Hi.
Was able to use Adobe Photoshop 7 just fine, but am now unable to " Initialise" ( german version) due to insufficient RAM.
Is it possible to delete files or remove programmes from start up menu etc to solve this?
I would prefer not to have to buy extra RAM, since my success with external devices is limited !

( latest acquisition being a 40GB LACIE external hard drive. As i do not, as yet, have a CD burner, i got this to do file back ups too large for floppies . However, it will only register as 3.2GB and seems to be incompatible with my HP printer. The latter will not work with my Canon scanner, but i think that's a TWAIN issue. To use any of them, there is a lot of juggling around with deinstalling and restarting etc. )

But back to the RAM..

any suggestions gratefully accepted.
Thanks
M

Hi madinzh,
What operating system are you running? I'll assume its Win98 or XP.
How much RAM do you currently have? - go to 'Start' right click on 'My Computer' click on 'Properties' to open the 'System Properties' window. Here it will say how much RAM is in the computer.

Was the LACIE drive on a parallel port? Did you install the driver software for it? Can you give more information about your computer? e.g. motherboard make & model, processor type etc.

Hi Rimmer
Thank you for a quick reply.
My operating system is Windows 2000 professional .Service pack 3
I only have 521.744 kb RAM ( very sad)
and if my recent Ad-Aware log file is referring to the same thing, that represents the total amount, and i only have 73.860kb available.

If, by " parallel" you mean does my LACIE share the same port with my printer, using the adapter provided, then yes.
Also, the software was installed from the CD .
( did have a bit of bother formatting the hard drive, i.e it wouldn't!!!, but didn't think it would matter)

Re motherboard info etc, where do i look for that?

Madeline

Hi again Rimmer
Managed to find Processor details ....
Intel Pentium 3
X86 Family Model 8 Stepping 6
AT / AT compatible
This what you meant?

Hi Madeline,
QUOTE

My reading of that is you have ~500k of RAM which would be very sad and your computer would not run. Do you mean 521,744kB? That is more like 512MB which is very good.
To be sure go to Start>Run type msinfo32 to open the System Information window (this is winXP but I think it translates to win2000) In the right hand of the windw is a list which includes the Total Physical Memory and Available Physical Memory listed in MB. These are the number I need.

Regarding start-up tasks, have a look in the Task Manager (Ctl+Alt+Del then click Task Manager) Have a look at the Applications that are running is there anything you don't recognise? At the bottom of the window is CPU Usage, the figure changes but on average what is it?

Thanks for the processor info. The motherboard info is often not easy to find unless you have a diagnostic program such as Everest Home. Here is a link:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1?=en

I would suggest you download it and have a look at what is says about your system. The software secton also tells you what applications are auto starting. You can click Report and it will create a text file you can post here.

Sorry if this getting complicated but some of the information not easy to extract remotely.
madinzh
oops, sorry(little known fact that the swiss use full stops to mark the thousands, and commas for decimal points....)
msinfo32 doesn't work for me..file could not be found.
So properties via file menu in My Computer yields 521744KB RAM

Is my Ad-Aware log file info unreliable then, when it states available physical memory as 73860kb?

In task manager, i have 4 Applications running...Bleeping Computer (!) in Netscape, Schmaili, My Computer and another Netscape page.
43 processes running .
I know what some of them are.
CPU Usage ranges from 0-30%
I might have a few uneccessary things but there shouldn't be anything nasty in there since Miekiemoes sorted me out in the highjackthis forum last week, and nothing has jumped in since.

I will have to download lavalys later today.

Thank you for your help thus far.

Madeline

( when you reply next time, could you type your local time please.just for interest.
with me it is now 6.52am )
Rimmer
Its 3.46pm here! You have roughly 512MB RAM which is heaps.

I don't know Ad-Aware log files at all so I don't know what it refers to. sad.gif

Try turning on your task manager and select the 'performance' tab. Then watch it as you load Photoshop. CPU will go to 100% for a while, that's ok but what about memory usage?
madinzh
Downloaded Everest and found this under motherboard
Hope this report means more to you than it does to me!

Does this make sense?

If you want kernel memory i will have to do it again.

I thought ADAwareSE was obligatory nowadays!
Rimmer
Motherboard - I was looking for details because the BIOS on older boards had limits to hard drive size (thinking about the LACIE problem). I should have just asked you for the BIOS report. dry.gif From the info you sent it does not look like it would have any BIOS limitations.

LACIE - just a thought but did you try it with BIOS set to different kinds of parallel port?
There is standard/bi-directional/EPP and others. Does the LACIE manual say it should be set to a type?

Memory - with a browser and schmaili running you only have 94MB available. Seems low - my system has 512MB and 100MB available with browser and graphics app open and with 500kB image being edited. What is schmaili? where did you get it and what happens if you shut it down? What browser are you using?
Run task manager and look at Processes - what's using all the memory? See if Everest will do a report on running processes.

AdAwareSE - I run it all the time but I don't get any logs. huh.gif

Hi
I don't know how to change my BIOS, or how to find it for that matter!
Must check LACIE CD later today
Schmaili is just an emoticon programme that loads at startup, hardly ever use it...
Like Everest...

laugh.gif G'day Madeline,
Thanks for the Everest report - it looks like you're running McAfee and AVG. Pick one and uninstall the other one.
If you hardly use Schmaili uninstall it for now and see what effect it has. You can always put it back if you miss it.
As to the two figures in the Everest report - the first is how much real physical RAM the process is using, the second is how much swap space (virtual RAM on the hard drive) is being used.
What browser do you use? Netscape and IE are both in the processes list.

I'm running out of ideas here. sad.gif You can temporarily disable startup programs with msconfig in WinXP (but I'd have to look up what you do for win2000) and see if Photoshop will load then. If it does not I would suggest uninstalling it and re-installing it.

