Billy O'Neal
Hello.

I am looking to start saving for a gaming machine that I don't anticipate being able to afford for over a year. However, I am a person who likes to set goals smile.gif

What would a typical price on a good gaming system be?

AMD or Intel
1 or 2 video cards
32 or 64 bit
and of course memory 2, 4, 6, or 8gigs

I just spent a grand on a AMD system. I would budget $1500 if possible. It's always nice to have some left over

That's going to depend on who's winning about a year from now. I would assume Intel, but god knows what AMD's planning in thier SkunkWorks.

I am targeting 8 gigs, but keep in mind this is a year from now, meaning that 8 will likely be the price of 4 now. Possibly even more. One of the biggest things I plan to do with this system is VMWare, so RAM is crucial (no pun intended)

Hello all!

Does US $2,500 sound realistic?

I would think so

Yeah, I agree. Even if you go to someplace like Cyberpower you can configure a nice one. If you build it yourself it could even be cheaper... blink.gif

OMG that would tear through anything thrown its way.

Not crysis on high on a 30" monitor....

$10,854.00 for a Dell? If you're going to spend that kind of cash, go for a high-class boutique builder. I just got a new PC from Maingear. My F131 works wonderfully. $2500 will get you a reasonable PC. Not much will run Crysis on a large monitor with a good framerate. I suggest getting a Dual or Quad core system and seeing if the builder will overclock it for free (a la Maingear). Then, go for the most memory you can afford. A dual SLI or Crossfire video card setup (at least a 9800GTX or better) along with Vista 64. This will get you a good PC. I priced a PC with this setup (Quad core Intel, 8 GB of RAM, Vista 64, GeForce 9800GTX SLI) at around $2,700.

That must be one ridiculously fast, and expensive, PC. Can Crysis run with an average 30 fps in all areas on their PC?

I dont know...he hasnt told me much about it, im sure he has that gfx card..

I think my system might be what you're looking for...

I spent about 1500 on mine, these are the specs:

Phenom 9600 2.4Ghz Quadcore (Black Edition so OC'ing is good)
Powercolor ATI Radeon HD 3870 512MB PCS
500GB WD Caviar HDD
4GB Mushkin DDR2
GA-MA790FX-DS5 mobo
A new keyboard & mouse (generic)
22" Acer LCD (Max res. = 1680x1050)

I personally go with ATI/AMD because they offer pretty much 99% of the performance of an Intel/Nvidia loadout (Take a nice look at the new 4870 over the GT280, see the performance/price lowdown thumbup2.gif )
at approximately half to three-quarters the cost.
I haven't gotten Crysis yet, but it can run Age of Conan on all max settings at like 40 FPS....and I haven't OC'ed it yet. My suggestion for a completely banging computer is to get 1.) Triple-channel memory 2.) The absolute newest Phenom or AMD CPU 3.) Run the new 4870 (when they come out with X2) on Crossfire 3.) Get a 15,400 RPM hard drive 4.) Get a 30" monitor that supports HDMI 5.) Get liquid nitrogen injection cooling (not really)
(This is for if the price ceiling is somewhere around 4000 dollars.)
dark messenger
Yea go with ATI, at the moment, when you buy an ATI graphics card you get half life 2 with it, lol.

My ati gfx card arrived today, and it came with a letter saying that I can get HL:2 hehe

Hi Billy! I built my own computer about a week ago just for this purpose. I'd just like to give you a rough idea on what you're going to expect (I spent around $1600 with taxes)

$90 Nforce 650i Ultra Mobo
$250 8 GB corsair RAM (DDR2)
$240 Nvidia eGeForce 9600GX (512 MB dedicateD) Graphics card
$60 160GB SATA HD
$210 Intel 2 Quad Core 2.4 GHz processor
$30 CD/DVD Reader/Writer
$20 Floppy Drive
$170 19" LCD display
$90 Case
$20 Wireless Card
$40 CPU Fan
$30 2x12" fans
$100 750W Power supply

Those are the rough prices of the things I bought.
