A picture is worth a thousand words. wink.gif

I'd also like to mention Golf. It is not one of the choices. But it runs right along side my choice of Football. Since it is one I could participate in myself. Being outdoors, is not something that I get to do often. When I do I love every minute of it!
Leurgy
I bought a mountain bike about a year ago and now I can't get enough of it (sure did miss it over the winter). Love to ride all the great trails around here. A great chance to get off the beaten track and enjoy nature. Watched the spring Trout run and enjoyed that very much. My first time out this spring I came home covered in mud and it was great!!!

Personally i don't play sports don't even watch them on TV but i do/did like playing Badminton in Highschool

I don't generally have much interest in sports but being in The Big East.. we all catch a bit of the fever in Basketball season. LOL

cold.gif cold.gif Well for 10 years I was a Football (Soccer for the USA Cousins) coach/ manager in a Junior Club. Teaching basic skills and team play to 6 year olds. I am (maybe still am??) President of the club after 5 years as Chairman and 10 as a Board Member. Eventually we had 27 full league teams and 350 plus kids from 4 to 18. I ended my time as Manager for the Under 17's. The club was great for the City but it became almost a full time job.cold.gif

So Guess what my favourite sport is????

thumbup.gif thumbup.gif CRICKET thumbup.gif thumbup.gif

. Played everything else almost and its still the one game that Frightens and excites me
frankie12
I like Football, hockey, baseball, basketball. But i picked football mainly becuase i watch it the most, also because I help coach the varsity football team at our school.
Scarlett
It seems that baseball is winning over my fav. football.

Lol Since it is springtime. And baseball is in full swing now. No pun intended. I feel that it has an unfair advantage. whistling.gif

'Cmon everyone, let's keep the ball rolling. grinner.gif

Edit: BTW Both paras and Grinler have posted, but have left no comments.

I'm sure we all would like to hear your thoughts as well. crazy.gif
frankie12
Nevr mind... i was going to say that grinler did post. I thought scarlet meant that he voted and never votted but its the other way around.
Scarlett
Yes but I am curious what his favorite is. He really does not say. smile.gif

Ill guess hockey, since he lives in Canada. As for Grinler...hmmm.. my guess is football.
deerslayer
Well right now (as scarlet said) Being spring, i like Baseball. Ask me again in the fall and i'd say football. lol In the winter it's Basketball! So i'm well rounded. lol But i'll go anytime to play golf. And being the southern boy that i am, I'd go watch a Nascar Race anytime!! thumbup.gif

Personally I like Baseball better. smile.gif

This reminds me, has anyone heard George Carlin's "Baseball vs. Football" ?

QUOTE(http://www.baseball-almanac.com/humor7.shtml)
Baseball is different from any other sport, very different. For instance, in most sports you score points or goals; in baseball you score runs. In most sports the ball, or object, is put in play by the offensive team; in baseball the defensive team puts the ball in play, and only the defense is allowed to touch the ball. In fact, in baseball if an offensive player touches the ball intentionally, he's out; sometimes unintentionally, he's out.

Also: in football, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and all sports played with a ball, you score with the ball and in baseball the ball prevents you from scoring.

In most sports the team is run by a coach; in baseball the team is run by a manager. And only in baseball does the manager or coach wear the same clothing the players do. If you'd ever seen John Madden in his Oakland Raiders uniform, you'd know the reason for this custom.

Now, I've mentioned football. Baseball & football are the two most popular spectator sports in this country. And as such, it seems they ought to be able to tell us something about ourselves and our values.

I enjoy comparing baseball and football:

Baseball is a nineteenth-century pastoral game.
Football is a twentieth-century technological struggle.

Baseball is played on a diamond, in a park. The baseball park!
Football is played on a gridiron, in a stadium, sometimes called Soldier Field or War Memorial Stadium.

Baseball begins in the spring, the season of new life.
Football begins in the fall, when everything's dying.

In football you wear a helmet.
In baseball you wear a cap.

Football is concerned with downs - what down is it?
Baseball is concerned with ups - who's up?

In football you receive a penalty.
In baseball you make an error.

In football the specialist comes in to kick.
In baseball the specialist comes in to relieve somebody.

Football has hitting, clipping, spearing, piling on, personal fouls, late hitting and unnecessary roughness.
Baseball has the sacrifice.

Football is played in any kind of weather: rain, snow, sleet, hail, fog...
In baseball, if it rains, we don't go out to play.