Sorry I'm not being much help.
Rimmer
The function of msconfig in Win2000 is provided by freeware called Autoruns.
It can be downloaded from here:
http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/autoruns.shtml

I've never used it so I cannot help you run it, but it is recommended by BC.

HI Rimmer

Thank you for persevering.

Anyway, Schmaili has gone.

Was about to hyperspace AVG, since i can easily download this free version again, then wondered about the items in the vault. Do they just get deleted, and is that ok?
(Miekiemoes had also told me to pick one antivirus , i just wasn't sure which one)

My default browser is Netscape 7, but this does not seem to support everything, so i have IE as an option ( don't know how to get rid of it anyway)
Both were there when my Photoshop used to be ok before.

Have to admit, thought all the recently acquired scanning and removal tools might have gobbled up a lot of RAM.

LACIE CD ...connect to a USB 2.0 Host port. Which i think i did. Might deinstall and reinstall tthe software soon., and try the formatting again.
Photoshop still being stubborn, so might do the same with that.

If all else fails, i can go and get " a stick of RAM "....and maybe you can tell me where to put it!!!

Madeline
phawgg
Hi,
I thought I'd try to help as best I can.

QUOTE
I would prefer not to have to buy extra RAM, since my success with external devices is limited !

The RAM would be internal, and 512 is sufficient.
Even though installing another "stick" is not hard,
it doesn't seem appropriate and does involve purchasing the right one(s) if it were needed.

QUOTE
latest acquisition being a 40GB LACIE external hard drive.

This device is also sufficient, yet I think it was installed improperly.

QUOTE
However, it will only register as 3.2GB

This can happen if the "drive partitioning" was not accomplished correctly.
It appears as though the drive was formated to accept the Win2000 OS,
but only a part of it (the partition) is functioning to accept the OS, and the remaining part is not partitioned,
so it will not be seen as an active drive (healthy).
QUOTE
( did have a bit of bother formatting the hard drive, i.e it wouldn't!!!, but didn't think it would matter)

Yes, it will be necessary to redo it's installation.

You may check it's properties in one of the system utilities available.
I, like Rimmer, am not exactly familiar with win2000.
In winXP it could be viewed using the disk manager, however,
I believe the Everest report can also be used
to determine what is going on with it.

Look for relevant information in your Summary Report and post it, please.

QUOTE
As i do not, as yet, have a CD burner, i got this to do file back ups too large for floppies

Understandable, and a good choice.

QUOTE
and seems to be incompatible with my HP printer.
The latter will not work with my Canon scanner,
but i think that's a TWAIN issue.
To use any of them,
there is a lot of juggling around with deinstalling and restarting etc.

Probably not precisely tied into the external hard drive issue, but
still an indication that some configurations are incorrect.

QUOTE

Yes, perform an uninstall using Add/remove programs.
If asked by prompt messages to uninstall all components, reply "yes".
After rebooting, open your C:\ at My Computer using the context menu,
Open the folder "Program Files" and search for Grisoft. (assuming you can view system files on that "primary drive")
The folder may or may not remain.
If it did remain, you may simply delete it.

Using both browsers is actually recommended practice.
Internet Explorer is, as you mention, useful at certain websites, in fact necessary, so uninstallation of IE is not recommended.

I have used Adobe Photoshop6, and it is a large program, capable of consuming both system resources and hard drive space.
I think thats been covered in previous discussion.

Your reports indicate what is going on.
You do have ample RAM, at 512 MB.

The amount available to utilize as you open various programs will decrease.

Total physical memory 521744 CPU 0%
Available 94816
System Cache 251512

then with Photoshop:
Upon running Photoshop CPU 100%
Available 66456
System Cache 238688

then the failure to initialize:

After failure to initialise message CPU 4%
Available 66000
System Cache 238688

and finally back to the original amount.

After closing Photoshop CPU 0%
Available 95440
System Cache 248920

meaning starting Adobe requires about 28.4 MB

What caught my eye was the "original" amount remaining after startup.

Whatever is running is consumming over 400MBs of memory.

That would be, as you correctly determined, in the running processes list.

This list, which I have taken the liberty of rearranging, based on what I think they are:

Anti-virus program one:

avgamsvr.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgamsvr.exe 7356 KB 2708 KB
avgcc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgcc.exe 10744 KB 3704 KB
avgupsvc.exe C:\PROGRA~1\Grisoft\AVGFRE~1\avgupsvc.exe 2732 KB 564 KB

Anti-virus program two:

mcagent.exe C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe 6648 KB 2580 KB
mcshield.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe 15120 KB 7144 KB

mcvsshld.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshld.exe 6260 KB 2528 KB

I don't know how to change my BIOS, or how to find it for that matter!

Viewing the BIOS is a good practice.

The technique varies from one board to another.
Generally tapping "delete" as soon as you power on the PC will cause the boot initialization to pause at a
screen that provides you with the information that is "assembled" by the Basic Input Output System before it
"allows" the win2000 OS to load.

Your Everest report also will define which BIOS you have with your motherboard.
Posting that information will help to determine if the delete key is used,
or perhaps F2, or F12, or another procedure.

Once you are "IN BIOS" you have no mouse, but up & down, Right & Left arows and the enter key
will allow full use, to view, or make adjustments to the BIOS to accomodate new hardware.
Most, if not all, BIOS will also show instructions regarding which keys to use.

I guess you have some "homework" to do.
With more information, we should be able to eventually solve the riddle of:

"NEED MORE RAM?"

As an option to posting the extra information from the Everest Report,
you may email to me the entire report, and I can post the relevant information if you like. PM me (using that button below my post) and I'll provide you with my email address, madinzh

Madeline - please follow phawggs instructions, but also have you done a disk defrag lately?
If not in the last month, run it, it can't hurt anything. (Turning off your anti-virus and screen saver will help it complete more quickly.)

