As I am moving to a place wher brownouts can be expected, will a laptop continue to work if one happens? At least for the battery time.

Someone told me it won't as it needs a modem for the ADSL, but people use laptops in hotspots all the time so is not my own residence one if I have internet connection?
Thank you
John

When it is running on the battrey the it will run foor the Duration of the batteries charge. It may take longer to recharge during this period.

One needs local power for the modem to run ADSL, otherwise you will not have internet connection on ADSL.
But your laptop will operate through the battery system for ???
A spare, charged battery is a good idea to have on hand.

In USA phone line power is separate from electric service and often phone service continues even when the main power is down.
So I keep a dialup service to use when my DSL goes down. (I don't know how your systems operate in Oman....)

Thank you both. Yes, I think it is separate here, but I am moving to the Philippines (hehehe) in two months and I am not sure what happens there but I can find out easily enough. In other words though a laptop is not the answer to brownouts that I though it might be as a normal PC will do the same job. (I don't actually like laptops much).

Thanks for your answers. Much appreciated.

NO. A standard PC without a battery system backup will not operate in a brown-out - loss of electric service.
A laptop with its included battery will give you a few hours. More with a spare battery.

Moving to the Philippines? You might want to invest in a generator for emergency backup power? I have no idea of the power stability there.

Just a thought but perhaps a small generator may be a smart buy. A little 5Hp honda could run both your fridge and computer along with a string of lights for those "brownout" moments. Not sure if that is budget-ly sound for you though

Thank you again. How stupid of me to think the comp will run on a 'wing and a prayer' I think the saying is! All clear in my mind now.

Strangely though I have spent quite some time over there recently and there have been no brown outs as yet I thiunk two hours would be enough for me to sort out what I am doing so it is not the end of the world and no need for generator except maybe for lighting.

All the best and thanks once more.
