For 31 days, HP and BuzzCorps are sponsoring an enormous contest where 31 sites will give away a HP HDX Dragon Entertainment Notebook. Each notebook has a retail value of $4,500 and if you add all of the software, games, and movies it gets bumped up to $5,196 if purchased retail. If you multiply that by all the sites involved, this creates a staggering value of prizes for this giveaway. $161,076 to be exact! It is with great pleasure that we announce that Bleeping Computer has been selected as one of the sites to be hosting a contest for one of these notebooks.
On
May 26th, 2008 the Bleeping Computer contest will go live and registered members of the site can enter the contest to win one of these beauties. We will announce the winner on June 2nd, 2008. As of now, the detailson how the contest will work is still being decided, but we will update this topic with more news as we go along. If you are interested in participating in this contest, I suggest you subscribe to this topic. We have also created a page, linked below, with more detailed information as to the specifications of the notebook and the various goodies that come along with it. This page will be updated on the details of our contest in the near future. The list of sites involved in the 31 Days of the Dragon giveaway are listed below:

This is going to be a great contest, with 31 chances to win one of these notebooks. If you have any questions or comments feel free to post them and I will answer them as best as I can. I also want to send a big thanks to HP and BuzzCorps for including Bleeping Computer in the contest.
We also suggest you visit each site above and become familiar with how their contest will be run as each site will be running the contest differently. These are all great sites and worth visiting even without the contest and I encourage you to do so.
Good luck!

Are people from all countries 'allowed' to join in?
By allowed I mean, will they get the prize no matter where they live?
p.s. on this link ->

Awesome! I just can't believe how cool this is!!! I'm at a loss for words :D
Can't believe BleepingComputer was chosen :D
Hmmm... do we hafta be a certain age or something? Do we have to do anything in the contest? Any way to prepare?
Must come back here later I'm too excited ^_^;;

Question: I see that it says "evaluation copy" for several software programs. Does this mean that those programs are trial copies and that a license must later be purchased, or is it similar to the "evaluation" copies of books that professors receive gratis?

The laptop is officially a review unit that we will be reviewing. That is why all the software is evaluation copies. They are though, full versions of everything without any time expiration!
As for the contest, there is no age limitation and as to how the contest is going to be run, that is still to be decided.

Just curious -
who will be doing the review?
I've read many of the reviews here on BC and they've been excellent.

Am especially curious how hot it runs, although there are a lot of other aspects that should be interesting, too.

This is a great contest for especially a student like me who cannot afford to buy a laptop.
It has all the coolest features especially ram and graphics card.
I strongly need the laptop.
Hello Admin , please gift the laptop to me , I dont want anything just the laptop and software to use it and some drivers .
I wish I will win this laptop.

Sounds way cool. Hmm. I see that it comes installed with wireless internet connection stuff. Wonder if it could be rigged up with the appropriate modem for dial-up, DSL or other internet connection.
Note: the Arstechnica link produces an error message. I have been unable to find the correct link.

Will this review happen to be available before the contest starts?
Also, it would be wise for someone like myself to get parental permission before entering right?
If I won this I would got beserk! I so want/need a laptop with Office especially so that I can use it for homework and to study up on computers aswell as do the many things I regularly do. 4Gb RAM - Holy Cow *Mouth literally falls to ground*

. It would be nice to have something like this as I don't just want it - I kind of need it

Anyway, Grinler is there any word of what we need to do for the contest - entering etc. ?
Also, I myself must thank HP and BuzzCorps for giving members like myself and others the chance to win things like this

David
(I did read right that each site has only one to give away and not each site has 31 to give away each day?)

After reading the absolutevista dot com and read their rules
Pretty simple.
Can we all join in on each sites contest
Can we enter more than once?

May 2 2008, 10:18 PM
There's one being given away from each site. Which is 31 in TOTAL. It'd be awesome if it were each though.

The specs on this rig are so far-fetched - 4Gb RAM, 500GB Hard Drive (x250Gb One for movies, pictures and music one for general) 2.88Ghz Dual Processor and 512Mb graphics!
I would scream if I got it! That thing is awsum! I would sleep with it

There there skyfuser calm down don't worry...I am sure they will let you

Grinler, if we won the laptop on another site would we still be able to enter a second time on others?
Grinler
May 3 2008, 09:06 AM
They are all independent contests. So as far as I know, you can enter on multiple sites. That may change, but at this point you can join each contest.
As for parental permission, we will see as we go. Still in the planning stages and have some time before we go live here. As for the rules at the other sites with age requirements, you should read the rules at the various sites. We are all doing the contest differently.

While no computer is perfect, this is quite a powerful "Notebook" - it's more of an "attache case".
To carry around a 20" screen, regardless of the weight, is sweet, that's for sure.
I am a bit disappointed that it doesn't handle Blu-Ray DVD's, though. I mean, to the victor goes the spoils, and Blu-Ray certainly won the war.
CMC024
May 3 2008, 05:22 PM
Wait, what?
I thought it does handle Blu-ray Discs.
From the contest site on bleepingcomputers.com:
Primary CD/DVD Drive: Blu-Ray ROM with SuperMulti DVD+/-R/RW Double Layer
Unless you meant something else, John?
JohnWho

I hope you are right.
I got the info from the
HP Dragon HDX Data Sheet.
It says, way down on the bottom in the "fine print" -

(s2) Blu-ray Discs cannot be played on this Notebook PC.
Maybe there's a slight Model difference and this one includes a Blu-ray capable DVD ROM drive?

Obviously you've never had the "joy" of using a an IBM "Toughbook" (lol) a 14" screen in a case the size of an actual attache case (litterally some are made out of pistol attache safes) and weighing in from 5-15 lbs. Gives new meaning to cumbersome.
I'm game, I need a new lappy.

That's good to hear.
The spec sheet I found and linked to clearly said it does not.
I guess they changed out to a Blu-ray drive sometime after the specs were printed.

huh, this is quite interesting. I suppose everyone's drooling over the thing now. :
Is there something we'll have to fill out, or is it going to be out of all the site's members?
Also, should you make like a 50 post minimum? I think that would be good, and possibly keep down the influx of 1 post members trying for the labtop.