Windows 2000 Defragment:

* Double click My Computer
* Highlight your C: drive by clicking on it once.
* Right click the highlighted drive
* Click properties
* Click the Tools tab and click the Defragment now button.

If you don't know what i'm referring to see the article here:

madinzh
Hi Rimmer
Will apply myself to the homework from phawgg as best i can. unsure.gif
Just to mention, i did defragment my C disk about 3 days ago ( the D disk didn't need it )
Didn't switch off the Antivirus, don't think i have a screensaver, ( unless you mean my desktop screen) and it took absolutely ages!!!

Also ran DiskCleanup, and can free 957KB.

Anyway, sorry for the very basic level of my computer skills and no doubt corresponding problems!
Am ver grateful that BC does take the time to help with the little things that are probably all so obvious to you experts.

Thank you for all your suggestions. icon_thumb.gif

Incidentally, not all of my right click functionality returned after my Active X issue, so i can't always do everything in the way recommended.

Is there anything about your system that does run normally?

(sorry, that's not very helpful dry.gif )

Please let me know the model name and/or number of your LACIE drive.
madinzh
Oh dear,
Only mentioned that cos it stops me doing everything that's recommended.
Could add i can't start in safe mode, and probably can't use the del key during start up to look at my BIOS, haven't tried yet.....since NTLDR are missing..
Am using the F12 key during startup and booting from drive C

This is what prompted me to join BC.
The drives disappeared, then my right clicking and double clicking stopped when i started to get my Active X display warnings. I sent a highjackthis log in , and managed to clean my system up, but didn't get all the right click function back again.
Am living with it.
Will sort out the drives too.

LACIE Mobile Hard Drive USB 2.0

Rimmer
I have downloaded the Lacie manual and see it is a USB drive. Please ignore anything I said regarding parallel ports and the BIOS because it does not apply.
Note also there is no additional software or driver required to run the drive under Win2000.

You said earlier:
QUOTE
If, by " parallel" you mean does my LACIE share the same port with my printer, using the adapter provided, then yes.
Also, the software was installed from the CD .
( did have a bit of bother formatting the hard drive, i.e it wouldn't!!!, but didn't think it would matter)

Given that it's NOT parallel, what do you mean by the "adaptor provided"? Ideally the drive should plug in to a USB port (on its own) and draws its power from that port. So far as I know you cannot share a USB port with 2 devices e.g. a drive and a printer. Lacie talk about a "Power Sharing Cable" which is designed to get extra power from a PS/2 port (e.g. keyboard) if the drive cannot get sufficient power from USB. But you cannot use the drive with the Power Sharing Cable only as there is no data link in that cable.
One way you can have multiple devices on one USB port is by connecting a USB hub. The hub then provides extra USB ports, however not all hubs provide power to the ports. So, if you are not already doing so, I would connect your drive directly to the PC on its own USB cable. Then format the drive as decribed in the manual and let us know if you have full capacity. mellow.gif
madinzh
Hi there
Sorry for not replying yesterday.
Lacie using it's own USB 2.0 port, and power-sharing with the keyboard ( wouldn't share with the mouse)
Reformatted it, and now have 37.3GB. Not the 40 GB specified, but much more than before.
Uninstalled and reinstalled Photoshop, but still no joy.
Will mail a report to phawgg as he requested, and he will post the relevant bit in the forum.

Mad.
Rimmer
Madeline,
That's great you have got your Lacie drive working! At least thing are getting better rather than worse smile.gif
How come you ended up power sharing? Would it not work without the power share cable? Just curious.
37.3GB = 40GB. We live in the age of marketing. What that means is the absolute total capacity of the drive is 40,000Mbytes of information. If you want to use the drive you have to format it, which writes header information in each sector so that the drive can find files when you put them in there. After its finished formatting you only have 37,300Mbytes of storage left. But why sell it as a 37Gb drive when you can sell it, truthfully (sort of), as a 40GB drive?

This sounds fairly serious to me. Can't boot in safe mode !! Btw you dont need NTLDR to go into the BIOS, you dont need any operating system. In the BIOS you are talking direct to the hardware. I dont know the significance of the F12 key.

Hopefully phawgg will shed more light when he looks at the info you sent him. thumbup.gif

Just a quickie, LACIE will work alone, but i need my mouse and keyboard to work too. There are only 2 suitable openings in the back of my computer, so power sharing is my only option (?)
Although, i suppose i could get a wireless mouse...

I found this link which can help to see the basic system:
http://www2.rhi.hi.is/thjonusta/sala/gx150/specs.htm

It appears there were three types of cases, so it might help to
measure the width, depth & height so we know which it is.
I found no published procedure for accessing BIOS on that page, though.

What I did find was this:

http://www2.rhi.hi.is/thjonusta/sala/gx150...blems.htm#diags

It seems that a Resource CD is used for a program called "dell diagnostics" and it
seems the BIOS may be accessed using it, perhaps.

I did get the information you sent, madinzh.

I deleted that which wasn't needed in the post.

The report sent was several "quick reports".
It will be better to send the entire report so the information presented
in "overlapping" sectional details can be cross-referenced.
Since it is a long report, it is likely only 10% will end up posted,
but there are still some undetermined items that may well apply to the problem.
I'd suggest once again, simply choose the complete report to send.
Choose the "report wizard" and "all pages" at the "report" on the toolbar.

BTW, the identification details of OS product key codes are primarily what should not be posted publically. Any private information will be contained in the very first part of the report, computer name & administrator username you may keep
off the public pages, IMO.
When you generate a report, you can simply highlight any type
and delete it before sending and/or posting to be on the safe side.

