My current backup plan would be to whine and cry if anything bad happened because I have not learned about proper backup strategies.

If my hard drive failed or if everything was deleted, I would lose my way of life. Business, private files, photos...everything.

The prize package would help me by teaching me about having a backup plan.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

I backup my computer as often as I can remember to my NAS. The problem with the NAS is that its no longer very portable, so I need to find a new solution that I can take with me when I am away.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

Pictures for sure. Everything else is irrelevant. I have the pictures from my wedding, the birth of my son (after, not during), his first steps, his first birthday, and many family times between. Those things are irreplaceable.

How would this prize package help you?

This prize would offer me the ability to take my backup solution with me or to an alternate location should a problem arise.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
Well, that would be the occasional DVD burn of photos and videos for the past month or two or three. Definitely not the best strategy but It's all I've got right now.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
Definitely the loss of my digital photos and videos of family.

How would this prize package help you?
I would finally have a viable storage and backup solution to get things off of my main laptop drive, which fills up quickly, and have an immediately available repository of my photos so I don't have to search through DVDs.

OK, you're not going to believe this (hey, I'm a 54 year old), but I still back-up my computer the OLD FASHIONED way (on disc). It is both tedious and expensive, so I'd absolutely LOVE to win these 2 Seagate FreeAgent external hard drives.

I've already had a computer crash & the worst part was losing all of the paswords that I had stored (I told you I'm 54 - my mind is going). It took me about 6 months to figure them all out. I'd go NUTS if this ever happened to me again.

My life would definitely change for the better if I won. I now have a blog and I could store all of the stuff that I plan to write in the future. It's overwhelming to think what all of this storage would mean (Hey, can you throw in a little closet space as well?)

Dear Grinler;
In response to your question, the loss of my pictures and music would be my greatest loss. I currently have a RAID 5 on my computer for back-up and restore. This array holds my complete and incrmental backups of my C drive.

If this array fails, I have no other means of retrieval and would love to have one of the free-agents to store an off-line copy.

Thanks

1. What is your current backup plan for your computer?

I back up my financial data to a diskette about once a month. I occasionally back some things up to a thumb drive, but those are only temporary saves. At least once a year, I burn all my important data onto a CD.

2. What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

Emotionally- my photos and my favorites files. I've spent a lot of time organizing them and have a lot invested in them emotionally.
Practically - all my financial and tax data. It would be impossible to recreate all the tax data for myself and my clients over the years, not to mention trying to file a return without all my financial data.

3. How would this prize package help you?

It would be a lot more convenient to back up my data and therefore, I would back it up more often. I'd be less at risk of losing my data and I'd have a sharp new gadget to enjoy.
MiVetters

Current backup plans include backing all data up to another internal drive daily, and an occasional image saved to that drive.
Most devastating loss would be loss of extensive family history data with over 1000 ancestors traced and the photo database associated with many of them including my immediate family.
This package would allow me to maintain another more accessible set of backups with more frequency of imaging due to its size.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
I try to upload some of my "important stuff to use everyday" as many times a week I can with the last version to never lose a lot of work. Then I have an external HDD where I usually deposit things I don't use anymore (pics, and so). I burn some dvd's from time to time, but I hate it.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
All my pictures would be... I don't know, the worsest thing it could happen to me. Years of my life in .JPG! And well, I hate losing my music too.

How would this prize package help you?
I could have an external HDD just to real backup my stuff. The other HDD is just 160GB and its already very full... and I use it for moving documents from here to there.
bryan6376
I would be devastated if my computer crashed and I lost everything. Currently, I use RhinoBack to back up my computer items online. Unfortunately, I'm currently adding massive amounts of music to my computer, which takes a while to upload to an online site.

If I were to lose everything, I'd be at such a loss, I wouldn't even know where to begin. First off, I use a varied set of customized programs (Foobar highly, personally altered) etc, and if all those changes were lost.....Secondly, I have thousands of personal pictures on my computer, most of which exist no where else. Lastly, I have a massive library of FLAC files copied from original cds (to preserve quality). The combination of those three items, all lost, would be terrible.

I'm in college, and if I were able to afford a large-capacity hard drive, I would have done it a long time ago. However, at this time in life, I can't. By winning this contest, it would enable me to back up my entire computer to a single drive, which would be a huge weight off of my chest. Also, I travel often from home to school and this would give me an easy way to carry my data back and forth.

Thanks for hosting this contest!!!

What is your current backup plan for your computer? What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? How would this prize package help you?

