I am running Fedora 8 on two computers.

Under System Monitor > Resources > CPU History on one computer the CPU usage varies from about 10% to 100% - this seems reasonable. On the other computer the CPU History shows it running at very close to 100% all the time. The computer doesn't seem slow when I use it.

No processes are running except gnome-system-monitor on both computers.

Any suggestions as to why this is so?

The system would not run if other processes were not.
Open a terminal window and type: top
This will show the processes and what resources they are using.

I did top on both computers - on one it shows pcscd using about 90% of CPU and on the other computer pcscd uses about 2 or 3%. There is nothing particularly different between the two machines.

man pcscd says it is a Smart Card daemon - what is it there for.

Daemons are like services in Windows and if you don't need them, they get shut off, disallowed, uninstalled. If you don't need this functionality it's best to remove the program. If it's a depends for another program then someone will have to tell you how to disable this daemon in FC.