From the report already sent:

BIOS Properties:
BIOS Type Phoenix
System BIOS Date 07/29/02
Video BIOS Date 03/23/20

Although the report always mentions new updates might be available,
I tend to think the BIOS is OK as is.
I also have one of the same BIOS manufacturer's products on my mainboard.
I can access BIOS by tapping the DELETE KEY continously from the moment I power on the PC, and it will pause in the typical reboot cycle to open the BIOS screen for inspection and/or editing.
I have personally experienced difficulty in accessing the BIOS on a Dell Dimension, though. I need to do more research on it, I think.
I'd read F2 & F12 being used for two reasons,
but I'll check into more for you. (I have since found the two links above)

If someone else reading this knows differently, please comment.
As for why the safe mode is not showing as an OS feature, that does
come as a surprise. I have to say once again, still checking ...

Regarding the posts you have made recently:
You do have your entire drive available to use, now. Good job.

If you are limited to 2 USB ports, I'd check for an adapter to use for the mouse,
in addition to the other possibilities Rimmer mentioned (a Hub).
My understanding is that you may be able to add a PCI card that hase four additional
USB ports, and they would be available at the back of your PC in the location of what are called "expansion slots". If you view the rear, and see areas that are metal
plates in places that appear to be where connections could go, you probably have
some expansion slots un-utilized at this time.

The keyboard & mouse do have special connections available to use.
I for instance, have a USB mouse, and can choose to either use a USB port
(connection like one of the two you have available presently to use) or I can use the one specifically designed for it by plugging a 1" long adapter, with the "male" end
plugged into the PS/2 connection on the PC, and the USB connection on the mouse into the "female" end on that adapter.

Once again, report details (yet to view) will confirm the hardware connections your PC has and those that might be possible to have. That will make it easier to specifically recommend a plan of action.

Slowly, but hopefully surely, we'll progress forward towards resolving the problems.

One last note, on a "opinion" basis. I think the Adobe Photoshop would be best run on your primary drive. It will place some files by default on that drive. Because of it's "size", and the fact that it uses large bitmaps as intermediate layers when you work with images, and they require using both HD space & system resources (and a thing called the page file system) I tend to want it as "close to the OS" as I can get it.

So in the back of my mind, I'm thinking you'll want to get things operational again, and then approach the matter with new understandings, sorta.

External drives do have some limitations in comparison to internal ones.
I need to view details on the LACIE USB drive ...
Sorry the my findings are still shetchy at this point.
Rimmer
I still do not understand how your keyb, mouse and Lacie are connected.
We know the Lacie is primarily USB connected but may have a ps/2 power sharing cable used.
Could you answer the following questions to help me understand:
  • Are both your keyboard and mouse USB (flat rectangular connector 12mmx4mm) or are they PS/2 (round connector ~9mm dia.)?
If both are USB and you are unable to connect them in 2 ports in the rear of the PC then try phawgg's suggestion of a USB to PS/2 convertor for one of them.
  • Do you have two additional USB ports on the front of the PC?
According to the specs phawgg linked to you should have. They may be hidden under a cover or door. If you do you can connect there.
madinzh
Sigh.
In reply to your questions, Rimmer:
1.Mouse and keyboard have PS/2 connectors, and are occupying my only two PS/2 ports.
2.I have now found two additional USB ports (and space for a headphone) at the front of my computer under what i thought was a decorative flap. ( ! )
Thanks Phwagg!
Neither new USB port seems to support the LACIE.....sad.gif
but the printer is ok there....bounce.gif

So after a bit of a shuffle round, all my devices have a port to call their own, and seem very happy about the arrangement.
I am also very happy about not having to mess with my 3 un-utilised expansion slots.

Will send the unexpurgated version of the everest file soon.

Thanks, again
Madeline
Rimmer
That sounds like a big improvement, all peripherals hooked up and working thumbup.gif

Now we just have to sort out your booting issues and your problem running photoshop.
madinzh
I was afraid you were going to say that.
madinzh
Was hoping to rearrange my desktop icons, and move some files into the LACIE,but they will not drag .
L-clicking highlights icon, but when i move the mouse, icon stays where it is and pointer becomes circle with line through it.
Is this connected to my RAM issue,?
They did all move when i clicked Auto arrange, so they're definately not where i want them now!
Rimmer
Hi Madeline,
I don't know why your desktop icons refuse to move elsewhere, but even if they did move that would have nothing to do with relocating files to the Lacie drive. Specific files that you create (such as Word documents or photos), you can move to a new folder on the Lacie. But if you want an application (which would have a desktop icon) to be on the Lacie you have to uninstall it and reinstall it, telling it to reinstall to a folder you choose on your F:(Lacie) drive.

What is the F12 option when you boot? why do you say you don't have NTLDR? Are there specific eror messages?
phawgg
I found over a hundred thousand references to NTLDR on google.

NTLDR online, a lot of advice, and fairly technical but is it appropriate in this case?

Seems it is a popular problem, but not certain at the moment
(without bearing up under the search)
how it might apply here.

I haven't given up, by any means, just haven't put it all together yet,
how to go about making a definate resolution plan.
There seem to be some obstacles ...
when considering the easiest way
to solve the variety of
symptoms, and
what seems
like

a set of circumstances that have compounded upon each other.

Uninstallation & reinstallation of programs, and perhaps
double checking the actual hardware connections of
the components is likely going to be the answer.

Please "hang in there", madinzh.
Another post is coming.

smile.gif
Rimmer
madinzh - while we are waiting for phawgg's post could you tell us the exact sequence of events during booting your PC to Windows 2000?

We are looking at a fix but need to know the complete error message and any choices or keystrokes you make during booting.

Thanks. smile.gif
madinzh
Hi Rimmer
Looks like NTLDR has been found...

For well over a month now, switching on computer generated a "loading "screen with Dell on it , and then an error message:
NTLDR missing
Press any key to continue.
Pressing any key produced only the error message again, and again, and again....
Pressing F2 key should have switched to the start menu but generated only same error message .
Pressing F12 key, whilst Dell was still on screen, switched to the boot menu.
Choosing option, with the down arrow,...boot from Disk C, and enter,...prompted Windows to start up and system ran "normally".

