I have a couple of issues with my laptop
1. there is a file in my printer spool that will not delete and it is holding up other print jobs I need to get done .... what the heck do I do now.
2. my system (especially when online) seems to have slowed right down to the point that the network will time out... this is new.. just the past couple of days.... aggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh
Would the fact that my physical memory is just about full......... something i have just noticed.

Help Help Help I'm in the process of writing 2 major papers and I'm ready to trash this whole thing.

Thanks

Have you tried saving your work and then rebooting your system? (not hibernate or sleep, but the actual "Shutdown" or "Restart" option)

If this still happens after a reboot, is the effect immediate - or does it take a while to slow down?

Have you scanned for viruses or malware using an independent, online scanner (in case something has gotten by your protection)?
Here's a free one: http://housecall65.trendmicro.com/

I will give the online scanner a try. I have been rebooting, and it really doesn't seem to matter. I think I might just have a virus, whatever is going on is affecting how fast my system is running, plus the network will time its self out becau8se things are taking so long.
Thanks

hi,,, how much cpu is being used,,, look in task manager,,, and while your there look for the printer in there and end task of that process,,, i have seen sometimes when there is problems with the printer spool, it starts to use up all the resorces of the pc and slow downs happen,,,,, run full scans first though as John says, just to be sure, then look in the task manager ,,,etc,,, if the scans come up clean.
good luck.

ps how much ram do you have ???

okay looking at task manger i have 77 processes running, 7% cpu usage, 75% physical memory
894 mb ram amd turion 64x2 tl-60 2.00ghz
i am currently running housecall 6.5
will let you know what happens

hi,,, running vista with all the bells and trumpets needs about 2gb of ram,,, also you have 77 processes running with to little ram,,, this will cause slow downs and apps to take longer to load,,,, think about installing more ram aand stopping some of the stuff running on the pc to free up ram and cpu,,,, if you have a large flash drive,,, say 2gb then plug it into a usb and use the ready boost,,, this will help and show you what a bit more ram will do if installed,,
1/ type in to vista start menu search box,,,, msconfig,,,, then select it, when the window opens, click on start up and look at all the programs that are set to start on boot of the pc,,, you will not need most of these,,, i have 5,,, mostly security,,, always keep your security on startup,,, the others ,, if you dont need it to start on boot then uncheck them,,,
2/ shut down some of the services you dont need,,,, this is where you need advice on what to disable,,, here is a link to a site that will guide you through this,,,
http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm
have a read and decide if you want to do this one,,, dont forget if you make a balls of it you can go back and change it back or just do a post restore back to how your pc was using system restore,,,
when using this,,,, site you need to open services to make these changes,,,, type in to the start menu search box,,,, services.msc,,, and press enter.
this will free up some needed resorces,,, you could also turn off things like vista aero,,, but you will lose all the good looking stuff on vista,,, so a ram up grade would be better.
good luck.