My Current backup plans is not all that it could be that is for sure. It is a 16 Gigabyte Flash drive. It contains vital documents, Pictures, and some source code for school projects that I have been working on. Not to mention numerous reports that myself and my wife have wrote. So how would this prize help me. I could get rid of a 16 Gig Flashdrive and start saving more important things as well such as a Development Database and some of ISO's of some programs I got through Dreamspark.
madjay
My most devastating loss of data would be my college work and my family photos.
Currently I backup data every week on dvds.
The current prize package would provide a reliable (and of course free!!!) data storage which is more accessible and reliable

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
For sensitive files (bank statements, things with SSNs, etc) I do periodic backups to an old external drive and then later back up the external drive to DVD/CDs. I load the rest to the cloud and rely on the cloud server's encryption and redundancy. In a sense, pictures are my most valuable irreplaceable data. I haven't found a cloud location I'm satisfied with and have duplicated pictures many times in CD backups that I'm not sure anymore which CDs can be trashed and which may have unique content. Definitely room for improvement.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
Pictures. Pretty much everything else can be replaced or recreated.

How would this prize package help you?
I'd have a nice beast that could hold many generations of backups and also be able to store offsite. Family pictures, memories of vacations, and all of those random pictures that make life rich can rest safely for my kids and the rest of the family.
varriola

Current backup plan - disk copy
Most devastating data lost - emails
Use of prize - more backup space

Hello,
I have a simple home network of 2 old windows XP desktops an 5 yearold laptop. My backup is copy of files between the desktops. But I am running out of space fast.

My Daughter is a photographer and losing her pictures would be the most difficult.

THis prize pack would help me have a place just for her pictures and she would not have to worry about swaping in all her cds she the files on now. Also this would free up space for my family to install new programs they are wanting.

Merry Christmas!

What is your current backup plan for your computer? I use CD's and flash drives... No too good I guess??

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? My pictures

How would this prize package help you? I would be able to back up all my data and have more room for other things.

Like some others, I don't have much of a plan, other than the misguided belief that nothing bad will ever happen. I do back up photos on to CD and I might have a recovery disk somewhere, but......

I would jump off something high if I lost pictures that weren't backed up. the e-mail contact list would hurt too.

Having the prize would give me the motivation to start doing things properly.

I am very greatful for all the help here I've received in the past. It's a service I wish I never had to use but I'm glad you're here when I need you.

Merry Christmas

Hi and thanks for this contest.

Nothing at the moment, I had drive image XML but when I needed it last week it failed. Had to reformat and start installation from scratch. Same for Paragon some time ago.
For the moment I use only system restore and erunt. Have an internal HD laying in the locker with a complete system from last summer.
Most devastating would be the loss of pictures and personal documents, however most them I have on a USB-stick.
This prize packet will help me with ease to have allways recent backups of my two internal drives. And also very pleasant would be I have no budget yet to buy them myself.
Regards,

Gerard

Thank you for this opportunity. My current backup plan is to hook my laptop up to an 80 gig external drive and use Microsoft sync toy to backup my laptop. The most devastating loss of data would definitely be my pictures because my wife and I have taken gigs worth of pictures of our 5 month old son that could never be replaced. This package would allow me to keep a complete current backup of my system because the 80 gig drive is getting old and running out of space. Thanks for the contest.

I run a full backup every night which uploads all my important files onto a network of servers and an external hard drive. I also use a CD for any code work that I do so that they are more permantly saved.

no... I am not paranoid!!! *looks around*

CODE!!! I write a lot of code and I make a lot of programs. If I lost any of that I am not sure what I would do. Code is my life and if I lost ANY of it I would be devastated.

Well the external hard drive that I have been using is very old now, and it is starting to wear down. So I was actually looking around for a new one. With the prize package it is a good way to back up information.

My current back up plan is nothing really i remove my pictures onto cd's about every 9 months to a year. I have all my music on my iPod too, so I guess that is kind of a plan. But nothing for anything else.

If I lost all my pictures I would be sick to my stomache. wacko.gif I don't think my music would be a problem because I think it's safe on my iPod.

This prize would help me be alot more organized, no more cds. Plus The kids cracked one of my picture cd's, sad.gif GONE!! It will free up space on my computer it's kind of old and slow! Plus it's free! More money for Christmas presents.

I hope you all have a nice Christmas and Thank you for all your time and energy you put into this site! bowdown.gif

What is your current backup plan for your computer? What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? How would this prize package help you?

