I know this is an old question but my searching has found nothing. I have a Vista/Ubuntu dual boot with a separate /home folder but my partitions are rather out of whack space wise so I sized down the windows and Ubuntu partitions which left me with a big chunk of space that I want to merge with my home partition but I cant figure out how there is no option to merge partitions (I use Gparted of the LiveCD) and it wont let me extend my home partition onto the blank space formated of otherwise so does anyone have any ideas? My partitions are as follows:

/dev/sda1 - Windows
/dev/sda3 - Home partition
/dev/sda5 - Ubuntu System
/dev/sda6 - Free Space
/dev/sda7 - Swap

This is a limitation of GParted, it won't 'merge' partitions.
It will extend a partition if the free space is next to the formatted space.
The next best solution is to format the new space as ext3 and name it
something simple:
/storage
/junk
/oldfiles
Any name will do.
Reboot and Linux should see it and let you start using it. Then move
all the stuff you aren't using there.

You can also format it FAT32 so Linux and Windows can use it.

What about with a different partition editor ?

If the newly freed space is not part of any partition AND it is adjacent to the /home partiton, you can simply expand the /home partition into the free space. If it's not adjacent then what could be done is to move one or more partitions (which gparted can do, it just may take a while) do that the free space is next to the /home partition.

However, were I in your shoes I would probably do what raw suggested.