Baseball has the seventh inning stretch.
Football has the two minute warning.

Baseball has no time limit: we don't know when it's gonna end - might have extra innings.
Football is rigidly timed, and it will end even if we've got to go to sudden death.

In baseball, during the game, in the stands, there's kind of a picnic feeling; emotions may run high or low, but there's not too much unpleasantness.
In football, during the game in the stands, you can be sure that at least twenty-seven times you're capable of taking the life of a fellow human being.

And finally, the objectives of the two games are completely different:

In football the object is for the quarterback, also known as the field general, to be on target with his aerial assault, riddling the defense by hitting his receivers with deadly accuracy in spite of the blitz, even if he has to use shotgun. With short bullet passes and long bombs, he marches his troops into enemy territory, balancing this aerial assault with a sustained ground attack that punches holes in the forward wall of the enemy's defensive line.

In baseball the object is to go home! And to be safe! - I hope I'll be safe at home!

by the way in cricket also the ball prvnets u from scoring.... i think george carlin had it wrong a lil bit

looks like baseball is up on the boards leading...tennis and hockey havent even hit the scorboard yet thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif

personally i dont like hockey... but a lot of ppl in canada and usa do..... i think itz beacuse of the nhl lock out but u kno the world series are still on...
frankie12
very cool article about baseball vs. football. I like both of the sports bye the way. thumbup.gif I also like Hockey but THERE IS NO HOCKEY. The players and the owners should make there decision fast because i miss hockey.
paras
i dont think that hockey nhl will start up agina... will it...maybe next season
Leurgy
No hockey this season, thats for sure. They would be down to the quarter finals in the playoffs by now if there was. Hopefully they will get it together for the fall. I think that they are going to find they will lose a lot of fans though, just like what happened to baseball after that lockout. They also need to bring the ticket prices down so someone can take their kids to a game without blowing a mortgage payment on it. mad.gif

My favourite spectator sport will always be Nascar. Can't get enough of those stock car races!!!!
joe53
There was a time when this Canuck would have voted 'Hockey' without a second thought. Especially after Henderson's famous goal in the 72 Soviet series. That was then- before the current NHL strike.

But I also grew up in a border town, and lived and died with the Detroit Tigers.
(Sadly, they have moth-balled Tiger Stadium, where I spent many a happy day.)
And I was lucky enough to be at the game that Joe Carter hit the home run that won the World Series for the home town Blue Jays in '93.

So baseball it is.

Ken Burns said it best (to paraphrase):
"History will record that America made but two great unique cultural contributions to mankind- Jazz...and Baseball."

To which I say- Amen!

BASEBALL...The beloved game of the Americans. Based on a children's game and Originally called "ROUNDERS", played by British children at School in leagues for under 11's. After that only played at Senior School by Girls. NO ONE is allowed to wear Gloves just to catch a little ball, or any other protection. whistling.gif

SOFTBALL.... Close to the original Rounders, but uses a HUGE SOFT BALL.

So Americas Gift of Jazz and Baseball is fundamentally flawed. What Americas gift really is, is HOW TO HAVE FUN AT A SPORTS EVENT clapping.gif . Now that is the way to do it thumbup.gif

RULES OF CRICKET hysterical.gif

Each side has eleven players. The side that is "IN" goes out, apart from two Batsmen who are then considered "IN", and the side that is "OUT" goes "OUT" (onto the Cricket Pitch). The side that is "OUT" tries to get the players who are "IN" "OUT". When a Player who is "In" is given "OUT" he has to come "IN". Then the next player from the team who is "IN" goes "OUT" and is considered "IN" until he is "OUT". When the team who are "OUT" get 10 players from The team who are "IN" OUT, then they change places. The OUT team becomes the IN team, and all but two of their players go out, until it is their turn to be "IN". When the team who have been "IN" and then are all "OUT", gets the team who were OUT, but then were "IN" ALL OUT the game finishes, unless its a Test Match when they have Two INNINGS Each. So its really about being IN and OUT, IN and OUT. Trying to stay IN and NOT get OUT, or being OUT and trying to get the Other Team OUT. Simple REALLY crazy.gif :
Oh the speed of the 5.25oz Cricket Ball, which is a seamed hard ball like a baseball
is approximately 95+ MPH (160 KPH). It is bowled at the ground, causing wide variances in break, bounce and direction. The Bowler is running at full speed if he wants when the ball is bowled. The batsman has approx .2 of a second to decide whats happening, and then react. SCARY STUFF at the even medium level.
Having played Cricket with Canadians and Americans their general opinion was censored2.gif ONLY Mad Dogs and Englishmen, go out in the Mid Day Sun........ONLY MAD People Play Cricket hysterical.gif hysterical.gif

