I have a Dell Dimension 2400 and have recently removed the 256 MB memory board and replaced it with a 1 GB in 1 memory board slot. In the specifications section of the manual it says that the Maximum memory is 1 GB. What would be the consequences if I placed the 256 mb board into the second slot making a combined total of 1256 mb?

Thanks for your help.

According to Crucial - h e r e.

Your system can handle a max of 2G RAM.

It appears you do not have to install matching pairs i.e. two 512 M or two 1 G sticks.

You should be OK, based on Crucial's information, although matching pairs of RAM would be the most efficient.

Oh, don't be surprised if an Admin/Mod moves this post to a more appropriate area of the forum - JW

That computer doesn't support dual channel, so you can mix densities of modules. They don't need to be matched pairs.

btw...this is the correct forum.