My backup plan is quite the makeshift. Most of my media (music, movies, anime) is on an external drive, but, there is only one of that, so if this drive goes away, then that's gone. My primary data (documents, school work) is on my laptop hard drive. After each semester, I would archive that semester's content and put it on the external, but again, there's only one copy of it. I say I should do something about it, but I haven't yet. I've started to poke around with Amazon S3, but I'm not sure how I will implement that into my backup plan yet.

Upon hard drive failure, music, movies, anime, this is all replaceable. But the documents would be the problem, since these are things that I created, so I can't just make it again. This prize package would give me so much more storage space. My laptop hard drive is just 30gb, so I can comfortably back up the entire hard drive and then do incremental backups each week to keep safe.

Thanks for hosting this contest!

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
I don't have a backup hard drive so I burn important stuff to CDs/DVDs

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
Definately digital photos and videos

How would this prize package help you?
It would give me an easy way to keep all my important files, photos, and movies safe. My wife and I have taken a ton of photos or our 18 month old daughter (way too many to print them all out) and this would give us a place to store them all.
theghoul
What is your current backup plan for your computer?
Right now I have two Westen Digital USB external drives that I back up to. The main problem is that they're pretty slow.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
The worst loss would be all of the digital pictures that I've taken of my son as he's grown up (he's five). That's the only reason I back up at all.

How would this prize package help you?
It would make it easier to back up my pictures, because it would be faster. That plus I'd be a lot more comfortable than with my current drives.
cbrooks302
What is your current backup plan for your computer?
Just bought an external drive to put important files onto.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
It is upsetting to lose expensive programs, ie, my son just lost "live 6" when his hard drive crashed.
He never regestered it and lost the installation disk and key. But of course with some money, it can be replaced. The more devastating loss is losing all the family photos which cannot be replaced as my daughter did last month when the hard drive died in her old computer. Living over a thousand miles away for the last five years, I don't have copies of the photos to send her.

How would this prize package help you?
I would use the larger one to not only back up my computer, but also back up all my family's computers. The second would go to my younger daughter, who is currently going through a seperation. I am trying to put together a nice system for her for Christmas.
Thank you for the contest.

Hi,
New to this site - what luck!

OK, to "business":
What is your current backup plan for your computer?
Somewhat fractured after two of my 500GB drives gave out in the last weeks; I had been backing up one desktop WinXP system's sole drive to another's two external 500GB drives, along with the second one's own internal data, using Retrospect. My Mac 10.5 is currently neglected. I definitely have to rethink things, leaning towards using TimeMachine for the Mac, treating it separately from the two WinXP desktops.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
Code, and technical docs I've written or are very hard to come by. Losing close to 1TB of .flac files would be pretty darn painful as well.

How would this prize package help you?
It would be a start to what I need to rebuild, and establish (a cleaner network setup).

Thanks SO much for hosting this contest.

Regards,
Dave

My current backup plan is I backup to DVDs. Not as often as I should though.

I would be most devastated is I lost my photos, videos, and music.

This prize package would help because it has so much storage space and it's easier to backup to than DVD so I would do it regularly.

This is such a great prize, thank you for the giveaway.
Yoon Fui
My current backup plan is, when I remember, compress important files and burn them to CD.

The most devastating loss would be photos of the new baby of the family. Irreplaceable.

The prize would help me to have a real-time backup of my important data.
sdwalker
Currently backups are placed onto multiple external hard drives.
My DVD and small music collections would probably be the worst to lose only because of the time they would take to put back.
1.5TB worth of drives would be useful to duplicate data among.

What is your current backup plan for your computer? What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? How would this prize package help you?

I currently back up my documents and other important files on my external harddrive, usb, and on google docs account for word docs. In the past, I have also stored things such as photos on cds, but that takes a lot of time and preparation.

I would be devastated if I lose my pictures and my collection of music. Ever since purchasing a digital camera, my family and I have not really printed any pictures (mainly because we see how ugly they are beforehand and are reluctant to print out those magnified pimples and blemishes), but, seriously, we do not really have the time and money to do much with them except look at them once in a while on the computer. We need to take time to print the ones we love. With that said, we have lost a whole collection of photos before. It was our first family digital camera and dad's first laptop. The laptop suddenly crashed after the trip, and we had not backed up the data. Fortunately, we also brought a camera that used eh, regular film, so we had some pictures and memories of the trip. That was a sad day in the household.

The collection of music contains all my favorites when I was a wee little second grade till now. It also contains some of my mom's favorites, which I find amusing at times. smile.gif

With an external hard drive, I could easy sync a folder (or will learn), such as my pictures folder, to the drive so they would be safe if any thing happens to my computer. I would also be nice to carry important files that would not fit in my usb around in a separate location for backup. smile.gif

Thanks for the opportunity. Peace.

