo or gmail.
I would lose some word documents and the hassle of internet connectivity and the cost and time of a rebuild.
what would i do with an external hard drive?
throw a mini party and save lots of stuff on it.
add music, more pictures.
use it for a storage library.
buy another if $$ warrant.

What is your current backup plan for your computer? What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? How would this prize package help you?

I have an external hard drive I use for backups, but it is now too small for all the digital photos. And if I put it in a safe deposit box, then I can't use it to do backups. The photos are too many and too big for using memory sticks. And it would take too many CDs.

The photos are irreplaceable, and some of my relatives have passed away, so it is an important source of family memories.

I really need more drive space, and preferably two drives for my backup with off site storage plan to work right. So I really hope I win. Thanks for offering this great prize.

Sandra Monical
My only backup is on the harddrive itself. The most irreplacable loss would be my original designs for home decorating and craft, the next would be to lose my ebooks having to locate the hardcopies, somewhere in the garage, and rescan them would be very time consuming, tedious and boring. Thank the gods for Baen publishing. Were I to win, i would put my library on both externals, and clean my library out of this shared comp, recovering memory. Then I would back up the rest of my things on the comp and make him beg and acknowledge that sweeping is not stupid.
ptv999
My current backup plan is to transfer some of the most important files (music, photos etc.) to my Archos 5, although it is not enough memory to store as much as I would like. The most devastating loss would be the loss of the music and photos that I cannot fit into my Archos. This prize would help me by helping me preserve all of my files.

1. What is your current backup plan for your computer?
Some sensitive files on flash drive, some pix burned on CD

2. What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
The most???? How can you make me choose amongst 5 years of Quicken data, many poems & stories, and all the pix!!!

3. How would this prize package help you?
Back up regularly, of course. Easily, quickly, one touch instead of pick and choose files.

After reading everyone else's entries, I don't feel quite so ... alone! whistling.gif
I can go to bed tonight less guilty knowing I am in good company!!!

Thanks for hosting this great contest!

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

Not much of one. I have three hard drives in my desktop. One drive is for my OS and programs, one drive is for storage, and I manually copy files to the third drive to "back up".

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

I'm a freelance audio engineer, so if I lost both drives, I would lose YEARS of audio.

How would this prize package help you?

Peace of mind mostly. I like redundancy. It'd also be helpful for moving large files back and forth between my desktop and laptop.
cleo_rose26
What is your current backup plan for your computer? I currently use a combination of CDs, DVDs, and free limited online storage.

Detailed, based on 15 years of bruises.

Monthly:

  • Abridged copy (~30 MB) kept on second internal HDD
  • Ghost of C drive to a dedicated partition on second internal HDD (typ. 70 MB.)
  • CA Antivirus system scan. Typically Nothing.
  • RegCure Registry scan (typically 200 issues)
  • Windows Defender scan. Typically Nothing.
  • Check Instaback, disk cleanup, need for defrag, validity of DOS backup.
  • Take the rest of the day off.
What would be the most devastating loss of data for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

My Doc: Business records, plans, projects, quotes, invoices for my home-based business. That thumbnail drive is my short-term lifesaver.

How would this prize package help you?

Shift almost all fallback resources to direct external and indirect offline storage.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

I know I need a backup plan mellow.gif but honestly I don't have one; maybe Santa will bring me a new external hard drive for christmas (or His little elf will get it and sneak it under the tree). I have tried backups on a couple of web sites but can't afford to pay a monthly fee right now.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

My biggest lost would be all the pictures I have on my computer over the past few years. sad.gif
I have the birth pictures of each of my grandchildren beginning four years ago. Pictures of a new deck my hubby built last summer, picture with Kenna (1st granddaughter) at age 2 sound asleep in her car seat but holding perfectly straight in her hand--her little box of french fries from a very popular fast food place. I would lose the pictures of all my pets that have died over the past few years; lose pictures of every special event that has happened in our lives over the past few years.

How would this prize package help you?

By letting me start a regular backup of my computer; saving my pictures, audio books, and music. My daughter goes to college via online courses; she wouldn't have to worry about her homework suddenly disappearing. It would be safe & backed up.

I know allot of people are entering...would I like to win...you betcha laugh.gif ...will I ...that is up to you. But, I appreciate the opportunity to try to win and that you & the sponsors are offering such a great deal...I mean 1TBharddrive or 500GB...just makes me want to get up and dance the jiggy. dance.gif

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

I use a FreeAgent drive to back up my iBook (but currently running out of space very quickly!); I also use Dropbox to share files (and keep safe) that i need all the time - that works between my iBook and MacBook; I also use Mozy for both iBook & MacBook for some very specific files; my iTouch acts as a backup for my music and photos;

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

All my work files that aren't backed up (not enough space at present to back them up.) And photos/music if my iTouch was stolen! (I've lost irreplaceable photos in the past through theft and a failed backup)

How would this prize package help you?

I would use the 1T drive as a shared drive for shared files within my family (currently we're using a cobbled together unit consisting of as many spare drives as possible crammed into a desktop (still only totally around 400GB) ) and i would use the 500GB Go drive as my personal backup drive.

Q 1. "What is your current backup plan for your computer? "

Ans : Basically there is nothing. Just storing only very important data on CD's and DVD's. That's all. I can't afford to backup all my data

Q 2. "What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?"

Ans : Most devastating will be the loss of my Collection of songs and movies which i had been collecting from various sources. It would be very difficult to collect it again if lost. Also my collection of wallpapers.

Q 3. "How would this prize package help you?"

Ans: It would be very helpfull for me to backup all my songs and movies so that I can be free of the tensions of hard disk failure.

My current backup plan is rather weak, I think. I only back-up pictures and programing code (that I made).
The most devastating loss of data would probably be the amount of tweaks I did to my computer. Most of my -really- important data is backed up.
This prize package would help me give me the space I need to do proper back-ups.

During my last year of college, I lost nearly all of my previous years' worth of work, not totally devastating, but it opened my eyes to how easy it is to lose countless hours of invested time.

I'd give my current equipment to my 13 year old nephew who currently has no computer. New components from the prize would also go to him.

Hi, and thanks for the opportunity to enter this great contest! As of right now, I have no back up plan for my computer. I know this is unwise, but I have no choice really, as I have no means to back up my data. The most important things on my computer are pictures of my family, ancestors who are no longer with us. The loss of these picutes would be devastating as these are the only copies of these photos in existence! To lose them would be to lose the only visual connection my family and I have to our passed on ancestors. Many of these photos were attained through ancestry.com, and are to the best of my knowledge, unattainable again as we do not have any account with ancestry.com anymore. The prize would help me to not only preserve forever my precious photographs, but would enable me to pass these precious mementos on to future generations, ensuring my great grandchildren visual access to their vital past. It would mean the WORLD to me to win this contest, and the prize of a wonderful external storage drive. I cannot afford to purchase one, as I was recently let go from my job of ten years due to the fact that I have to undergo chemotherapy for my liver, and am having trouble just paying bills right now. Again, winning this contest would mean EVERYTHING to me, and to my ancestors, and I am just grateful for the opportunity to enter.
With humble thanks, and my best personal regards,
Corey Arseneault-Miller

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

My main Pc is a laptop with a small harddrive so i currently already save a lot of data on external drives, but you cant really call that backup, because the data is only on the external drive. So except the music, wich is also partly on my MP3-player, i don't really have a backup.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

My photos are taking a lot of space, so i cannot easily back them up if my external drive crashes, i would be devastated.

How would this prize package help you?

I would copy my Pictures, Music, Documents, Systemdrive, simply everything to those drives! thumbup2.gif
