Full Version: Suspected Trojan At Work
BleepingComputer.com > Security > Am I infected? What do I do?

ShinOstia
I own a HP Pavilion.
This all really started earlier this evening when my computer suddenly changed it's background to "You computer is infected with a virus" (Or something along those lines). I instantly ran Webroot Spy Sweeper and found a Trojan Virus on it (Troj/FakAlert-A), I did this in Safe Mode to be safe and deleted the file. But of course my computer is still picking it up when I run it. But now my computers doing some weird stuff. First off, when I reseted it ran a disk check and did something (text scrolled too fast to read) then it reset again and I get to my log in stuff. From this I enter my account and then it (occasionally) brings me to an 'error' screen about something but if I hit the windows button i can get back to my desktop and there's a program called 'Blank' and it goes away if I close it. I'm still finding this Trojan on my computer so I'm curious about if the disk check and the error screens I've gotten are related to this Trojan. Can anybody help?

1. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
  • On the Scanner tab:
    • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
  • Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

2. Do part 1 of 2 of S!Ri's SmitfraudFix
Please download SmitfraudFix

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

QUOTE(ShinOstia @ Jul 6 2008, 02:08 AM) *
Yes, well this has been a problem for only today but I won't risk it by waiting.

from your HJT topic here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic156113.html

The fact is ShinOstia, you are much more likely to get help sooner in this forum. There are folks in the HJT forum that have had to wait up to a month for a reply because of the huge backlog. Please send me a PM if you wish to continue the disinfection process here and I will reopen this topic.

Otherwise, because you you have the above referenced log posted, you should NOT make further changes to your computer (install/uninstall programs, use special fix tools, delete files, edit the registry, etc) unless advised by a HJT Team member, nor should you continue to ask for help elsewhere. Doing so can result in system changes which may not show in the log you already posted. Further, any modifications you make on your own may cause confusion for the helper assisting you and could complicate the malware removal process which would extend the time it takes to clean your computer.

From this point on the HJT Team should be the only members that you take advice from, until they have verified your log as clean.

Please be patient. It may take a while to get a response because the HJT Team members are EXTREMELY busy working logs posted before yours. They are volunteers who will help you out as soon as possible. Once you have made your post and are waiting, please DO NOT make another reply until it has been responded to by a member of the HJT Team. Generally the staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond.

If after 5 days you still have received no response, then post a link to your HJT log in the thread titled "Haven't Had A Reply In Five Days?".

To avoid confusion, I am closing this topic. Good luck with your log.

Hi,

Please restart your computer, and make a new logfile with MBAM. Post that logfile in your next reply. smile.gif
Do you still have problems?
ShinOstia
Everything seems fine and I haven't gotten any of those 'error' windows or 'Blank' screens. However whenever I start up my computer I get "rhc9m8j0e301.exe encountered a problem and needs to close" and AVG picks up a potentially unwanted program 'WinFixer.ATW'. Are these at all related to my Trojan?

Results:

Hi,

Update your AVG, and scan your computer. Restart the computer.
After the restart scan with MBAM, do a full scan.

Post the log of MBAM in your next reply, and tell me if there are still problems. smile.gif
ShinOstia
Everything seems to be good on my computer however I think it is still being picked up by AVG sad.gif

What does AVG find exactly?
Can you give the file-paths too?
ShinOstia
Thank you again for all of your help so far. I think AVG removed it from my computer already because I haven't been given any warnings since last night. It was finding 5 or 6 places of WinFixer.ATW I believe. I'll check a little bit more into it.
superbird
Wait a couple of days (2/3 days), and tell me how your computer is behaving then. wink.gif
ShinOstia
All right, thank you for all your help smile.gif
superbird
You're welcome.
I'll see your next reply in a coule of days then. smile.gif