My back up plan?
I know I should have one, but I don't. I'm pretty much self taught with what I do know that I haven't taught myself anything about back ups. I have 1 old laptop I store photos on of my kids and such, and one that's a couple years old use for browsing etc.
My biggest lose?
Photos of my family that have already passed on. Photos of my kids. I guess I've kind of took it for granted that the photos would always be there.
Would it help me?
No doubt, that's such a cool idea.

Peace

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
I have a small 160 GB Seagate External Harddrive that i occasionally back up files to, about every 3 months or so. I tend to backup my photos, music and movies first, and then take a selection of my other files. I do not have enough space to continually backup all of my files through auto-backup spoftware, otherwise i would.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
In 2004, my family went on a "Cross Country" trip around the United States (23 states in 33 days!). We took approximately 2500 to 3000 photos, and we printed off most of the good ones, but I know they won't last. I have an old Dell Dimension desktop that I made a copy on, and another on the 160 external. However, I fear losing the files on the Dell, as it is getting old, and then the only copy I would have is the external. On my laptop, which has 80 GB, I backed up part of it, but unfortunately, when I booted it up one day, it wouldn't go into windows, and I had to write an essay for the next day, and so I had to do a full restore, losing all of my files (luckily only old school documents), because I didn't have time to try to recover it.

How would this prize package help you?
This prize would help me immensly. I would take a copy of the files, and send it to my dads' house, where I could have an off-site backup, and then have a solid backup plan, using auto-backups. I also love the Seagate harddrives, they've always been reliable, so I know it would hold strong. I also listen to many podcasts, which rack up during the school year, and I would get to listen to them all during the summer, so I don't have to re-download them.

Thank you BleepingComputer!
frenchbob
My current backup plan is to back up personal documents such as photos of our young son (currently 15 months) to a second computer on a regular basis. These are obviously irreplaceable and would cause both myself and my wife considerable distress if we lost them. On a more practical basis I have many free (legal) programs from giveawayoftheday.com and I would either have to wait for them to be re-offered or even if I considered them really essential now - buy.

With the reliability of a Seagate drive I know that even if I did suffer a complete unit failure (both computers are now a few years old) at least I would be able to recover our photos (most important) and hopefully restore my operating system.

Thank you

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

I've backedup some of the information on DVD's and DVD DL.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

All unique files that only I have, like personal photos that aren't uploaded to some online photo gallery, personal work files and some very rare downloaded programs...

How would this prize package help you?

Oh, I shall use it for instant backup of my entire 320GB Seagate hard drive that I have now. whistling.gif

What is your current backup plan for your computer?
I don't have a backup plan, sometimes on cd which is always unreliable.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
The most devastating loss of data would be my work, all the graphic and website i have designed and developed.

How would this prize package help you?
I would be relaxed and not worry of my data as i do now.

1. What is your current backup plan for your computer?

I maintain 3 home computers, and currently make manual incremental back-ups of pics, and docs by sorting files by date, zipping them and storing them on a web server. The pics are also burned to a CD periodically. I'm confident I have copies of important files stored *somewhere*, the problem is finding them if anything goes awry.

2. What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

My youngest daughter is visually impaired, and her computer has special screen reading software and applications to enable her to use it efficiently. Unfortunately her computer is the oldest of the 3. A data or program loss on her machine would be devastating, in that the down time involved to reinstall and retore all of her files would be substantial.

3. How would this prize package help you?

I'm moderately competant technically, and realize there are better ways to archive information. Unfortunately I don't have the time or money to remedy the situation at present. Receiving 2 external drives would help bring me into the 21st century, and save me a substantial amount of time!

I would love to win these Seagate FreeAgent external hard drives. Because of my financial situation I do not have a backup and if I were to lose my music I would be totally devastated. I have not had an extra penny to buy anything extra and this year is even worse than last. If I were to win I would back up my music and my childrens photos. Also my son is autistic and his computer is his world (literally) and he also does not have backup for his extensive gaming & photo collection. He would be absolutely frantic in the case of a loss. Some things are backed up on dvd but not much and where are they? Winning these would be awesome!!

