Hey everyone, I have a fantom drive on windows xp. The drive is firewire, and I have two wires, one for the external drive and one for my digital camcorder which I frequently use. Anyhow a week ago I plugged my camera in and as usual when I do this the external drive disappears, only problem is this time when I unplugged the camera the drive didn't come back.

So my problem now is when I plug the external drive in it is detected and windows starts to autoplay it but when I try to click on it or cancel the autoplay it simply disappears and says that the drive isn't available.

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

Try going into Disk Management and see if it is there, without a drive letter.

Right click My Computer, Left Click Manage.

Open Disk Management and see if the drive is listed. If it is, it may not have a drive letter. You should be able to right click it and assign it a drive letter.

I hope this helps.

I can't think of any reason an external drive might disappear when something is added to the system...unless it's a port/motherboard problem.

But that's just an uneducated SWAG smile.gif.

I have a similar problem with my external Hard Drive. The Manager says it recognizes the HD as E but when I try to read it, nothing happens.
This problem began after I ran a registry fixer called RegCure.
Can anyone give me some diagnostic suggestions?

To john witmer:

Please...start your own post/thread. This will make it much easier for everyone to understand and follow.

It appears that your issues are not similar to those of the original poster.

Thanks.
