On Saturday night my system drive decided to kill itself.
So I had to replace it with a brand spankin new HD. I went to look for my XP disc but it turns out I let someone borrow it and they lost it
So now, I have Windows ME on my computer.

So since I have to learn to live with it (until I can afford a disc because no one I know seems to have one...) I am going to learn about it.

Here are my questions:

Is ME compatible with .NET framework? If so, what versions.

Does ME have System Restore?

What is a good site to learn about ME (for free; suggest wikipedia and I'll put a bullet in my brain, it didn't tell me much)?

What is a good site to find the freeware I usually use (but in old versions that will be ME compatible)

How many service packs are there for ME? If theres more than one can't I just download 1? (Dial up internet + downloading service packs= ANNOYING)

How do I find out what sound card I have in the computer without having to open it up? (So I can download the drivers)

I can answer at least one of the questions. Yes, ME does have System Restore.
I think there were TWO Service packs for ME.

Perhaps another glance at the Wikipedia article would be worthwhile, it answers at least two of your questions.

WinME was a short-lived OS, and was fairly quickly superseded by XP. If I recall correctly, there were rumours of a Service Pack being developed, but an official one was not released. I believe someone may have rolled up the updates into an unofficial service pack though.

This might be a way to get all your Windows ME updates. I believe the site will still work. They stopped providing current updates for XP about 2 years ago, but I was just there a week or so ago to check it out for someone else, and it still scanned my XP computer. Naturally it reported that it had no new updates for me. But it did tell me what I already had.

It is a site that offered an alternative way to get the Microsoft updates and patches for non-IE users, and for people who had older unsupported systems like 98-Me and could no longer get updates from Microsoft. Early on, people got some false positives with their antivirus programs, until the antivirus vendors corrected that. It is perfectly safe to use.

You will have to install Firefox or another browser and install the Windiz plugin. But you can uninstall all that after getting your system updated.

The information doesn't say it still supports 98-Me, but it does.

If memory serves, Windiz will also leave a copy of all your updates in a folder on your C drive. (You might have to choose download them to install later. I can't remember.) Then you can save that folder to a backup CD so you'll always have them. They can be installed manually, if necessary, anytime you might need to reinstall Me before you get XP.

Oh, and I just thought of this. One of the first things you need to do on Windows Me is install the patch that fixes system restore. You can download it here.

Now I need help with something else. I own a HP Pocket Media Drive (80GB External) and need a driver for ME.
For some strange reason I have a feeling the drive isn't compatible with me and if it isn't I'm going to be really off!
It has all my music and photos and if I can't get them theres a chance I'll go postal and kill everyone in my house.

When I purchased the drive it came with a driver but I had to format the drive (the driver was in a folder on the drive. stupid idea in my opinion.

This isn't a hardware issue (hence, why I just made it a part of this thread).
The drive cost me $100. I'm not going to be happy if its gotta just sit around on my desk since it isn't compatible with ME.

Unfortunatley I was unable to locate the driver on the site. I am going to keep looking though.
I checked the HP Website and they only had the Vista drivers for it. Which I think is RIDICULOUS.

I tried plugging in the drive and looking in device manager. Its detected but theres a question mark next to it. Then I opened up everst to see if it was recognized in there. It was BUT there was no link or anything to download the driver. It does have a product information link which I will check out.

Don't know if this will help. I couldn't find anything for drivers
or the HP software that was on the drive.

The article didn't help but for some reason it made me realize whats wrong.
The drive is formatted to NTFS which isn't supported by ME.
So I have formatted it to FAT32.
Works with my XP computer but I have to wait until tomorrow night to see if it works on my ME computer.

You must have lost all your music and photos when formatting from NTFS to FAT32!

No, I didn't loose it I backed up before formatting.