However, in order to check the BIOS, Phwagg suggested pressing DEL during start up .This had the effect of launching Windows instead and the error message no longer appears.

All i have done is to uninstall Photoshop and reformat the Lacie.

Re Icon moving ( or not ) :
Desktop icons just need to be rearranged.
I don't want to want move applications onto the Lacie.
I want to transfer/move/copy 159 files from my D drive onto it.Mainly graphics (2.2MB). Didn't think i had to open each one then save as.

Beginning(?) to feel very incompatible with computers.

You and me both!
What you must remember is that your computer, driven by windows, is simply failing to make itself accessible to intelligent, creative humans, such as yourself. It is to be pitied and given as much attention as you think worthwhile, but otherwise is not worth a moment of your time. smile.gif

May we take it now that you can boot "normally", just turn the PC on, no error messages, no F keys?

Right click on an empty area of the desktop - under "Arrange icons by" do you have 'auto arrange' ticked, if so untick it.

That should not be a problem. Create a folder for them on the Lacie then use windows explorer to access the files on your D: drive. Highlight the files you want to move. In the left pane of explorer find the Lacie drive and click the '+' sign to view its subfolders. Now drag the files from the right pane to the Lacie folder in the left pane. They should all copy to theLacie drive. If you no longer want them on the D: then delete them. (If you wish to move the files rather than create a copy hold the SHIFT key down before dragging.)

Yep

No problem

So far so good

[Now drag the files from the right pane to the Lacie folder in the left pane. They should all copy to theLacie drive]
No chance.
They look like they're attached to the cursor, and you can even place them over the appropriate Folder, but nothing really moves. All the time the cursor is a circle with a line through it, which i saw somewhere means function not available.

I mean i shouldn't complain...when i had the active x display warnings ( NOT due to my IE security settings ) just applications would open with a double click, the only thing to respond to a right click was the desktop itself, and folders like My Computer would open through the file menu...but because nothing was displayed in the window, you couldn't see anything to select.....

I think there must be a connection since it all happened about the same time.

Do you think i am in imminent danger of a complete breakdown? As it were. rip_1.gif
phawgg
I don't think you're in imminent danger of computer failure, madinzh.
The danger exists for the problems ... they are in danger of being solved.

Two things come to mind regarding the desktop icon problem(s).
Both are sorta "I wonder ifs" more than "thats probably its".

The desktop program(s) are tied to username, and
one user's desktop will differ from another's.
One user doesn't have all the functionality when viewing
another's. Unless the user is an administrator.

user groups in win2000 article

The same limitation, or lack of it, can apply to desktop functions
due to username privileges. That is how a PC can dis-allow
a user on a public library's PC from removing a program icon or a file.

This question comes to mind,
"Do you experience the same situation when in safe mode?"
because to open in safe mode you would need to be a administrator with
admin privileges by default to do it, making the issue of assigned privileges a moot point.

QUOTE

Windows 2000 is the precursor to Windows XP,
so the file systems are similar.
I don't have win2000 available to experiment with,
however this is the context
menu for the desktop in winXP:

Is yours the same?
Or is it like (exactly the same) as this?

To be honest with you, I never really fully understood the "active desktop" concept or it's practical execution of functionality ... I went from win98 to winXP personally.

Maybe there exists a change in the context menu presentation
that would give us a clue as to what has changed.

I encountered a problem sorta like yours once.
I loaded a CD I'd made using a different load of the winXP OS,
after I'd wiped a drive clean and re-installed the OS.
Those folders/files wouldn't budge when I wanted to copy them
back to the new drive's OS from the CD.
It was due to an "ownership" of files issue.
I needed to "take ownership" of them before I could work with them.
Why? Because of settings I'd made in each at the time(s), basically.

Another way normal functions can be modified, that I can imagine,
is by the use of "shell extensions" which are attachments to programs.

an article about context menu problems

The article suggests using a small application to view which of the
shell extensions are present on your operating system.
Non-microsoft ones can be disabled one-by-one to see what happens.
It would be something to explore.

Moving right along, from areas I seem to be rather vague about
and am definately failing to come up with any definitive answers in yet ... whistling.gif

... to areas of nearly the same quality of answers in ...

QUOTE
Was able to use Adobe Photoshop 7 just fine, but am now unable to " Initialise" ( german version) due to insufficient RAM.
Is it possible to delete files or remove programmes from start up menu etc to solve this?

Yes, it is possible, and about that thought, the following:

Adobe itself has programs of a rather complex nature, made more so by the fact that they have different uses
yet some "connections". I say this because the Adobe Reader program and the Adobe Photoshop programs
differ quite a bit, but both can leave files and/or folders on the PC when uninstalling them.
The effect is not known exactly to me. So, if you had (or have) both, you might want to completely
uninstall ALL Adobe and start fresh with them, Photoshop first, perhaps.

To do this would require first using the Add/Remove programs to uninstall.
Then, check your C:\Program Files for any Adobe folders/files "left-over.
Delete them, if found.

Then, the matter of registry keys with remaining entry modifications comes into the picture.
While I do not recommend searching through your registry manually to find any that might still exist,
several programs are available that specialize in doing that for you.
While some folks are reluctant to have such programs put into action, it has always seemed to me
as a danged if you do, danged if you don't kind of proposition.

So, to hedge my bets, I tend to favor programs that are good at doing that over those that are marginally successful.
I have used this program (among several others):

Reg Supreme

You can try it free, and the price isn't bad if you find you like it.

Basically, by default, it will find old, obsolete entries, broken shortcuts and things of that nature and repair or delete them.
You can preview all before enacting a fix. The program is relatively user friendly.
The help menus are good, and if you simply try a few of the basic registry cleaning procedures I think
you'll gain confidence in it's effectiveness.

At least install it and let us know what you find, if you are concerned about using it.
It really is safe to use.

