Hello pjr10 smile.gif Welcome to the BC HijackThis Log and Analysis forum. I apologize for the delay however we are all volunteers and it gets very busy around here. I will be assisting you from here on out.

I ask that you refrain from running tools other than those we suggest to you while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Please perform the following:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:
      Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

When completed please both both logs fromRSIT as well as the one from Kaspersky.

Thanks,

Again, sorry for the delay, but let's now do the following:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
  • Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Regardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware. MBAM may make changes to your registry as part of its disinfection routine. If you're using other security programs that detect registry changes, they may alert you after scanning with MBAM. Please permit the program to allow the changes.

We are not seeing anything in any of the scans or in the logs showing infections. The file which you asked me about is a legit file and should not be a cause of any problem.

I am not sure exactly what the people at Avast told you but it may be you have a glitch within the program itself. The next thing we can suggest is an uninstall of the current version of Avast and then a new install to see if this will correct the problem.

You also do not show evidence of a firewall on your system which if of upmost importance so what I am going to do is give you the link to both a new install of Avast along with some other free antivirus programs if you would rather try another one. Also links to free firewalls.

For a free anti-virus please follow these instructions:

Click on this link: AVG
  • Underneath AVG Anti-Virus Free click on Download
  • Click on AVG 8.0 Free for Windows
  • Click on Download
  • A window will open. Click on Save File-A window will open. Click on Next
  • Click on Accept
  • Make sure standard install is checked and click Next
  • You can enter your name and click Next
  • click Finish After install is complete click OK
  • Follow prompters to update and check for viruses
Some more links to free anti-virus programs(Note. Choose only one)

Avira

Avast

A firewall is also of the utmost importance in preventing your system from being hacked.
Click for more information on: Understanding and Using Firewalls

Here are some good programs that are also free:

Sunbelt-Kerio

Online Armore Free Edition

Comodo

Note: Use only one!

Please let me know of your decision and if anything has improved on the machine.

Thank you for your help. It seamed odd thsat Avast was protecting me but I still got virus alerts. My security center says Firewall On. Also conrol panel firewall on. I will try a fresh install of IE 7 plus Outlook Express and Avast. Thank you again it certianly has been an interesting process.

You're welcome and I hope the problem gets worked out. In reference to the firewall issue for some reason the RSIT log was not showing your firewall enabled and that is why I posted what I did. Something else to keep in mind is that the Window's internal firewall only offers one-way protection whereas the ones I linked to offer the added bonus of two-way protection. Of course the option is always up to the user and what we do is suggestive in nature only.

If there is nothing else we can do to help you I wish you the best in the future and thank you for using the BC Forums. smile.gif

I have reinstalled Avast and IE 7 still getting the same error message with attachments.
Ran Malware a quick Scan and Full Scan. It picked up a lot of stuff. I thought some of these might create other files. Any thoughts on this.

I am sorry I posted the same thing two or three times. I didn’t realize that there were two pages to look at.

No problem about the posts, it's easy to do. smile.gif

Let's try a different type scan and see what it shows. I would like you to do this twice:

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible. Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

Please download DrWeb-CureIt and save it to your desktop. DO NOT perform a scan yet.

Reboot your computer in "Safe Mode" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

Scan with Dr.Web CureIt as follows:
  • Double-click on launch.exe to start the program.
  • Cancel any prompts to download the latest CureIt version and click Start.
  • At the prompt to "Start scan now", click Ok. Allow the setup.exe/driver to load if asked by any of your security programs.
  • The Express scan will automatically begin.
(This is a short scan of files currently running in memory, boot sectors, and targeted folders).
  • If an infected object is found, you will be prompted to move anything that cannot be cured. Click Yes to All.
  • When complete, click Select All, then choose Cure > Move incurable.
(This will move any detected files to the C:\Documents and Settings\userprofile\DoctorWeb\Quarantine folder if they can't be cured)
  • Now put a check next to Complete scan to scan all local disks and removable media.
  • In the top menu, click Settings > Change settings, and UNcheck "Heuristic analysis" under the "Scanning" tab, then click Ok.
  • Back at the main window, click the green arrow "Start Scanning" button on the right under the Dr.Web logo.
  • When the scan is complete, a message will be displayed at the bottom indicating if any viruses were found.
  • Click "Yes to all" if asked to cure or move the file(s) and select "Move incurable".
  • In the top menu, click file and choose save report list.
  • Save the DrWeb.csv report to your desktop.
  • Exit Dr.Web Cureit when done.
  • Important! Reboot your computer because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
  • After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web in your next reply. (You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report)

I have two hard drives. It got thru the first without a problem CPU 100% half way thru thru the second. It was as good as froze. It moved two files that have been on my computer for years. Part of a Flight Sim I use. Will try to run the second disk later if that is possible. after moving files still had the same problem. Will have to take security off of the file in Safe Mode can't access it from here.

pjr10
Unable to scan second drive run out of memory. Cant access the log access denied. Security problem from safe mode. Don't know what else to do.

