Thanks for telling us that Alan,
Sounds interesting. I'll take a look at test it out and see how it works smile.gif

Please note that this program is a pre-release beta version of a product and not completely tested to ensure its stability or reliability.

What is beta software?
QUOTE
After an initial round of in-house testing, software publishers often release new programs to be tested by the public. These pre-release versions are called beta software, usually denoted by a "b" in the version number, e.g., Netscape Navigator 2.0b5. Since the publisher couldn't possibly test the software under all possible conditions, it is reasonable to expect that wider use of the software may uncover problems that were not discovered during in-house testing. The publisher expects to be notified when users find such problems so that the program can be fixed before its official release.

In general, you should expect to run into bugs whenever using any piece of beta software. These bugs may range in severity from minor features that don't work to problems that cause your computer to crash. You should decide whether the benefit of new features in a beta program outweighs the risk of program instability before choosing to use a piece of beta software. You should also be aware that UITS will not have thoroughly tested beta software, nor will the software be guaranteed by its maker, so you should not expect the same level of support as you would receive for an official release version of the program.

The goal of a beta program is to collect information regarding the performance, quality, stability, and functionality of new products in order to iron out the bugs before they are released to the general public. If you choose to use a beta program, you use it at your own risk.

Generally speaking...

A good Anti-Spyware program would pick these up wouldn't they?

No single product is 100% foolproof and can detect and remove all threats at any given time. The security community is in a constant state of change as new infections appear. Each vendor has its own definition of what constitutes malware and scanning your computer using different criteria will yield different results. The fact that each program has its own definition files means that some malware may be picked up by one that could be missed by another. Thus, a multi-layered defense using several anti-spyware products (including an effective firewall) to supplement your anti-virus combined with common sense and safe surfing habits provides the most complete protection.

I knew that quietman smile.gif

What I meant was... do we need to have this tool? Or would an Anti-Spyware program cover it?
quietman7
I don't recommend beta programs for the reasons Animal noted in Post #3 so at this point I would not consider it a "need to have" tool.
david28
Ok thanks for clearing that up smile.gif

You're welcome.

This is hypothetically interesting to keep an eye on. Because based on the info on the site, they are using behaviour analysis (as opposed to scanning specific files) to identify 'botnet-like' activity coming from your computer. Assuming they monitor more than just port activity, this could be useful when they work the kinks out. We'll have to wait and see how it does.

And I have to agree about the need for using beta software... No one absolutely needs to use a program that isn't even deemed ready for public release by the developper.

Bookmarked. Thanks for link.

No problem, glad to share. I thought it was something to watch.

Also I found this tool http://www.sanasecurity.com/products/as/features.php quite a while ago and it looked good.
