Hey guys,

For the past few months, my internet speed has been painfully slow. Up until recently, its been fine and accessing pages instantly. Sometimes it can take up to 5 minutes to load a page at the moment.

My girlfriend is connected to the same same router wirelessly and she has no problems with a connection at all.

I have a 20MB Broadband connection - I dont know if that makes a difference though.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you scanned for malware on your system?
Does the ststus bar at the bottom say looking up X or connecting to X?
Have you made any changes to your network settings?

Yeah, I scanned for malware, there were a couple of medium threats but I deleted them.

The status bar never said either of those. It just had waiting for X.

No changes to the network settings.




Thanks but its not actually the start up that is the problem. It loads up instantly, its actually surfing that is the problem.

What Firefox version are you using? Try re-installing firefox and then report back if it works

Firefox is now on version 3 http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/firefox/ just came out today. Try using this version.

This may be a stupid question but if I install the newest version of Firefox, will I lose all my bookmarks from the previous version?

I just installed FF3 and it is FAST!
If you decide to install this, BACKUP your bookmarks first. I had 4 (yes, FOUR) copies of everything in my bookmarks after installing. I just deleted the lot and imported the backup and all good now.
Some (most) of my add-ons are not compatible yet though.

How do I back up my bookmarks?

Here is the way to backup all your bookmarks

Click on the Bookmarks drop down menu and press Organize Bookmarks... then press File and Export. Save the file in a place where you won't loose it

To import bookmarks that have been saved:

Click on the Bookmarks drop down menu and press Organize Bookmarks... then press File and Import then a window will appear asking you if you want to import it from IE or from a file, choose file and locate and open the file that was saved - your bookmarks will now be in a folder in the Bookmarks dropdown menu

It is not necessary to save your bookmarks before installing the new version. Bookmarks and other personal preferences are installed in a folder separate from the browser itself. You may uninstall the older version of Firefox using the Windows add or remove programs utility, and the bookmarks, will not be deleted. They will appear in their usual place when you install 3.0.
That being said, it is a good idea to periodically make a back of your bookmarks as part of a user disaster recovery programme.