seker-hemat_An Egyptian Bat and Ball Game

QUOTE
Several ball games were played by the Vikings, the rules of most of which have been lost over the ages. The balls for these games were made of wood or leather, and no, the players didn't wear horned helmets for protection. The best known of these games was Knatteleik, which seems to have been a variant of baseball, since the players were divided into two teams and one player had to hit a hard ball with a bat. Notably different are that it was played from dawn until dusk, tournaments could last for weeks, teams could consist of as few as two players, and physical contact was encouraged (players were actually allowed to fight over possession of the ball). There are also rumors of a game in which a player was to bat a ball at the other players, hoping to connect with a Norseman that wasn't quick enough.

QUOTE
From: Ball, Bat, and Bishop: The Origin of Ball Games by: Robert W. Henderson -

Henderson repeatedly argues that ball games hold a common origin in ancient Egyptian fertility rites, and maintain links to such rites throughout most of their spread and development.  Originally representing the conflict between the gods Horus and Set, and between the dying winter and coming spring, Egyptian fertility rites involved teams in mock combat over the Òhead of Horus.Ó  Eventually, puppet heads and later, crude forms of balls, replaced the human heads initially used in the ritual.  This and similar rites diffused throughout ancient societies of North Africa and the Middle East, following the cycle of seasons and being adapted to local conditions and needs.  From there, ball games spread with Islamic invaders in the Middle Ages, from Spain to France and beyond.  By the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, several ball games were widely popular throughout Europe.  Some, such as tennis, which for some time was only played inside monasteries, owe their popularity to religious institutions.  Other games remained tied to seasonal rites.  Modern secularized sports like baseball and cricket developed from these earlier forms of popular ball games.

I love World Cup Soccer, Football, and Hockey.
I was thrilled when Ft. Worth got its TMS (Texas Motor Speedway) but forget about seeing any races. I think they are sold out until the next millennium, lol. Racing is in my family (drag, motorcycle, dirt bike) and I'll never forget driving to Indy and Chicago from my hometown in NW Indiana. I'll always remember Steve Moorehead. Gotta share this story!

It was 1982-1983 I believe. My dad took us to Chicago to see the races. Since we grew up going to races as far back as we could remember, we knew them all by name. Steve Moorehead was my favorite! Scott Parker (#2) was my sister's favorite.

Anyway, we were still sitting in the stands long after the race was over and most of those in attendance had already gone. Being kids, we went down by the fence (back and forth) to see whatever action remained hoping for the chance to see Steve. I finally gave up and sat down a bit closer to my parents who were chatting with my uncle and aunt who came with us. I never noticed anyone behind us.

Suddenly, these 2 guys behind us, about 12 ft away, asked if we enjoyed the race. Giddy, I went on and on about the results and standings throughout the race. He asked if I had a favorite. I said with much enthusiasm, "Yes, Steve Moorehead!"
He smiled and asked 'you think he's great huh?" "The best!" I said.

The two guys kept smiling and looking at each other. Then it finally hit me! OMG! IT WAS STEVE MOOREHEAD I WAS TALKING TO! What a thrill!!

You hear about this stuff all the time in the movies (commercials, like that one with the little kid at the Hotel meeting Jeff Gordan or whoever that NASCAR driver was.)

But for someone from our very own board to have met STEVE MOOREHEAD is an honor. (I've never heard of him, but he sounds famous smile.gif )

OMG I so missed your stories ~67~ What a great day for you. You gotta tell me, did you get his autograph?

When I was young. I went to a Cardinals ball game with my Dad. And was able to meet a few of the players. They autographed my scorecard. Lol I do not remember who they were. And it is hard to read them. But I still have the scorecard. w00t.gif

For a minute there you sounded like my history teacher going over the 50's (Korean War).

My history teacher was born in 1949 (really old, lol) and now that we are going over the Korean War and the 50's and all the new "technologies" they got "back then," he keeps getting all exciting and stuff.

But this also reminds me of how my class today reminisces about the "good old shows," like Doug, Rocko's Modern Life, Ren and Stimpy, etc... lol So I can see that happening to me some day. smile.gif lol

Also this reminds of that movie "October Sky," where the main character got to meat his idol von Braun, and didn't even realize it.
