I'm wondering what the average salary is for web designing. I'm doing a course in it now and am thinking of it as a career oppertunity working from home as I'm unable to work at the moment. I'm still a newbie, but I would like some guidence to what to expect when I start work and how the pay rate will increase once I get more experienced. Is this possible someone could helo me out with this? I've heard the pay is quite good, but I would like to know a little more before I go into this.

I don't know what 'average' is, nor do I think the term 'average' is really meaningful.. I charge anywhere from $25 to $45 an hour for converting/updating websites, and anywhere from $200 - $5000 for creating websites from scratch. The higher dollar end comes from working with websites created using PHP, ASP, Coldfusion, JPSs, etc. The lower end is for straight HTML (which hardly anybody uses anymore). At any rate, what the average income for me is not likely to be an average for anyone else once I factor in my experience, location, and customer satisfaction.

The local community college here cranks out "web designers" at an
average of 20 students about every 6 weeks. Here's a pay scale i found.
* Web Designer salary: $40,234
* Webmaster salary: $43,990
* Web Designer & Developer salary: $45,000
* Senior Web Developer salary: $75,000
* Senior Software Engineer: $90,800
* Software Architect: $102,000

Like groovicus said, skills in PHP, ASP, Java will put you
more in demand.

So I guess it would be a good idea to learn more skills. I've heard of different ways to code webpages, but never looked into them much, though XHTML sounds interesting. What to you think would be a good addition to learn that wouldn't be too much more difficult than HTML?

XHTML is simply HTML that conforms to XML standards.

I don't know of anybody that would consider XHTML to be an enhanced skill. What I meant when I said that hardly anybody uses straight HTML anymore is that people do dynamic page generation in favor of static pages. The other languages, such as Java, C++, PHP, etc. are ways of creating dynamic web pages.
