we are having trouble streaming video online. It only buffers for a minute or two and then freezes. For example the movies on you tube will only buffer for approximately half of the video and then freezes. Please help. We installed the flash player 9 and the shockwave player. we don't know what else to do.

It could also be a server problem with the website, if there's too much traffic it takes forever to buffer

I am not intentionaly running anything in the background. Im not to knowledgeable with computers.

Hmmm, why don't you try starting the video, pausing it for a few minutes, then playing it again? By then you shouldn't have a problem with the buffer.

The point is it's likely that there's something going on that's causing this that has nothing to do with streaming video. So you need to provide more details. Maybe you don't have enough memory. Maybe you have stuff running in the background that can be turned off. Post a link of what you're trying to watch. Maybe there's something wrong with the website. Doesn't seem likely though.

I have 47 out of 65 gbs of free space. I ran a program that tells you all the things that autorun on your comp. but the list is big and i dont know what is what on there.
and as far as a link it doesnt matter what site or video i am trying to watch they all do the same thing.

Yep that's a lot of... startup entries. With that many (let's see I see QuickTime, a P2P client...)
And there are some entries I think are malware. PrevX database shows a few of the .sys files in the drivers folder of system32 as malware. Hmmm. Might be false alarm.
Why don't you download StartupLite and see what it comes up with. Remember to only DISABLE or NOTHING to the entries. If you delete, you literally permanently delete it. Then try seeing if your videos work.

Alright did the startuplite and the result is the same. As far as Malware I was just helped with that and now my scans come up clean. any other ideas?

yeah i tried that but it just goes part way then stops doing anything.
I think i failed to mention that this happens alot when trying to download files as well. They will start then just remain at idle until they time out. I have to cancel start again sometimes over and over. Also just opening web pages this will happen i will click on a site and it will act like it is going to load but just sits there i hit stop and refresh and it pops up.
this is pretty frustrating and i cant for the life of me find the strt up disk to just wipe out and start over.

I don't see anything bad, and the startup seems pretty light. So let's think of something else.
It could be AVG.... their new 8.0 is out and I'm seeing problems. I also tried the free version, didn't like it, it was too slow. Maybe its web security is lagging your internet connection?

I just downloaded the avg8 last week the problem already existed before that. But i can try remving and see what happens. However will this leave me vulnerable? No virus prtection.

No not vulnerable. Just don't go on porn sites and you'll be fine.

just for giggles i ran the test at the top of that speed test page it came with 800 something "infected" files. Do you know anything about that program? it is called PC Registry Cleaner

that was a mistake now i cant get the pc registry cleaner to uninstall. why do i do these things....

Ok, your speed is more than enough. Mine plays perfectly and my tests show that which is a bit slower than yours. So there's definitely wrong.
As for PC Registry Cleaner, I couldn't find where it anywhere on speedtest.net? o.O?? And if PC Registry Cleaner found 800 "infected" files... errrr. Don't delete them. Those are registry keys. And deleting them isn't recommended.
I'm not even sure it's safe or not.
Hmmm. So it's not the internet connection....

If you're still having trouble downloading things, try Free Download Manager and see if things get better. If it doesn't back to square one.

Alright download manager didnt help. I am so frustrated. I am going to have to get someone else over here and see if they have the same problems using my connection. At least that will tell me if my comp is bad or connection is a t fault.
Thanks for trying to help though skyfuser. I dont know if it is worth paying to have someone look at this thing it is a couple years old now and for what they charge hourly i can buy a refurbished machine on ebay.

Finally figured out the problem. Should have been one of the first things I checked but didnt for some reason. My brand new Belkin wireless router was a pice of junk apparently. I replaced it with a Linksys model and now I am up and running perfectly again. Thanks