Thanks

1. Current backup is just burning to cd-See why I need to win this contest?
2. I would be devastated to lose family pics and my music files. My parents recently passed on and my brother has the hard copy of family pics, I only have scans.
3. This would help me so I don't have to try to replace all those mentioned in #2.
jooksing
My current backup plan for your computer is to image my data on cds every now and then. how ever I am getting to a point of having too many cds each image session and too many old images to sift through. The most devastating loss of data would be the pictures, while music can be shared among friends and document are usually forgotten, Pictures are hard to recreate. This prize package help you by allowing me to back up a set daily and the other I would backup everything one in a while and put in a static bag and placed into a safe deposit box.
Sfrick
I had a great plan until my back up drive died and left me dead in the water. It sure would be nice to bring home a new friend to pick up the pieces.
ThisSportingLife
My current backup plan is this:
Firstly, a prayer to merciful Minerva that nothing will ever go wrong with my laptop and that it will never get stolen or damaged, despite the amount of travelling I do.
Secondly, if anything should ever go wrong, God forbid, I would check that all my music and photos are still on A-drive, where I deposited them for free several months ago and then completely forgot about. I would, of course, lose anything added to my laptop since I uploaded them, but there you go.
Thirdly, I would root out the DVDs to which I copied the same music and photos, just in case. I'm pretty sure I backed them up properly...Once again, anything added in the past half year would be lost.

So, I think I have most of the things that I would hate to lose backed up, even if it is in a rather half-arsed fashion. Whether I still have the registration numbers for various software I'm running, I couldn't say for sure. Either way, it would be annoying to have to search out and download the relevant software that it has taken me a while to put together from various free offers. (I wonder where those registration numbers are?)

If I had a genuinely safe backup I would, for the first time in my life, do a Dell System Restore. I think I have accumulated so much trash over the years, both in the registry and everywhere else, that the thought of having my laptop back to its pristine condition is really very attractive. This time I would know how to look after it from the get-go, not like when I first got it. Until now I have never dared try a system restore, just in case something goes horribly wrong, A-Drive goes bust on the same day and my backup DVDs turn out to contain only error messages.

More than anything, having an external drive big enough to take not only a copy of the contents of my own laptop, but also perhaps a copy of my mum's and girlfriend's computers as well, would make me feel less nervous about my amateurish attempts to make either of them load in less than 20 minutes on startup.
uzziah0
At work I have some space on the network, and put some things up there, especially things I'm actively working on. I also have a folder on my laptop "Volatile" that I put all my working stuff into. When that folder has about 600MB of stuff in it, I create a folder in it _CD0% (with increasing numbers) move everything into that folder, and then burn it to CD. I keep the folder on my laptop, but have the CD just incase (I've needed it a few times when my laptop crashed and needed to be reimaged).

At home, I don't have a very formal back up plan.

I have family pictures in folders for the year, and when there are a lot for the year I create folders for quarters.
I burn these to CD periodically.
I also have some of these on-line, but not all of my pictures fit in one of the free on-line storage places.

My Pictures would be the biggest loss, but I have all of these backed up. With the latest on my computer and on-line.
The older ones are on my computer and only on CD.

I have some home video, but all of that is on the original tapes.
I'd like to have enough HD space to rip the 15 table I have onto my PC, and then I'd be able to cut those and make movies (in my free time).

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

I currently have installed ShadowProtect on my laptop. I backup my entire machine every Sunday to an external USB drive. I need to do the same thing for my desktop but need to buy another copy of ShadowProtect and another hard drive to handle it.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (i.e. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

I have several years worth of photos of my wife's and my families that were converted (copied using a scanner) as well as all of my digital photos. The loss of those would be devastating because the quality of the original photos have deteriorated over time and may be at the point where they can no longer be scanned. As the "techie" member of my family, it has fallen on me to preserve these memories. All of these photos along with my music, document archive, and much more are located on the unprotected desktop system.

How would this prize package help you?

I am thinking that it would not only enable me to preserve the photos, but make them available to other family members over a web site devoted to family pictures. With that much storage, I could have a backup as well as the means to partition the web server copy of the photos I want to share with the rest of the family.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
Pictures, definitely. All of my famuly's digital pictures are stored in a box onthe pc but only occasionally dumped
to outside storage. Also personal doc and txt files for my job hunting and my wifes work.

How would this prize package help you?
I would like to try a better way to automate backups of important data/files/pics/etc.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

I currently backup at random to SD card and USB flash drives only things that I think of backing up. I feel ashamed.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

Losing my photos of my children from the last almost six years would be a gutting experience. Music loss wouldn't make me best pleased either, but memories aren't as easy to recover.

How would this prize package help you?

I could easily backup everything on my computers, and keep them somewhere safe rather than scattered around the house and office.

I back up my files onto SD cards with a reader. My computer drive sounds like it snores sometimes, which makes me think I'm gonna lose important documents soon, including all my family, friend and pet photos.
This prize would help me get all the stuff I can't get onto SD cards as a backup. Good Luck to everyone!