Because you can reset defaults for the search/scan/repair the potential for harm to your OS does exist,
but just don't reset what it is finding unless you are aware of the consequences.

It also will show you lists of programs installed, those running at the time of it's scan, and any uninstall programs.
The uninstall programs are present with most, if not all, installed programs so when you do choose to
remove them from your PC, they are thorough in doing it. Those are the applications that Add/Remove programs
automatically uses when you request a removal. It is also an indication of the quality of any program, how well it uninstalls
or whether it comes with an uninstallation program attached in the first place.

I mention all of this because you can use those separate tabs (sub-programs of Reg Supreme) to locate the Adobe program(s) folders/files,
either using them in combination or alone.

I'd install Reg Supreme, look it over, read about it and then put some of what I've typed into action.

As with all system modifications, it's good to reboot a time or two after you'd done them.
It need not be done in safe mode, although that never hurts.

System backups with be made, and pay attention to where they by default are placed and/or the procedure to restore
everything to the way it was, if you like. I often do that just to test out what a (any) program will do.

Then, before you reinstall the Adobe programs (and any others you question at this time) be sure to clean out the recycle bin and old temporary files.

From your start button click on Run, the type cleanmgr and folow the prompts and allow the cleanup of your C:\. Also let us know if the system finds and gives you the option of cleaning the Lacie Drive, also.

Then, start-->Run-->type %temp% which will open your system temporay folder. Everything found there can be deleted. If a prompt tells you you can't delete it, go on to the next one, and just leave any that might be in
use by some other program at the time.

Finally, open Internet Explorer and under the Tools" select on the General Tab, to delete temporary Internet Files, including offline content.

So, at last, you know your PC is cleaned out, all unnecessary programs are removed (if only for the time being), their removal was thorough and the registry is also clean of left-over "pointers" to old files/folders that were once on your hard drive.

Keep in mind the day you did that.
That day will be a "special one" in your System Restore.
When considering that program's use in the larger scheme of things,
a restore date to it would always be a good thing to remember can be done.

As always, post any questions.
(I seem to post a mixture of them in with the "answers", don't I?)

The multi-peripheral & it's software might be exercising some odd variables as it is presently installed.

Five USB devices are shown, four USB ports available, the HP shows two printers not one, and the fax and that confuses me. Might be why

...and seems to be incompatible with my HP printer. The latter will not work with my Canon scanner, but i think that's a TWAIN issue. To use any of them, there is a lot of juggling around with deinstalling and restarting etc.

Nearly had heart failure when i saw the last two mails!!! ohmy.gif

Here goes:
User info, am logged on as administrator anyway, so starting in safe mode should be ok , but haven't tried it yet since my booting issues were resolved.
Nobody else uses my system (?) , and i have not conciously changed any of my desktop settings. Every time i switch on though, i have to restore my active desktop..ie icons always appear on white screen and i have to reselect the background.
Desktop icon arranging info for Windows 2ooo hopefully follows

will check out context menu problems later.

Adobe Reader program and the Adobe Photoshop programs
[So, if you had (or have) both, you might want to completely
uninstall ALL Adobe and start fresh with them, Photoshop first, perhaps.]

I have already uninstalled Photoshop, but still have:
Acrobat Reader 6.0.2 Update
Acrobat Reader 6.0.3 Update
Atmosphere Player for Acrobat and Adobe Reader
Illustrator 10
photoshop Album 2.0 Starter Edition
Reader 6.0.1
SVG Viewer 3
You want me to uninstall all of these?

Reg Supreme
[At least install it and let us know what you find, if you are concerned about using it.]
smile.gif
410 invalid items. 1 of which applies to Adobe ...Reader 5..does not exist . Do i delete this then?
What do i do with the other 409?
The disclaimer that using the registry cleaner might cause me to have to reinstall my operating system made me somewhat hesitant to use this.

Ran cleanmgr. Took an eternity to let me know C was clean already. D and Lacie clean also.
Temporary folders gone, apart from ZLT0754a, still in use.
Temporary internet now gone.

LACIE...Is reformatted and functioning.
Clicking icon on bar at bottom of screen yields Samsung MP0402H USB Device. No mention of Samsung in accompanying literature.

Don't seem to have an option for 32 bit colour mode, but changed it from 16 to 24 bit.
( othwerwise i can choose 256 colours)

hp psc 1100 series .... 1110 All in one. Did have a canon printer before this, but needed to replace printer head. Cheaper to buy new device, and colleague had just got this one....Not good decision. Has never printed well for me and conflicts with my canon flat bed scanner which is presently uninstalled..TWAIN issue i think.
The cute pdf printer is just a programme.

Not sure about the Fax. Have never tried to use it. Think it is also just a programme, do not have a device.

USB ports...At back: 2 , one used by Lacie. Also one larger one for the cable service provider.
At front: 2 , one used by HP 1110 printer.

Will start in safe mode and look more closely at Reg Supreme tomorrow.

Thanks again for your perseverance.

Madeline, I'm sorry I have taken so long to reply.

Good Job of dealing with all the questions, thank you.

The Reg Supreme has likely found those 409 problems,
each of which involves old obsolete entries, broken shortcuts, registry keys pointing to
files no longer there since uninstalls, etc. That number of them is not unusual.
Your registry has well over 100,000 entries, no doubt. I tend to trust that particular program when it comes to effective, but not over-zealous, repairs to the registry.
I think you'd be safe to remove all, since you have not changed the default search parameters to be finding registry entries that are marginally safe to remove and/or repair.

I generally read the entry descriptions by scanning the list as I scroll down it, making sure I am viewing the column to the far right, even if I must resize the other columns to do it. The columns are KEY... ENTRY ...PROBLEMS and you can resize each by click/drag at the edge of each column. Or, it's even easier to highlight a line, and the contents are displayed in the tan area just above the results window.

Using the "aggressive" instead of "normal" scan, I get 69 entries myself after just a week or so since running it last.