When you check your processes in Task Manager are there ones other than the browser which are showing large amounts of memory usage?
pjr10
IEexplorer, explorer, ashserv, svchost,MsMpeng, one touch. These are in normal boot up. In safe I disabled MSMpENG to get more memory but it started up right before my eyes again and started to grab memory. I am trying to post the original cureit log it is a word document. It is not working like 9000 pages. Sorry about that. Any other options beside redoing every thing. Are we sure it is not a setting in Avast or Outlook express. Should I try Outlook???
thewall
Are you now using Windows Defender because that is what MsMpeng resolves to? This has been known to use a lot of memory.
pjr10
Yes should I remove it??? I doesn't pick up anything anyway.

It might be worth a try. Here is one link to where they talk about it's usage and I'll give you another to one of our forums that deal specifically with it. Since it is using such a large amount of CPU it could make things better.

Edit: Additionally if it is working in real time and I believe it does it and the Avast could be interfering with each other. Not necessarily so, but always a possibility.

A couple of things:

Did I understand you correctly that you did take Windows Defender off of your system, and if you did was there any noticeable improvement in the amount of CPU usage?

What kind of scans did you run?
pjr10
I ran an Avast Boot, windows defender, Windows Live Care. Every thing is negative. I am begining to wonder if Avast warning is a false positive. The files I am tring to send are clean. I think maybe we shjould try another Free Anti Virus software and see where it gets us. I can always go back to Avast. I have used it a while and this is the first issue I have had with it. What are your thoughts.
thewall
I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Avast because it is one we recommend. However different programs interact differently with various machines. I use AVG8 and so far I like it a lot. Like you said you can always go back and it sure wouldn't hurt to try a different one.

Here's some links:

Click on this link: AVG
  • Underneath AVG Anti-Virus Free click on Download
  • Click on AVG 8.0 Free for Windows
  • Click on Download
  • A window will open. Click on Save File-A window will open. Click on Next
  • Click on Accept
  • Make sure standard install is checked and click Next
  • You can enter your name and click Next
  • click Finish After install is complete click OK
  • Follow prompters to update and check for viruses

Another thought. I have up loaded a screen shot of my mail folders. It might be possible that a message that I saved had a virus. I am thinking that if I back up and remove the extra folders and then check. I guess i can always restore it back. What do you think? I will try this first.
pjr10
Well the mail thing didn't work. Will try AVG next. Noticed that the mail folders are in a couple of different spots. Unloaded tried then reloaded same message.

Ok here’s what happened. I changed to Outlook as the default mail program. I now can send attachments. Once again thank you for all your work and time spent. clapping.gif

We're glad we were able to help you. thumbup2.gif Below are some things which can help keep you avoid infections in the future.

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints, you need to be registered to post as unfortunately we were hit with too many spam posting to allow guest posting to continue just find your country room and register your complaint.
The infections you had were

Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection
You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented
    • Turn System Restore off
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
    Restart
    • Turn System Restore on
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis
  1. Make sure you install all the security updates for Windows, Internet explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch for it to that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC, so keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC
Go here to check for & install updates to Microsoft applications
Note: The update process uses activex, so you will need to use internet explorer for it, and allow the activex control that it wants to install
  2. Keep your non-Microsoft applications updated as well
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities, to check for other vulnerable programs running on your PC that are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month
  3. Make Internet Explorer more secure
    Click Start > Run
    Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    Click on the Security tab
Click Reset all zones to default level
Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  4. Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
While the firewall built into Windows XP is adequate to protect you from incoming attacks, it will not be much help in alerting you to programs already on your PC attempting to connect to remote servers
I therefore strongly recommend that you install one of the following free firewalls: Comodo Firewall or Zonealarm
See Bleepingcomputer's excellent tutorial to help using and understanding a firewall here
Note: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well
  5. Install SpywareBlaster & make sure to update it regularly
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious activex controls from installing themselves on your computer.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster from here
  6. Make use of the HOSTS file included with Spybot Search & Destroy
Every version of windows includes a hosts file as part of them. A hosts file is a bit like a phone book, it points to the actual numeric address (i.e. the IP address) from the human friendly name of a website. This feature can be used to block malicious websites
Spybot Search & Destroy has a good HOSTS file built in, to enable the HOSTS file in Spybot Search & Destroy
    • Run Spybot Search & Destroy
    • Click on Mode, and then place a tick next to Advanced mode
    • Click Yes
    • In the left hand pane of Spybot Search & Destroy, click on Tools, and then on Hosts File
    • Click on Add Spybot-S&D hosts list
Note: On some PCs, having a custom HOSTS file installed can cause a significant slowdown. Following these instructions should resolve the issue
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type services.msc & click OK
    • In the list, find the service called DNS Client & double click on it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click OK & then close the Services window
For a more detailed explanation of the HOSTS file, click here
  7. Install a-squared Free & update and scan with it regularly
a-squared free is a product from Emsi Software provided free for private use that can detect and remove a variety of malicious software. You can get it here
Note: If you have a dialup internet connection, you may also like to install a-squared Anti-Dialer which provides some real time protection against premium rate dialers
  8. Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is absolutely essential to keep all of your security programs up to date

Thanks,
