Set a Guinness World Record
Enjoy a Better Web
Sounds like a good deal, right? All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours - it’s that easy. We're not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome.
By the way, the official date for the launch of Firefox 3 will be posted here soon - so check back! Join our community and this effort by pledging today.
I pledge to get Firefox 3 during Download Day to set the Guinness World Record for Most Software Downloaded in 24 Hours.

Sounds like an interesting idea! Hopefully, many people will discover Firefox in the process!
Like John, I would download it anyway, but perhaps I should do it on 'The Download Day' to add to the record.
I guess you need to subscribe (at the site) in order to be informed of the planned date...

I think many Firefox users are just counting the days to the public release of 3.0.
We will all keep an eye out for the release date and swamp Mozilla's servers!

http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/faqDo we have to reach a specific number of downloads in order to set the record?
This is the first record attempt of its kind so there is no set number. We'd really like to outdo the number of Firefox 2 downloads on its launch day, which was 1.6 million. Let's shoot for 5 million--the sky is the limit!
Download Day is our attempt to set a world record for the most software downloads in
24 hours and will occur on Firefox 3 launch day.

Ohh cool!! I think I'd like to pledge too.. although Im terrible at dates I'll proably forget about it if not reminded

I guess I'll sign up for it.. was going to get it anyways ;)
Which reminds me... I really really hope they specified the exact date in every country as June 17th over here wouldn't be the same in Europe or Asia... so how are they going to deal with that??? Because then it would be on multiple days unless they start counting 24 hours from a certain time and then forth till 24 hours but it wouldnt be fair for the rest of the countries where people are still sleeping when record thingy began??
Im confuzzled!!! @.@

I'll set myself a reminder, but I can't begin to imagine how many servers/bandwidth would be required for the attempt.
Mariana_X I never thought of that.

Since the map of people signing up (and I think those who do will get a E-mail reminder) is world-wide, I am sure that the "day" is 24 hours.

I have to wait until tomorrow

Firefox 3 will be worth the download too - I did BETA test it in the very early stages as soon as it was actually ready for BETA testing but they probably added some more features by now

we got more than
8 million Firefox 3 downloads in 24 hours. That’s more Firefox downloads than we’ve ever had in a single day -- an impressive feat indeed!

8,000,000 Downloads in 24 Hours???!
Very Impressive!
Just over 1,000,000 Downloads came from Germany alone!
Japan downloaded 650,000 times!
Both of them outperformed us in the UK with only 440,000 downloads.
Unsurprisingly, the US downloaded 3,500,000 times!
Other major performers (Current approx. figures):
Spain: 410,000
France: 400,000
Italy: 340,000
Canada: 320,000
Poland: 285,000
Iran: 270,000
China: 250,000
Brazil: 250,000

They beat the record...right?
Billy O'Neal
Jun 20 2008, 01:37 AM
Well, since to my understanding, noone has ever tried to set a record like this before, I think the record doesn't officially exist. However, I think they did set a record which will not be broken in a long time.
I think M$'s Automatic Updates service could beat this on any Patch Tuesday, but that's usually automated.

No record ever existed before, so it's not like you can beat it

I wouldn't think 8+million people would even be aware of Patch Tuesdays and be rushing to download something from Microsoft as soon as it's out. I'm getting the impression off the Internet most people usually wait to see if the patches will cause any issues and if there was a fixed patch before downloading, but that's just me.
And strange, Billy. I'm using Mozilla 3.0, yet your signature (javascript?) says 2.0.0.14. If I look at the About Mozilla Firefox section in my browser, it says 3.0 in the logo and 2.0.0.14 under that. Hmmm.... useragents, then?

In order to get the record the server logs will need to be checked. I wonder if they are allowed duplicate downloads.

Yes, I always even delete the user profiles to do a clean install.

I guess they had plenty of data allowance

I think there would be some sort of system to avoid this though - Only counting once for each IP etc.
skyfuser
Jun 20 2008, 08:40 PM
Mozilla did say that they record the IP.
But then again, the smart fanboys would've known how to change their IPs, either by a program or dynamic IPs....

Looks like downloads slowed down now, since it was 1500 around midnight yesterday.

The final record breaking 8,002,530 downloads for web browser Firefox 3.0 took place in June.........
Gareth Deaves of Guinness World Records called it "an extremely impressive accomplishment"........
The company said while IE reached a record low last month, it predicted Firefox would break the 20% share bar sometime this month..............
Mr Kim said Mozilla would continue to support Firefox 2.0 until the middle of December.
After that users will be expected to switch over to Firefox 3.0, which since its launch over two weeks ago boasts 28 million downloads and counting. ..............
