Hi,

One day I launched Internet Explorer 7 and it went into this weird spastic action. Suddenly, the screen turned white and various toolbars were flashing rapidly, I could barely make out the address bar, then the Start Menu started moving from top to bottom. The computer seemed like it was having a seizure. I tried bringing up the task manager via CTRL-ALT-DEL to end Internet Explorer, but nothing came up. Then I heard that dreaded 'pung' sound, which repeats itself and starts and stops eratically. I couldn't do anything to stop the seizure, so I just shut off my computer manually by holding down the power button.

When I turned the computer back on, everything was back to normal. Yet, I'm suspicious of a virus, so I tried backing up my important documents on my flash drive. Yet every time I drag and drop or try to copy and paste to the drive, I get a message saying, "The directory or file could not be created." By the way, this problem started happening before the seizure. So, I tried backing my files up on a Rewritable CD. But when I clicked, "Write files to CD", then it brings up another error message saying that it could not copy files to CD and gives a list of options as to why (CD is defective, not enough space on CD, etc.) But the CD is fine, as I have other files already written to CD and it still has plenty of space left.

So, right now, I'm running a full Norton virus scan to see if it can detect anything. After that, I will run a Webroot SpySweeper scan. That's all the anti-virus programs I have. But if these programs don't detect anything, what should I do? I'm willing to go through a manual removal if that's what I must do.

I have an HP running Windows XP SP2.

Please help me!

Thank you very much!

Hi, please follow with this....
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you may be asked to reboot your computer so it can proceed with the disinfection process. Reagardless if prompted to restart the computer or not, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

When I launced Internet Explorer the computer didn't go into a seizure this time and it ran normally.
But, I'm still having the same problem with my files. I cannot copy and backup my documents to my flash drive and am getting the same error message.

Also, just out of curiosity, should I delete all the items in the Mbam quarantine? (I already removed the selected items but they are still there in the quarantine).

So what should I do now about my files?
Shmutz
It turns out that my flash drive root directory was full. Yet I can't explain the CD problem, but at least I know that it isn't a virus. Yet I was very surprised to find those bugs on my system when Norton and Spy Sweeper detected nothing.

I hope that Internet Explorer doesn't have another seizure!

Anyway, thanks for your help with that!

You're welcome and glad that it's good now.
You should ask the CD question in the Internel hardware forum. Someone there may have further insite. Good luck.