I generally experience a slightly faster performance after these "cleanings" of the registry. The nature of the registry being what it is, it should come as no surprise that it is not always in perfect shape, after a while simply using the PC. Thats why I do it,
and it would be much slower to inspect and manually adjust things. I feel safer
using it than hazarding a dull & repetitious job doing it manually, one I'd likely fail at
full success do to that if nothing else.

About the desktop.
You have a lot of shortcut icons.

Each and everyone of them should appear in your start menu.
Considering the number of them, and the fact that some remain after uninstallation,
(the photoshop is still there) leads me to the conclusion that the white background
is the Operating System's way of dealing with the large number of them.
At boot, it will load the desktop, which means all the little details of it.
It may experience difficulty in making all the necessary "connections" due to
prior inconsistencies, so it does what it can. You then add the background that it "forgot".

I tend to keep my icons to a bare minimum.
So I can advise using the start menu for selection of programs to start.
I'd click each of them and drag them to the recycle bin, and OK the decision to do it when/if a message box presents itself asking me if I really want to do it.
Removal of shortcuts does not effect the performance of any program in any way, you simply choose it from the start menu to open it.

Regarding the start menu.
Click and drag any entry in it, and you should see a black bar behind the "ghost image" of the words as you move it up or down the column(s).
The black bar will indicate where the new location of that particular entry will
be when you release the mouse button.
In this manner you may re-organize the start menu to suit your ease of operation.
I'd place all the Microsoft Office programs together, for instance.
Perhaps all anti-spyware programs together. You may also use the context menu to
"pin to start menu", so the item is always there, regardless of any MRU (most recently used) modifications (deletions). I may be wrong about these features being available in win2000, but suggest you experiment a bit.

Since desktop icons and their movement has been a question/problem from the start
of your posts, I thought it should be mentioned. Your individual method of organizing
your PC to suit your needs is entirely up to you, and I don't mean to impose my ideas on you.

About Adobe. All of the programs you now have installed can be uninstalled, and
in doing so, you can be more certain that the installation(s) are done correctly given the present state of the software on your PC. It is kind of "standard operating procedure" when troubleshooting and/or optimizing performance.

Those that install from CDs are one thing.
Those that install from online downloads are another.

Basically, when downloading programs online, I suggest you place them in a folder
for "downloads" so you may have the option of doing re-installs without needing
to re-download them. The Adobe Reader 6.0.3, for instance is the newest, and freshly downoloading it after uninstalling the present one(s) will give you just
the 6.0.3 version, and no v6.0.2. A slight gain in reduction of "clutter" in your Program Files folder (where they install to using the installation wizard).
With that example, you can see thatafter a while, your downloads folder might need to have old outdated installation (executable) files deleted, also. When a new release is made available, and after you are certain the newer version performs better, for instance.

The change from 16-24 bit color is good, and you are right, perhaps 32-bit is unavailable considering the video hardware of your "coppermine" pentium III motherboard.

HP Printer. I have a 1315 just bought, in fact I haven't installed it on Mom's win98
(the reason I bought it, not all multi-periperhals can operate properly without winXP or win2000)

Here again, a standard procedure you've done already is uninstalling the software for it, and re-installing. With the variety of circumstance surround the isue, that isn't bad to do, although it can wear on your patience if the same problems persist.

At least you could capture screenshots of the exact error messages when and if you encounter them.

Same goes for the flat bed CANON. I suspect that a driver issue is at fault, and could be remedied by downloading the right software from the website of the manufacturer. We can help with that also, given the facts involved, best viewed as you see them, displayed on your desktop as an error message.

BTW, the photobucket screenshot was done well in your last post, a picture is worth a thousand words, they say. I realize my long posts of a thousand words can cause alarm, too. smile.gif

So, in closing, I'll look into the HP 1315 (which is remarkably similar to the 1100 series in appearance, at least) and wish you well in your further experiments, and please keep up the good work, and posts will be replied to.

Hi phawgg
Thank you for your post.
I was looking at ShellExView, (mentioned in context menu info you told me to look at) when i noticed it, so have put extension tinkering cool.gif on hold whilst i reply.
Re RegSupreme, clicked fix, 12 issues were repaired(?) and the rest deleted.
Re desktop, screen shot prompted me to wonder about numbers of icons ..so have started right clicking and deleting since can't drag and drop into recycle bin.
Still can't drag and drop within Windows explorer either.
Can drag and drop within start menu.
Have created download folder for future use. will be using it in a minute when i restart and then download Adobe Reader 6.0.3
Back to ShellExView quickly, all icon and drag and drop handler entries created about the time my problems started, seem to be by Microsoft. Do you think update downloads could be a factor?
Moving swiftly on.
Perhaps it's just time to buy a brand new machine and start corrupting that one!
M
Notice there isn't en emoticon for throwing in the towel.

You're learning so much with this one, you will really know what to do with a new one, but why bother with a new version of windows?
win2000 can be so much fun. tongue.gif

yes, possibly

Your progress has been swift, and your learning pace is demonstrated
as appropriate in these matters.

QUOTE

hahaha, well ... with what you are learning, you'd fly with a new PC, but ...
In fact, perhaps a re-format & reloading the win2000 might well be within feasibility to best resolve all problems, but first let's\make sure you can save data to your external drive and continue to tinker with the present installation of the win2000. Towards that end, I post it and perhaps a better answer can be found from someone who is a MVP in this ...

