It tells me that my computer is infected and I need to download free-virusscan it then opens up a window in firefox. I cant seem to find any advice as to what to look for in the registry that I can remove. If anybody has an idea I would be greateful

What program is it?

Some manufacturers are unscrupulous and will have you download their free scan for their product, and in the download they will install something that their scan will find, but you have to purchase their product to eliminate it.

Try running scans with these utilities.

I was trying to apply a patch to a version of Act 2008. I suspect that it was infected I scanned it withMcAffee it showed nothing. I have tried everything to get rid of it but to no avail. IE 7 is unusable and when I click no on the warning screen it opens a new page on firefox. Windows explorer has the same problem making it impossible to open and use files. FixIEDef hasnt worked either. I have also tried online scanning but most of them only work through IE7 so, I am stuck between a rock and a hard place here. Any further suggestions apart from a ritual burning in the back yard and a sincere death threat to the writer of the original virus hysterical.gif