QUOTE
Hi again
Found this on Tek-tips.com, thread about non-moving icons.
Main fix seems to be checking reg keys:

[There are 3 reg keys relevant to this problems. Do a regedit and make sure that you have all 3, somehow the update deleted one of them on my computer.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\\Interface\{0000010E-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}\NumMethods

I am missing the middle one, for ProxyStubClsid

Should i create such a key??? and obviously, how on earth do i do it??
Grinler
Can you copy a folder or file from somewhere on your computer onto your desktop ? Let me know if thats works. Dont drag it into lacie...i just want to see if you can copy the files directly onto the desktop.
madinzh
Thank you for your attention to this, Grinler
In windows explorer, right pane,
can select a file and " send to" Desktop with the file menu ( thus creating a short cut, but not really moving it perhaps)
strangely, can not " send to" My Documents, since " the target can not handle this type of document" regardless of type of file i try to send.
"Copy to folder", and "Move to folder" prompt no further options.
Can also select , then copy and paste into an open word document

Once file is opened, can "save as" and then "save in" Desktop.
Can still select , then copy and paste into an open Word document

Hope this is what you meant.
Madinzh
I couldn't drag into Lacie , even if i wanted to.
Dragging and dropping in Windows explorer looks like it's working .. icons selected and pale version moves with cursor ( circle with bar through it) but won't detach and stay.
D&D on desktop , only selects icon, cursor ( circle with bar) moves alone .
D&D only works for me in Start menu.
Grinler
So you are saying you can take a file for example in the c:\ folder and then drag and drop it to the desktop, and it works? You can copy, drag, and drop, etc through the rest of your computer?

If that is the case, something tells me that your usb drive is mounted in read only mode for some reason which is stopping you from being able to copy files to it. What is the drive letter of the external drive?
madinzh
No.
The only dragging and dropping i can do is within the start menu, ie i can move Spybot for instance, and put it under Microsoft Office. Will not go out onto the desktop.

When i go into My Computer, and then C:\drive, i can select a file, but it goes nowhere.
Only the bar and circle cursor will move. Can not rearrange within the window, or drag onto desktop.

Same in Windows Explorer.

When i try to drag a selected file onto the desktop, only the cursor moves as a circle with a bar through it.
If i try to drag the selected file into the left pane of explorer, a faint icon appears which can be moved up and down the directory, but then disappears when i release the mouse button.

I haven't tried to copy any files into the external hard drive yet.It is installed and formatted but has only been used to do a system backup, via Accessories and system tools.
The drive letter is F.
phawgg
Backing up for a moment, to the ShellExView used to view shell extensions.
I chose the self-installer download and it was quickly installed to the programs files folder. Opened it from the start menu. About one second later I see all of them on the PC, non-microsoft ones highlighted in pink.
13 of those and 193 microsoft ones make up the total.

I don't pretend to know what each is doing, but they do seem to apply to context menu options involving everything I'd do within all the programs.
So, I checked to see if they were all enabled. They were, are yours?

It would seem all other Shell Extensions used are authored by Microsoft, including those used by the
multi-peripheral for printing, scanning, fax functions.

While it doesn't appear to indicate, using this little application, if they all are functioning properly if enabled,
it is something to consider. Within the dozen other columns of data per item, some information
can be derived from further inspection, perhaps.

the third button from the left, second row at the top will save a log file to notepad of your results, madinzh
I'd be interested in seeing it, I could at least compare it to the winXP log I have, perhaps get a clue or two ...

You are still experiencing unusual problems, those involving the USB hard drive, your Canon scanner, the HP multi-peripheral,
the context menu functions and the file/folder handling characteristics normally available in win2000.

If I were having the same difficulties, I'd reload the operating system after saving my data, frankly.
Start fresh. I think your PC is fully capable of satisfactory performance from a hardware standpoint.
I'd add an inexpensive CD-RW, but nothing else ... perhaps upgrade to winXP, and expect good results
using the Photoshop and every other program you have, personally.

I'd explore a few more options, first, though.
I'd want my files safe.

We'll continue to help.
Count on it.

From your report, I've pulled all the non-microsoft shell extensions.
Those that are widely used and generally found to present no problems,
I've compressed.
The others remain as somes to consider.

The Kodak is probably not exercising conflicts.
The Real Player might, possibly.
There have been some problems associated with it,
although not of the kind you are experiencing that I'm aware of.

Which leaves the Power Archiver & OmniPage Pro.

http://www.scansoft.com/omnipage/
appears to be an OCR program, with relatively powerful capabilities.

http://www.powerarchiver.com/ claims to "seamlessly interface with windows" which to my understanding puts it right up there with some of the expectations (not always met) assigned other software that has been known to hiccup from time to time.

I'm uncertain if any of these are a "culprit".
I thought it worth a check.

Still thinking about why you've lost normal desktop & Windows Explorer functions ...
and the other problems ...

The Power Archiver is an add-on Drag and Drop & Drop Handler of sorts.
There are others, like Win-Zip
or what I use, IZArc Archiver (free) that could take it's place.

http://www.izsoft.dir.bg/

http://www.winzip.com/

It probably wouldn't hurt to look into the others and uninstall Power Archiver
as a trouble-shooting step. mellow.gif

Good news about the Power archiver, never liked it anyway!
Will remove later today.
Noticed bunch of entries created on 18th feb and 14th April 2005, when my troubles started to compound themselves..any connection?
phawgg
yes, more than likely.

Can you provide some details?

You might consider using safe mode to uninstall.
Recall how the deletions were done when you originally fixed your PC using HJT,
using windows explorer and/or the search feature to locate any files and folders
that might be leftover After a "standard" removal using Add & Remove programs.

Thats a good techique to follow when doing any uninstallation, especially those
involving programs that might have had "unanticipated" effects while installed.
Its hard so say how any particular malware may have effected programs sometimes.

Also, you might be aware of the fact additional entries may be identified by the Reg Supreme after the uninstallation, and they could be safely deleted as well.

A few reboots to square things away, and then perhaps a difference in performance might be noted.

We hope.

Power Archiver gone. ( apart from PASHLEXT.DLL.....Access is denied. The source file may be in use...although i don't see why)
IZArc 3.5 Beta version......what is a Beta version?
Think i've managed to avoid these up to now. Is that designed for a particular type of operating system or undergoing evaluation?
